I just got into this whole PC digital download gaming thing. I've bought a few GOG/Steam/Humble games during their fall/winter sales. Probably pretty good for a bit, but don't want to run out of games during a sale drought. The Steam sale is still going and I might get a few more.

So the question is when will the next big round of sales happen or will good sales be pretty constant in the next few months? Do I pick up more games now or be patient and wait? Thx
GOG tends to do a nice sell just about every weekend - the current Square/Enix sale for example.

They also have big "insomnia" sales a few times a year, usually one for every season.

Spring sale in April or May, as far as GOG is concerned
there will pretty much always be decent sales a few times a month somewhere. That's how people get backlogs of 600 games

Just wait, because before you know it, you will have more games than you can play in your whole life.

There are always weekly sales, and on Steam there are lots of discounted games all the time. There are also a lot of bundles, from Humble Bundle, Indie Gala, Indie Royale, Bundle Stars and more.

So I'd say it's up to you. If you're really into the buying part, following sales closely, especially if you have a wide range of gaming interests, then do that and you should find it pretty easy to get a large gaming library for cheap any time you want.

If you're really more into gaming than into buying, or your tastes are more limited, then I'd suggest sticking to the big sales and just using rules of thumb like "don't buy anything that's not at least 60% off or over $10".

By the way if you want to buy now I'd suggest you also look at Green Man Gaming. They sell Steam keys and tend to have similar sale prices to Steam but with an addition of a 20% off (or so) coupon, which makes for even better prices.

Nice, well thought out post. I do have a wide range of interest, so I can probably wait to pick and choose. Ill check out Green Man too. Thanks +1
I check out this site a lot ( mainly for steam, amazon. gog and gamersgate deals. The others not really)

Well, sales seems way to common now, so probably the next it "soon" :D
Oh, by the way, it's also not that hard to amass a collection just from free games. For example in the past few months I got from GOG: The Witcher 2, Mount & Blade, Little Big Adventure and Aliens vs. Predator Classic 2000 (and there was at least one other free game I didn't get). The Paradox newsletter gave me Cities in Motion, Bundle Stars gave me Penguins Arena: Sedna's World, and there are quite a few other free games given by all manner of sites (mainly stores and bundle sites which are also stores), for example Origin is currently giving away SimCity 2000 (and they gave Dragon Age in October and Battlefield 3 in May, for example, so you can get even AAA games for free).

Oh, and last but not least, you can enter giveaways and win games that way, either here on the forum or on Steam Gifts or other giveaway site (and there are quite a few). There's quite a bit of gift giving going around on this forum, but if you go that way it would IMO be nice to give back at some point.

For the love of God wait, hold off, don't buy, turn off your PC etc.

There will always be more sales somewhere on the Internet and you will always be able to pick up good deals from time to time.

A good rule of thumb is: don't buy the game unless you absolutely want to play it right now or in the next week or two.

With 379 GoG games and 669 Steam games I have totally failed in this but I am still learning so....
