A platformer with the darkest of souls.

Spelunky, a fun but very unforgiving platformer with procedural level creation, dynamic and diverse gameplay, and charming 2D graphics, is available 50% off on GOG.com. That's only $7.49 for the next 24 hours!

What makes an adventurer? Is it the stylish, but worn outfit with the dusty old hat? No, we've seen adventurers dressed in all kinds of rags. Is it his faithful weapon of choice, like the whip? Again, no. Some adventurers make do with an old umbrella and you don't see them complaining. Is it the imposingly funny sidekick, providing comedic relief to each situation, whether the hero likes it or not? No, many adventurers are lone wolfs. So, what do they have in common? The answer is: complete and utter disregard for danger, and very little imagination. This is a story of such an adventurer. A story, that would never take place if its hero knew any better.

In Spelunky, you'll be exploring ancient temples, caves, and ruins so packed with deadly monsters and traps, that virtually every step you take without dying is a cause to feel good about your gaming skills. The underground is full of forgotten treasures, gleaming gold nuggets, and shiny gems. Get the loot, escape the traps, beat the beasts, and rescue the damsel in distress (or a boy, if you're playing a female character). If you want to feel like a daring archaeologist/adventurer and you're not afraid of any danger, this game will feel like a dream come true.

Brave the breakneck underworld and try--just try!--to escape with all the precious treasures you can carry in Spelunky, for only $7.49 on GOG.com. Don't wait, because the 50% off discount offer lasts only until Thursday, October 24, at 9:59AM GMT.

Hillsy_: You can try and dodge the spectre/ghost, but he takes up quite a bit of the screen; which if he touches you then it is an instant death.
avatar
inc09nito: Well, in 99 Levels it wasn't entirely impossible to avoid the ghosts either. But the thing is that I prefer to explore levels at my pace. And being constantly pushed by such a time-limit mechanics ruins my enjoyment.
I don't say it's something bad in overall, but it's definitely something I don't like personally.
I understand where you are coming from, best to avoid this one then.

I was playing this on the Amiga the other day and I still can't finish it after all these years. Think I'll stick to Ruff 'n' Tumble instead :)

jamyskis: I assume he means the promise of a Humble Store release that never materialised. Not sure what the problem is unless he was hoping for a Steam key AND DRM-free release.
Indeed.

And it WAS a lie, it is a problem (to me at the very least). Couldn't buy it when it came out so I did not.

rjspring: just watched the promo video, wow - sure isn't the Mario brothers platforming I'm used to but still looks fun. also looks like it needs a gamepad to play effectively.
I grew up playing the old 2D Mario games ( maybe that's part of why I still enjoy these traditional side-scrolling Jump'n'Run type games ) and Spelunky actually has many similarities to old-school Super Mario. For all I know the developers are big fans of the old Nintendo games themselves and draw inspiration from them. The game is incredibly well crafted and detailed, and the difficulty level is challenging but ( mostly ) fair, just like the old classics.

Edit: Oh, and I've been playing with an official Microsoft pad which works very well for me. But others claim to do better with keyboard controls, so I guess it's a matter of personal preferences.

While I don't know the details, I have to say I find it hard to believe that Derek and Co. would intentionally spread false information among their potential customers. It's probably much more likely that it was just some mix-up or whatever. ( I can see how that would still be irritating, but outright calling them liars seems a bit harsh and uncalled for. )

You shall never escape its grasp! *cackles evilly* ;) =P

Starmaker: I played the free version and got supremely bored in three rooms. Any reason I should try the ee?
If you didn't enjoy it before I doubt you'll change your mind with the new one as it really is just a more and expanded version of the same.

I finally got myself a Logitech F310 pad yesterday, which I gave quick test with Assassin's Creed (that game is pretty awkward to play with keyboard&mouse) last night and seems to work quite nicely as in Xinput mode it functions very much like a 360 pad, so I think I shall give that a go with Spelunky in a little bit to see how it compares.

Of course it's a promo for something I want on the day before I get paid and I have moths fluttering around in my bank account. I'm fairly sure that's how GOG times these things.

If life's a bitch... GOG's your dominatrix. =P

It sure seems that way :P

Edit: Anyway, Paypal has a delay on when they take out my money, so I'll play with fire just for today.

Hrmm... I'm conflicted here. The sale is nice, and I *want* the game, but like Zoidberg, I'm upset about them stating (on their website) that the Humble release is coming "soon", but it's been over 2 months, with not a word about it, and I'd like to have both DRM-free and daily-challenge versions.

Fake edit: Just looked at their website now, and it says nothing about Humble anymore, and the buy page lists what it's already been released on. I guess that deal fell through. GOG version it is! :D

I still would like some sort of confirmation or denial of what's going on though...

Real edit: Found the page I was talking about (which is written in a fairly outdated way now), now no longer linked on the site: http://spelunkyworld.com/cominghome/

This is a great deal. With the exception of Arma 3's multiplayer, I've played Spelunky more than any game released this year. It's crazy addictive and I've yet to get bored of it. I'd even go so far as to say it's a contender for my GOTY. It's too bad the GOG version doesn't have Daily Challenges, though, as they're a pretty cool feature.

If we were allowed forum signatures here, this would be mine. Brilliant. :)
The controls seem to be fighting against you. Yes you could rebind them, but the fact it wouldn't let me configure a a controller gives me particular issues. (I can make a script to do the job, but the in-game help is less than helpful at that point, unless you map letter to letter).

A number of games are moving towards that since you do movement with your left hand (with a controller) that WASD are your movements (and since most people are right handed, that leaves your right hand free for the mouse). This game by default has the normal arrow keys. The default key bindings also (ASZX) simply have no real meaning by themselves, and I keep finding myself stopping and saying 'which button was it again that did xxx?'.

On a controller I know the controls would be intuitive since most of them are rather standardized, or if not, simply remapping them would make it so much easier, but on the keyboard there's this identify/crisis I keep coming up with.

I could play with the keyboard but much like the camera control in 3D games where you can't tell it to pull the camera by the reverse, you mentally slowly have to get reprogrammed in order to play the game, and then going anywhere else suddenly becomes annoying as every control is backwards and you're going in circles giving yourself nausea just trying to move. Quite annoying. (This in fact is one of the reasons I have not played prince of Persia at all)

Maybe very little of this is relevant, but I thought I'd bring it up.
Gosh darn it, this is not my kind of game at all, it looks very stressful. But the video looks so fun that I just bought it.
And while the wallet was out I added The Swapper and Lilly Looking Through to my basket.
