We’ve come to the conclusion that there are a number of issues with using a customer’s IP address to determine what offer they are being presented with from GOG.com. A good number of users can find themselves negatively impacted by a policy of using geo IP to set their region.

For example, customers may be travelling when they want to purchase or download a game from GOG.com. In this case, automatic IP address capture might change the price or the content of the game they’re ordering (such as the default language of the installer). Further, geo IP data collection is not always right. IP addresses are not a perfect or unique identifier of location, and can report the incorrect region of users, particularly ones who are not using standard Internet connections. Finally, we’re always very sensitive of our users’ privacy. Effective privacy protections for our users means that any data that we don’t need to collect, we shouldn’t. We only need to know the country that you’re making this purchase from, so although we originally planned to use geo-IP to determine user’s location, we’ve decided to trust our users and let them inform us as to the correct region for their purchase.

Any of you who are having problems with your country’s location (and the offer you're presented with) can update this by going to ”My Account” and clicking on “Account & Settings."

The change is now live on GOG.com and will effect all current purchases and preorders.

EDIT: We'll update the privacy policy on our website to reflect this tomorrow, because we're having caching problems with it today. rest assured, the new changes are in effect even if the page doesn't show it.

TheEnigmaticT: Let's just say I am not best pleased.
A couple hundred of Euros for the result currently visible are... well let's just say not satisfactory ;)
If one thinks about it, one must wonder if the guys over at that "agency" are incompetent or just plain stupid to think that such a lousy translation (probably automated as stated earlier) wouldn't raise a few eyebrows...

GameRager: Irrelvant in a few days or not, I hope this is a permanent change. ;)
You got my full approval, I really hope that this is a permanent change!
Especially because as far as I know this is a unique "feature" in the whole digital distribution industry!
(For a few negative examples *cough* Microsoft *cough* one just has to scroll back up a few posts ;) )

BreathingMeat: Does the content depend on your country at the date of pre-order, or the date of purchase, or the date of download?
avatar
TheEnigmaticT: It is reliant upon your location at the moment of purchase.
Thank you for that. One more thing: I read somewhere that the version available to people in New Zealand has the same content changes as the version available to Australians. Can you please confirm? If so, I think that is a bug. They have a whole different book o' laws there in NZ.

Oh also: Are there any games besides The WItcher 2 on this site that have regional differences in content?

Agorath: First of all I’d like to say I really appreciate this move, great work GOG!

But one thing I just noticed bugs me a little...I still got the German pre-order page
Same here - presumably GOG are using a old Geo-IP data since I use Tor for all web access and changing servers did not change the language (my account is set to UK also).

Given that browsers report their preferred language when requesting a webpage anyway, GeoIP is a truly dumb approach to providing multilingual content. GOG are well rid of it.

NZ gets the Australian version (it looks Atari and NamcoBandai have lumped NZ in with Australia for distribution) but I have noticed here a number of people from Australia and NZ suddenly going overseas for a couple of weeks on holiday

Oh yes, I'm sure I'll be able to find a work-around if GOG's local distribution is faulty.

Local to New Zealand, that is.

"Yes" to the first question, and "No" to the second.

Thank you, T.
I made the grave mistake of jumping right in and buying the game without realising that 1) there was an edited version for Australians and 2) that I could change my location and get the non edited version. Got caught up in the excitement and just hit purchase, instead of my normal cautious nature. That'll teach me.

Hey does this make me the only Australian to post on this topic, now there is a dubious honour.
