4X the hell out of the Universe!

Master of Orion Series, the landmark Sci-Fi turn-based strategy trilogy, is available 70% off today on GOG.com. That's only $4.78 for all three classic titles coming in two packs: Master of Orion 1+2 and Master of Orion 3. Alternatively, you can get them separately 60% off.

It is the human ambition to reach for the stars. But what do you do, once you've reached for them? Well, you grab them. And you squeeze them. You squeeze them hard enough to drain all resources. Then, you go on and build a galactic empire, conquering and crushing all other species that came up with the same idea. The goal here is peace and prosperity, of course. Peace and prosperity for the victors, that is. All that translates brilliantly into a strategy computer game. You explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate--the simple pattern followed by many a turn-based classic. Master of Orion Series is one of the first, and best, examples of 4X gameplay. If you are a strategy fan, but don't have it in your collection yet, here's your best chance to correct that.

Prepare for countless hours of multi-layered, complex, and challenging strategic gameplay! Grab the whole Master of Orion Series on GOG.com. If you already have one of the titles in your collection, you can get the other with the larger discount rate. The offer lasts until Tuesday, November 26, at 10:59AM GMT.
MoO 3 - is it really that bad?

Not to say it isn't, but old reviews I've found aren't nearly as scathing as the fan reviews are.

Wow, IGN gave it a 9.2! LOL.
Nice promo.

I wonder the same :D
Time to see how bad is MoO 3 :)
+ add another of those lowest rated games to my shelf :)

Usually it's the other way 'round!
I remember I used to really respect game reviewers as legitimate critics of games who knew what to look for in a game, in detail, until Barry Brenesal gave Master of Orion 3 a 9.2/10.

He seemed like the ultimate fanboy who could not see the flaws in the game (he even said it has the best AI). Even today IGN follow the same trend. The days of "92%" being meaningful are over. Now every game gets 90 unless it really sucks.

timppu: (Barely played MOO2, but I don't recall seeing any tutorial in it either.)

Avogadro6: Right click on just about anything brings up some really helpful tooltips. Also there's a big huge button in the map screen called INFO.
Is there anything like this in MOO1? As I would like to play them in order and that would really help me to learn the game. In the first one it took me almost an hour to figure out that I actually had to put points into ships to build ships, I had thought that it was for researching new ships or something (and even then I had to read the manual to figure that out, I hadn't read it before which was probably a mistake).
Fantastic games!

HunterZ: I see what you're doing GOG. You're bundling games with poor reviews in with games in the same series that have great reviews in hopes that OCD completionists won't be able to keep themselves from "completing the set" despite having no real intention of playing these games that they don't really care about. I won't be fooled! *clutches wallet protectively*

P.S. I already own MoO 1+2, and see no value in picking up MoO 3. It ought to be included for free with MoO 1+2 or something, as it has terrible reviews (although the top review is a hilarious read).
This pretty much sums it up. GoG almost got me with Might and Magic IX (clever little devils), Ultima 9, and I almost bought Lands of Lore 3 back when I got LoL 1+2. They won't get me yet. Great, now I can hear Dr. Claw's infamous growl "I'll get you next time, [insert name]. Next time..." *cat meow ensued* and now the DiC logo. Nostalgia overdose...
Even though I got 5 games from the last promo, I still got this one. MoO looks like a really in depth game from the screenshots so I snapped up MoO 1 + 2. I've never played MoO before but I love strategy games so I'm hoping it's as good as you guys say it is ;). Writing this while I wait for it to download.

Leaving MoO 3 for now though as the amount of bad reviews the game received has put me off. I trust the community reviews far more than mainstream reviews.
My advice to those who don`t have any of the games:

Master of Orion 1+2 at 60% off > Master of Orion1+2 & Master of Orion 3 at 70% off.

For most strategy gamers, Master of Orion 1+2 will be orgasmic (and a timeless classic for years to come) while Master of Orion 3 will be meh at best, especially given the decent 4x space strategy offerings that followed years later (some of which are available on GOG).

If it helps clarify: MOO 3 was created by a totally different company years after MOO 2 was released. The creative genius that went into the making of MOO 1+2 did not in any way participate in the making of MOO 3.

In short, take the price difference between MOO 1+2 at 60% off and all the games at 70% off and consider that difference an almost guaranteed waste of your money.

k, I think I've done my civic duty in this thread.

Actually AngryJoe made a video over the scandals of "new" game reviewers, and how it is not about games anymore but reaching some sort of quota. It was actually a very good video that unearthed the horrible side to which game review syndicates have turned. But these are different times. There are no more legit companies like Gamefan, GamePro, EGM (well it is no a lifeless carcass), or Next Generation Magazine. Okay, they weren't the best magazines around, but were sure better than Game Informer, IGN, or Gamespot. Actually, I despise everything about those three companies and what they have come and only really follow James OnVard because he normally knows what he is talking about when it comes to RPGs, as his reviews are honest, and I tend to agree with his reviews. That aside, yeah the industry is, and will probably never be, what it once had been years ago.

Not that I remember, but the manual is really exhaustive and definitely worth reading even for those who are familiar with the genre or played MoO2 first (like me).
Speaking of great space empire games, any STARS! fans here? This sale has be wanting to play it but it won't install on my OS.
Well, this is disappointing. Not to mention strange, considering how many copies of MOO1&2 were sold in The Sale, and how awful a reputation MOO3 has.
