I assume you mean the Heroes game and not the first M&M RPG.

It's a little awkward when compared with newer TBS games and its own sequels. Once you play them, it's a little hard to go back. I still really enjoy the game, but it's definitely a more simplified experience. Then again, that may appeal to some people. At $10, it's a bit of a tough sell. At $2.50, there's not much of a risk.

Ah, well, wrong sale then... Regardless, I would recommend starting the M&M RPGs with M&M3. 1 & 2 are exceptionally old school. Unless you grew up playing RPGs like that, it's very difficult to go back and appreciate. Starting with M&M 3 though, things improve greatly. 3 - 5 are all of a similar style of art and gameplay and still hold up strongly to this day.

My experience with M&M was kind of hard to define. During the entire play through, it never even occurred to me that I might stop playing, but I'm not sure I enjoyed it, exactly. What it did was create a constant sense of accomplishment--every new area mapped (everything mapped by hand, of course; so much graphing paper...) or quest item found or level attained was a victory, and something like that was always happening, so that I constantly felt that I was being rewarded for my perseverance in the face of all the obnoxious design-decisions and poorly-balanced difficulty the game featured.

But this is a game where if you're supposed to get an essential quest item, and you don't have any inventory space, the item disappears and ha ha, fuck you. It is a game with no in-game way to compare various pieces of equipment. It is a game that provides you with basically no guidance where to go, and theoretically let's you go anywhere, so that the first indication that you're where you shouldn't be is often when your entire party is wiped out--and since you can only save at towns, that can mean hours of work down the drain. It is a hundred hours of wandering around with no idea what the game's central story is, or how you're supposed to advance it.

Only you can decide if any of that sounds appealing to you.

I guess my interest is piqued on Incredipede, but I have the others I want in that bundle on other sites. Is anyone with that bundle willing to trade that game for one of the Heroes of Might & Magic games that work out to the same price? I have the whole bundle for that already.

That just about sums it up.

I might also add that objects on the map generally don't have any sort of visual indicator... town exits, fountains, statues. No graphics and you must face the correct direction on the tile to activate the object description. Generally you don't see anything but walls and creatures when attacked.

I was having the same dream a year ago, I haven't finished HoMM V, but I bought it on GOG hoping that one day Ubisoft will decide to sell their game here without that bloody intrusive DRM (and Steam version is not good for me either - I can't access my Steam Library due to issues with my IP or anti-vir software or firewall or port triggering or who know what...). But then I played the demo and the game was not challenging at all and those silly Russian names of Heroes and silly plot and I decided to play other games like the recent Expeditions: Conquistador or King's Bounty series (the last one KB: Warriors of the North was a bad experience due to being Steam only edition and after the patches being released you had to start to play the game from the beginning - so I spent 277 hours playing it and not finishing the gameeven once..
So to sum up my rambling - whatever is on GoG at whatever price is still a great deal!

Thanks for the tips. I'll probably end up doing it anyway. There's some program that's supposed to build old RPG maps for you, so that should save some time. I guess I'll be playing with a walkthrough closeby for crutches.
