I'm going to pray to the blackest, darkest god I know that this doesn't suck: Dio can you hear me, I am lost and so alone. I'm asking for your guidence, would you come down from your throne?
It looks alot better than I thought it could be. The monk level is almost identical to one of the eternal darkness levels. Even if it copies alot of the Eternal Darkness levels in HD graphics, I'll be happy, there hasn't been a game quite unique like that in a very long time.

Sure the game was known for the panic effects, however it also had great characters and story in the original and looks to being replicated on to the spiritual sequel, which is a very good thing =)

I am cautiously optimistic on this one now. ^_^
i am slightly enthousiastic about it. I am just worried how they want to fund it. They are asking 1.500.000 just for the pilot episode... For all we now that's an hour of gameplay....

\m/ Dio! :P
Could someone please explain to me what's so special about Eternal Darkness? I mean, I played the game halfway through, until I got bored and just watched the remaining ctscenes on YouTube. I even tried playing it in the dark past midnight, but I just can't be scared by flickering lights, utz-utz-utz sounds and tilted cameras. Even my fridge contains more elder horrors that feed on your sanity than this game. I guess the insanity effects were neat the first few times, but after that it got really predictable. "Oh noes, my character has fallen apart, what could that possibly mean?". Combat was really easy as well, chop off arms, chop off head, finish the rest. Every single time.

That's the problem when telling the story in a game through cutscenes. We are always told how powerful and beyond human comprehension the ancients are, but all we are shown in the actual game are just some pushovers that can be killed by by completely unskilled fighters. We are told how merely looking at these creatures can drive you insane, but all this insanity does is tilt the camera and play a few silly gimmicks, like making you walk along the ceiling. I just can't feel the threat.

It was an amazing game at release but some classics don't age well. Eternal Darkness is still a good game but when you play it now without having played it at release it will feel a bit dated. Same for Ocarina and Medal of Honor Allied Assault and a lot of other classics. You can see it most in games who were amazing at time where technology or game developement and mechanics took a big step. (ex. 2D to 3D, More story driven shooters, active combat in rpg's,...)

Edit: It was scary then, i had amazing graphics, a good story (for it's time), it was an adult game on a nintendo system, It was a bit like resident evil but was completely in 3D, it used different timezone and playable characters,...

You're right, I played it years after its release on my Wii. I had a GameCube but for some reason I never got around playing it back then. I just knew that there wa still a lot of hype around the game, lik a hidden gem, so I gave it a try. I think I see your point.

Secret of Mana was a similar experience, I played it many years after its release and it had aged awfully. The combat has lags all the time, collision detection is all over the place and the leveling was a total mess where every single weapon and spell had to be leveld up individually, for each single character. However, at the time it must have been incredible to have game that was like Zelda, except you could play it with your friends at the same time.

I consider Ocarina of Time to be the most overrated game ever. Not bad, it's still a good game and the fact that it's even playable, considering that it is one of the early 3D games, is an achievement in itself. What got on my nerves were the "puzzle" dungeons (where the puzzles can be solved by a lobotomized monkey) and allthe forced gameplay stuff that should never have been in the game to begin with. I stopped playing at the Gerudo Fortress because I just didn't want to put up with the horrible stealth gameplay anymore.

EDIT: That's not to say i cannot enjoy old games, most of the games on GoG are completely unfamiliar to me and there is a lot of games from older consoles I like, like Castlevania or Contra or Zelda. There are also games where I think "meh, this isn't that good", like the Disney platformers by Capcom (which is blasphemy to say).

The trouble with the sanity effects is that everyone knows about the sanity effects--and did even when the game was launched.

I once talked to someone who'd played without knowing what she was in for--and when the 'fly' started moving around the screen, the chap whose copy of the game it was decided to play along and 'swatted' it. For her, it was a memorable experience...
You shouldn't back this for the pure reason that Denis Dyack has said stupid things and killed his own company: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-03-28-silicon-knights-used-games-are-cannibalising-the-industry

Well, it's kind of hard not to know about the sanity effects when it's written on the back of the frigging box ;)

Cautiously optimistic, but there's no way I'm giving Denis Dyack my money after the shit he pulled with that X-Men game.

What do you expect from a licsensed game, I knew it was gonna be a forgetful game from the start like Aliens: Colonial Mariens, and this was before I knew anything about this Denis Dyack.

But fuck man now we lost a potentially great game, all because of gamers dignity, yet they donated to Richard Garriot who did pretty much shady things aswell :P
