What goes bump in the night?

Don't Starve, a wilderness survival sandbox game with many original ideas, item crafting, and remarkable visuals, is available 50% off today on GOG.com. That's only $7.49 for the next 24 hours!

Cast in the middle of unwelcoming wild you will need to learn to take care of yourself without all the commodities and luxuries that our civilization provides. It's back to the basics! You need to gather supplies, hunt, avoid dangers, and learn how to make a living in the harsh realm that became your new home. When you're alone in the woods death can come to you in many different ways. A bee hive might prove to be far more dangerous than a forest fire. But your most lethal and persistent enemy is hunger. What am I going to eat today--that's going to be your first thought every day. At least for the first week. Then--well--let's just say the game will throw many challenges your way.

Don't Starve is what you get when you mix survival horror gameplay (with the emphasis being on the "survival" part) with cartoony Tim Burton-esque graphics, and fun crafting mechanics. The game is really challenging, and the diverse world your character is cast into constantly evolves and grows with the creators' more or less regular content updates.

It's your chance today, to grab Don't Starve for only $7.49 on GOG.com! That's 50% off until Thursday, August 29, at 9:59AM GMT.

Mirkat: My question though is the game's non-steam method of adding mods easy to use? Because having Steam Workshop to manage mods seem like the easier way to do such things.
avatar
Piranjade: The in-game updater doesn't add mods as far as I can say, it adds new content.
You start the game, it looks whether there is an update, then you can install it if you want.
Is it easy to add user created mods yourself with DRM free build?

Here's a page with some user mods for Don't Starve. These should work with the DRM Free version :)

Hm, right now I am still pondering. I have watched some friends playing and the gameplay looks appealing. Actually this would be something I was looking for for quite some time. But, alas, I really really don´t like the art style. I am not saying anything against the at style, since this is only about my personal preferences. The same preferences that made me pass on Machinarium or those Edna adventures (well, you can add crappy gameplay to the ladder too).

And now excuse me, I need to ponder some more... Great gameplay! But the looks... But the gameplay and game mechanics look AWESOME! Yeah, but the looks... Well, maybe I am just stupid here.

Yeah, that's basically the same for me as well.
I'd probably really like the gameplay, but I can't get over that art style, and I'm pretty sure it would take away some of my enjoyment of the game.

nijuu: Stuff HB & Steam. GOG is where its at. Otherwise why are people here (aside for the classics)?. Very nice promo. Was holding out for a Don't Starve promo :). Thanks GOG!! *bought*

Wait a minute whats this on the gamecard :

"Notice: Besides the usual patches on GOG, the game features an optional automatic update system that requires the serial key from your account page. "

tokisto: People are here to get good games DRM free at a good price. If they find that first in other place they probably will buy it there. Just this. I´d like to see GOG tuned with promos at other places, because I wanna see this going long and sucessful, since it needs sales to keep the store. This is not a loyalty club.
Would argue many are a bit more loyal to GOG and prefer to get any drm free game here if possible (funds permitting).Having said that, you are right in terms of promo's....

I actually bought the game just for the graphics. I love them to death. I don't get much out of the game, but I like to play it sometimes just for the pretties. It almost makes me wish it were more of an artwork like The Path, Dear Ester, or Proteus. Its not though. Its all game. Just goes to show how much different we all are.
I'm not sure if this is valid but the Don't Starve forums suggest you can use your serial key to access it on Humble Bundle:

"The Standalone version for your key can be found at https://www.humblebundle.com/s?key={YOUR KEY HERE}"

Maybe, if effective, that would help people who have it on Steam and want it DRM free or GOG users who'd also like it on HB (?).

No. They meant their HB key for the pack. After buying a HB you get a unique HB key to access all content you bought. This key is no serial key from just one game.

Bloodygoodgames: And no, I haven't gotten anywhere near finishing the game yet as I always, always die -- but it's still an awesome game, which I highly recommend.

mistermumbles: Can one actually beat this game? I was under the impression it's another one of those 'trying to survive as long as possible' types.

While I wasn't too keen about this game at first, it has grown more appealing to me over time. Not sure whether I want to buy it right now. I kind of want to wait until they're done adding stuff to the game.
As far as I know you can because there's an adventure mode in game if you find the door to get into it. That's beatable as far as I know but I haven't played that part of it yet so......I could be wrong :)

But yes, the main game -- the survival mode part is just that and infinite -- as far as I know :)

ww_gog: ^ Agree with Bloodygoodgames.
This game is not "meh". This game is not one that looks all that complex but looks can be deceiving. This game is not one you beat once and put it away forever.

This game IS awesome. It is more than meets the eye and definitely addicting. You won't come close to beating the game in multiple playthrus but the challenge/desire to do so is there and combined with everything else, will keep you coming back to see how far you can make it. Wait till you make it to winter for the first time and see how you must change your methods from season to season in order to survive. Wait till night approaches and you realize you don't have all the necessities to make a fire and get to daylight again. Wait till you're far from camp and you hear the distant sound of wild dogs who caught your scent. Wait till its night and you hear the thrashing of a deerclops very close by with nowhere to run until daylight cuz you realize you have no torch. Yep, so many ways to die and have fun to try to beat everything the game throws at you just so you Don't Starve. Which in all honesty is not that hard to do. You should die a dozen other ways first.

Wonderful little gem..
Awesome description :)

This game and WazHack have become the two games I go to when I have a little down time and don't want to have to remember where I was in an RPG or which part of the adventure game I'm currently playing I'm now at.

You can pretty much pick up where you left off in both of them without having to think too much although.....with WazHack, I'm usually starting at the beginning as I die ALL THE TIME -- it's an awesome rogue like too, btw, if you haven't played that. And completely addictive.
