Danger ahead!

Spelunky, a fun but very unforgiving platformer with procedural level creation, dynamic and diverse gameplay, and charming 2D graphics, is coming soon to GOG.com!

In Spelunky, you'll be exploring ancient temples, caves, and ruins so packed with deadly monsters and traps, that virtually every step you take without dying is a cause to feel good about your gaming skills. Where is danger, there also are rewards! The underground is full of forgotten treasures, gleaming gold nuggets, and shiny gems. Get the loot, escape the traps, beat the beasts, and rescue the damsel in distress (or a boy, cause they get in trouble just as much!). If you want to feel like a daring archaeologist/adventurer and you're not afraid of any danger, this game will feel like a dream come true.

Spelunky will be coming your way next Thursday (August 8), but you can start practicing your treasure-hunting skills today! Spelunky was initially released on the PC as a small freeware game, with the same amount of challenge as the upcoming modern version, but not as much depth and simplistic graphics. If you want to get a taste of spelunking action, the classic freeware version can be downloaded on the gamecard (the link's right above the "coming Aug. 8" notice).

Have fun with Spelunky Classic and expect even more special spelunking features on GOG.com before the new Spelunky comes!

DarkoD13: I think it has to do with Barefoot Essentials. I deactivated it and the link suddenly appeared. I assume you don't have the script installed?
Link works fine for me, and I'm using Barefoot..

edit: oh!

If there is anyone that has bought and played the 360 version some, can you say what the big differences between the classic and this remake are?
Hey, freeware item included! :D Hope we get to see more good old freeware, GOG! (I do think it deserves its own page, though, so it can count amongst the other 9 or so freebies we have now.)

EDIT: Oh, the original Spelunky isn't actually that old! Oh well, glad you provided a link. :) Unfortunately, for me there was graphical flickering in-game, similar to Treasure Adventure Game.

The HD version is better in virtually every respect, though some people say they enjoyed the original's music more.

Quick list of improvements:

- Went from pixel art to beautiful high-def hand drawn art

- Much better physics and much smoother controls

- New items, new enemies, new random events and new secret levels to explore

- No more "dead zones"(from off camera), everything in the maps continues ticking

- Offline Co-Op and deatmatch, bots available for deathmatch

- Lots of new cosmetic character skins for your adventurer.

- MUCH more challenging. A big reason for this is the tighter camera zoom on your character, in the old one you could see much more space around your character.

The game will likely be $14.99(that is the XBLA) price. IMO it's totally worth that, it's utterly brilliant, easily up there with rougelikes like Issac and FTL.

Excellent description! Very useful. I had already played the original (and loved it although my deaths are quite frequent) but wanted to know the differences with the upgraded one.

+1!
man this is one of my favorite games on Xbox 360. glad to see a DRM free release of the remake!

Sabin_Stargem: I have really enjoyed Derek Yu's creations, and can only hope that this signals the addition of Aquaria to GOG's lineup.
Oh, I tried the demo of that ages ago and totally forgot about it! Time to look for it on the wishlist...

Zoidberg: It isn't added to the list of games, it's just linked on the Spelunky 2012 page.

Dray2k: Yeah, which is why I said it would be awesome to have this game on our shelves aswell.

Of course it's nothing of importance, but it would still be a nice thing to have.

And what about people who have missed this game? I mean GOG has a few Freeware games to give when people create an account and you can list them by using the filter. But on this particular game people actually have to be interested in the "true" version of the game in order to download the freeware version.

I hope you understand what I mean since I don't want to make an issue out of it because it isn't really one. It just would be nice :)!
Googling for "Spelunky" leads to the official website where lays a big banner with "play the original"...

So I dunno...
Spelunky is inspired by this game:

Great news! ^_^
