Man I hate trying to search and find stuff here.

I'm trying to find a post I made around April 24 regarding a game that was free one day on Steam (Red Orchestra 2) and I can't find that damn post anywhere.

Do you put your screen name in and search, put your screen name in and some subject material and search or is the search function here so basically borked it doesn't matter what you put in??? Because after trying the first two, or at least I think I tried them correctly, I'm leaning toward the third.

For recent posts (last week or so), go here and click on "show more" under "Topics I've participated in" until you find what you're looking for.

For older posts, you can go to Google and search "xxxxx site:gog.com/forum/general".

The search function here isn't too reliable, and I've found Google to work better. Usually a few keywords can do the trick.

Yeah, I know about the screen for posts within the last 24 hours and posts within the last week, but there should be some way to find posts older than that.

Plus, if I'm not mistaken, April 24 is technically "within a week" since it was one week ago today, but it's not showing up there.

I actually didn't link the "My posts" page, but the "Community" page. There's a sort of endless scrolling list of topics in which you've participated. I'm not sure how far back it can go, though (it might just be the same topics that appear on the "My posts" page).

If what you're looking for doesn't show up there (and you can't find it in your browser history), Google is a great alternative. GOG's search function is a bit iffy, but with the right search keywords you can find what you seek! You can also filter the Google results to a certain date range to better target what you're looking for.

edit - was it a thread you made, or was it posted in a different thread?

I tried my google fu, but only found this thread: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/red_orchestra_2_will_be_free_on_steam_today/page1

...which has no post of yours though, sorry.

Oh yeah, sorry, I do see you referenced a different screen. Still though, I clicked on the "See more" button until it disappeared and no luck, and they sure do look eerily similar to the threads under the "my posts" page.

I just did a quick google search (actually ixquick, which uses google but keeps your privacy) and got no luck either, but I suck at searches so that's probably not google's fault.

I swear though at most forums I've ever posted at, it was always much easier to find stuff, particularly my own stuff.

Yeah, I got that one too.

There was another post where it was being discussed, because it was a question as to whether or not you had to actually download the game or at least start downloading the game in order to keep it. And I posted I would gladly be a test subject since I didn't particularly care whether or not I eventually ended up with the game.

So, I didn't start the download at all.

And I can say, a full week later, that despite not ever starting the download at all, the game still appears on my library and when I go to install it now, it appears to have no trouble as no warning screens or anything pop up. I still haven't actually started the download because it's a huge file (over 10GB) and I don't want it at all on this laptop, but I did pretend to start it today, and it appears to work.

So I wanted to respond in the right thread that the test results were in, but now I can't find the thread. LOL

No worries. Yea, as chevkoch posted I could only find the other thread by another poster. I checked the gaming deals thread and didn't see anything by you in there, either.

One thing with Google is that not all threads may necessarily be indexed, so it's not wholly reliable.

With the GOG search function, I haven't quite mastered it. Searching a user's name will bring up threads in which that person was quoted, since the search goes through post content only (not necessarily each poster's name next to avatars). Adding a couple more descriptors should help, but LOL the search here is kind of bizarre.
Have you tried a search with your preferred search engine?

Something like OldFatGuy site:gog.com/forum, plus narrow it down around the date you're interested?
It is possible that it was removed for some reason. It's only my speculation, but one would expect to find couple of separate threads about free RO2, but I can find only one.

I think this is the post you're looking for:

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/ninja_giveaway/post70741

I didn't use any search tricks to find it, just vaguely recalled it was in the Ninja thread and went back a week's worth of pages. :)

This is how GOG will be able to improve the wonky forum's inner cybersearch, by stapling your mind to it! ;)
Nice work, chean!

The Ninja thread?!?!?! Wow, didn't expect that. THANK YOU.

Oh, and for the record, the ninja thread doesn't appear under "Topics You've Participated In" OR "My Posts" despite the fact that, you know, I've participated in it and have lots and lots of posts in it, including very recently.

Yeah, I think your mind is a much better search engine than gog's. LOL

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

LOL, I'm gonna mark your answer as the solution, since apparently the solution is to PM you with search issues here at gog. LOL
