It flies! It shoots! It operates the door-handles!

Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition, ultimate HD remake of the classic top-down arcade DOS-era shoot 'em up, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $2.39 for the next 24 hours!

Shoot 'em ups are one of the most classic game genres in existance. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and flavors. Lately, one of them became overwhelmingly popular. The so called "bullet hell" games, infamous for covering nearly the whole screen with enemy projectiles and having the player navigate frantically to avoid damage. Fun as it may be, this is not how it was done in the good old days. In classic arcade titles it was the other way around--nearly all bullets on the screen were being shot by your craft, bringing fiery destruction to waves upon waves of your foes, and waves upon waves of sheer satisfaction to you. This, brave fighter pilots, is one of these classic games.

Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition has everything that made the classic shoot 'em ups so enjoyable. As a mercenary pilot you get to fly a powerful Raptor jet-fighter that you can upgrade in between missions with the money you earn for successfully taking down foes and demolishing enemy structures. Each mission takes you through waves of increasingly difficult bad guys coming at you from the top of the screen as you make your way up, towards the giant stage boss. The game in 2010 edition comes with enhanced, high-res graphic modes, but you can still play with the original visuals for extra-nostalgic experience!

Unleash the pixelated bullet hell in Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition, for only $2.39 on GOG.com! The promo lasts until Tuesday, April 9, at 10:59AM GMT.

tinyE: Looks like Tyrian. Does it play life Tyrian? Specifically, does it have similar classic arcade mission structure ala Tyrian
Not really. In Tyrian you can often select different 'next missions'. I.e. choose between different paths to follow. Raptor is more linear. But it shares with Tyrian the appeal of upgrading your ship and choosing your weapons, though you won't get to fly a shooting carrot (you only have the one ship you start with, not different models). So in the freedom-of-choice area Tyrian is definitely superior to Raptor. But Raptor has better graphics and better sound and is just as fun to play. (Actually I liked it even more for some reason, even if rationally Tyrian is the game with the better mission design etc.)
Awww yah! Good times.

I'd like to buy whoever wrote that another cup of coffee. Funny shit.

Thank you!
You really feel comfortable calling a standard graphics scaler filter an "ultimate HD remake"? In that case, isn't every GOG DOSBox release potentially an "ultimate HD remake"?

I seriously doubt if it will ever get more ultimater and HD-ier, so yeah ;-) HD, because of the high resolution this version supports, and ultimate, because it's the most upgraded version you can currently get.

Although, that might have been overstating things. That's only because I don't care much for high res version, and prefer to play with the original graphics. Nostalgia factor!

This awesome game is an absolute must-have in any gamer's collection.

Those who do not have it yet should seize this opportunity.

:)
"HD version" looks like DOSBox with 2xsai scaler enabled :D (I'm aware that DOS-based games from GOG mostly run on DOSBox :)).

@Barry_Woodward
WarZone 2100 is available as freeware so I think there's no point in releasing this game on GOG. Yeah, free version lacks all FMVs (which are HORRIBLE) and music (all 4 audio tracks), but everything else is still there :).

HD if anything looks like hq2x counterpart of scaling in DOSBox. Sai has completely different filtering effect than hq (sai is gradient, gradation and dithering instead of smoothing and rounding on borders of hq, most notable is texts in 2d platformers and top-down shooters + unified colors of sprites). For true HD it should be at least 1280x720 or 1024x768 but since Raptor has 640x400 (kind of HD compared to games like Tyrian and their 320x200) with 960x600 and HQ filter it's okay to call it HD version compared to old one.

trusteft: Since when Galaga and Tyrian have similar mission structure?
My post was a little vague, sorry. I mean in the classic arcade sense, there is your ship, there are the bad guys, blast away survive, wait for more bad guys, blast away survive, wait for more bad guys. The sequences may be divided somewhat differently (Galaga had a brief pause and score update, 1942 has you quickly land and take off from the carrier, Tyrian actually has a mission select screen) but they are more or less the same routine. Mind you I'm not bemoaning that fact and while I am beyond sucking when it comes to these games I still love them and I will probably pick this up.

Tyrian has also secret levels that aren't necessary available by normal selection on map unless you trigger them during mission (shoot some destroyable hidden part of the level or collect data cube). Full episode 3 was available only on hard difficulty and true ending to the episode 4 was after you defeat boss in time an get prototype modded stalker (trapped in future plot). Raptor is classic mix between arcade and story mode, arcade is for missions and waves while story part is hangar, shop and stuff, also intermission screens at the end of episodes.
I like these types of games, but I would really like GOG to get FireFight on here.
That was a really fun spaceship shooting game. That I wish we still had.

Just bought it and while I do like Tyrian more I think for this price you'd be silly not to pick it up.

jpolastre: It's not the first time I see this either. Check Earth 2160 that was on promo last weekend. Its screenshots are even worse (but may have been corrected by now).
avatar
cich: Yeah, I've got the same problem with Earth 2160.
GOG must be going FullHD and leaving us, smaller desktopers, behind :(
Same with The Temple of Elemental Evil.

I always wondered why the screenshots are only viewable in this fitted preview size without an option to show them in high resolution. Now it's the complete opposite. :/

Raptor is closer to Tyrian, and much better/fun IMO. Even though Galaga, together with Plutos, is my favorite vertical shoot em up, I have to admit that Raptor is the better game.
There's an annoying mouse lag :/

Supposedly, there's an update? GOG?

I noticed that too so I switched to all keyboard and it was actually better for me all around so I'm staying with that.
