Demon burgers, best served hot!

Painkiller Black Edition, a traditional and classic FPS with non-stop action, legions of butts ready for kicking, great arsenal of badass weapons, and hellishly stylish visuals, is available 60% off today on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 24 hours!

Remember the time when shooting swarms of demonic beasts was a synonym of great, uncompromising fun? The time of games with no covers, no complex tactics, no elaborate dialogue, no touchy-feely cutscenes? Oh, how fun it was just to blast through the hordes of vile monsters, leaving a steaming pile of lead-filled bodies behind you. Good memories! Let's go back to that time of bliss.

Painkiller Black Edition offers you a great selection of impressive action-packed levels, a huge collection of original guns, and swarms of masterfully crafted monsters just waiting to be burned, mutilated and dismembered. You're up against the hordes of hell, and some of the beasts you'll encounter are big as a building. Just imagine how satisfying it will be to blast them back to where they came from! The Black Edition includes the main campaign, as well as the Battle out of Hell Expansion.

There's nothing in this world and next, that should stop you from cheerful demon-slaughter in Painkiller Black Edition, for only $3.99 on GOG.com! The offer lasts until Tuesday, April 30, at 9:59AM GMT.
Great levels, fun weapons, awesome secrets and unlockables... This is one of the very few FPS games that is worth replaying.

For a more atmospheric approach, you can turn off the rock music during combat (as you are in combat quite a bit). Some of the levels are quite spooky without the music.

Obviously spoilers are included in the link below, but if you need help with the secrets (or want an idea of what it takes to find all the secrets, nice vids in this site)...

tinyE: I already own it but anyone into FPS is nuts for passing this up for this price. Even if it wasn't that good, which it is, that is still an unreal price. JUMP ON THIS!

And to any single ladies in the audience, feel free to jump on me. :P
Why? are you cheap too? Yeah, that's right, I went there. Cos Im bad. I'm bad you know it.

Seriously?

You don't need the key to play single player.

beach_bum: I think People can fly should send Yahtzee a briefcase full of money for this review.

I'll give you props for going against the flow. Yahtzee is held up too far on a pedestal, I believe, by the "alternative" gamer group or whatever. "Non-mainstream", lol. I enjoy many of his older reviews and some of his newer ones, but as other people have pointed out in the past, his main focus is nitpicking on titles and being angry. That's where he makes his money.

So basically, don't /not/ buy a game just because Yahtzee thinks it's crap. Do your own research.

Exactly. I find his videos very amusing but his "reviews" should be taken with a grain of salt, I was actually a bit surprised to find that some people actually take him seriously.

HiPhish: Not one of those again... See, when I play an FPS I want to run around and shoot stuff. Forcing me to constantly tap the space bar is just stupid, why not just take that speed bonus and add it to my regular movement speed? This isn't rocket jumping that's used only when it makes sense, I need to bunnyhop all the time if I don't want to go back so snail speed. It doesn't even require any skill, it's just one stupid extra thing you have to do. I just want to get from A to B so I can shoot more things.
That is my take on this as well. While awesome things were discovered via exploits, like skiing in Tribes, bunnyhopping always seemed ... Silly. Good integration that would allow some parkour elements, bouncing off walls, well-timed double-jumps - now that is cool. Having to constantly hammer space to get the optimal speed... Not so much. Then again, you can finish Painkiller without using it.

I've tested it, and you don't need the key to play online multiplayer either. Unless there's a clever antipiracy method that makes you join an offline server full of insanely skilled bots when you try to connect to an online server.

There might be an issue if you join the same server with someone sharing your CD-key (as I assume GOG has put a dummy CD-key into the installation)

True, but without it you are really slow. I discovered bunny hopping because I was getting bored and I started hammering the space bar just to have *something* to do while walking from bubble to bubble. That's when i noticed the speed increase and I figured you were expected to use it to gain a reasonable speed. I'm not good at FPS and I prefer the older ones because the graphics were less fancy and there was less clutter on the screen distracting me, so I'm used to the fast gameplay of Duke 3D, Blood, Descent or Doom. Playing Painkiller feels like my character is wearing a full plate armour. Under Water.

I agree, stuff like wall jumping, rocket jumping or double jumping is cool because hat's the stuff that would be cool to do in real life and it kind of makes sense. Bunnyhopping just feels stupid to me, plus you constantly get the "hugh" sound effect when you jump. I also have a similar issue with strafejumping, but whenever I mention that epople want to tear me into pieces.
Personally, I am so used to strafe-jumping, that I am almost unable to play any multiplayer shooter that doesn't have it.

Hmm... You could say something totally opposite about many "prestigious gaming sites": Their main focus is on praising AAA titles and being lenient. That's how they make money.
So glad I bought this :D
I still have my boxed copy of this, and a GOG version :D

It's a great homage to classic shooters and I think it lives up to the hype. I MUCH prefer it over Serious Sam.

Only bad thing I can say is that the first few levels are pretty dull and don't expect the AI to throw any curve balls at you like modern games. It really is old school lol especially considering the shotgun is pretty much my default weapon, though the steakgun is very satisfying.

Bodkin: I played it after CoD: MW3 (only CoD i have ever played) and i find too many similar game design techniques. And yes, Serious Sam is similar, but better in every respect
I disagree. Painkiller's weapons feel more satisfying, its enemy and level designs are worlds more creative, its music is better, its gameplay is a lot deeper and more varied, it's got better pacing, and it's got a better atmosphere. I like the Serious Sam games, but I consider Painkiller to be superior in almost every way. The only thing Serious Sam has going for it is that it's slightly more strategic.

Besides, how on earth is Painkiller more "CoD-esque" than Serious Sam (I assume you're talking about TFE and TSE?)? Neither game is very much like CoD, save that they're all quite linear. And in the regard, Serious Sam is worse (it's impossible to backtrack in Serious Sam, whereas you can freely explore the levels in Painkiller once you've completed the final room).

I can't agree with you but that's fine, i just wanted voice other side after all these 'This is the best!' as I went with them and burn myself with it.
