EDIT: Contest is over, Pseudoman won. :)

I'm trying to see if the community might be interested in a release of these unknown old-school platformers on GOG, Speedy Blupi 1 & 2. (known as Speedy Eggbert when published by eGames in the US) They may seem pretty simplistic when compared to other platformers like Duke Nukem or Dangerous Dave, but imo they can still be a lot of fun.

How to enter:

- spend at least 5 minutes viewing YouTube footage of the games and read about them below.

- post which classic 2D platformer (a $5.99 title) you would like to enter for. (I reserve the right to say if the game doesn't meet my criteria, but you'd be fine with Duke Nukem 1 & 2, Rayman, Dangerous Dave, Oddworld, Superfrog, etc.) OR select between Heretic Kingdoms, Empire Earth 1, or Broken Sword 1. (I have gift codes handy for those.)

Winner will be picked in about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks. (Or sooner, but probably about that time so this gets decent exposure ;)

They're pure platforming "family-friendly" gameplay. You control the adorable main character Eggbert (or Blupi), and collect a certain number of chests in each level and then exit through the rotating red arrow (or key if it's the final level in a world). The main aspect is the ability to jump at varying heights - small, regular, and large. (Even "huge" if you've eaten the lollypop powerup)

Here's a description I emailed GOG:

"Regarding Speedy Eggbert 1, there's the following and more:

* 30+ levels for the initial game, and numerous user-made levels that can be downloaded. (Mentioned below w/ level editor)

(I should add, gameplay is not always linear as in other platformers. Depending on the design, you can move all around a level [especially if jetpacks are included].)

* Blocks relating to different environments - tech, underground, carnival, library, forest, suburbia, tropical.

* Almost 2 dozen backgrounds related to the different environments

* Lifts, invisible blocks, hidden blocks, springs, wind, water, monkey bars, moveable crates

* Weapons, defense and offense - skateboards, jeeps, shield, glueball tank, jetpack, mines

* Power-ups - eggs (lives), lollipops (height), personal mines, potion

* Background design pieces - houses, foliage, trees, cement, tech, rock, seaweed, columns

* Enemies - clones, birds, sharks, fans, bulldozers, mines (moving or otherwise), lava

* A level editor that allows people to make their own creations; they can share the levels as .xch files.

* 9 jaunty melodies that could be included as the OST

* Over 5 dozen different soundfx

Speedy Eggbert/Blupi 2 takes it even farther with doors, crumbling earth, saws, conveyor belts, hovercraft, portals, dynamite; bees, "slammers", slime, and electricity as extra enemies; and dirt, slime, marble, and CHEESE as new environments. And better-looking lava. And an extra dozen backgrounds and another 30 sound fx. Etc."

There's more I could say, but your best bet to learn whether you'd like the games or not is to view them on YouTube, or try out a demo.

I think that's about it. Let me know what you think! I'm very biased but I think these games have a place here.

Alright, I voted for it (Old 2D Platformers are always acceptable in my book) but, honestly, what kind of name is Blupi anyway? (What does it even mean?)

As for what game I would be in for, that would be Pandemonium, but if it is not acceptable, then I'm not in.
At any rate, thank you both for the giveaway and your continued efforts here on GOG.
Thanks for the giveaway.
Watched the video and voted.
Would like to be in for Rayman Forever.

Isn't there some user named Speedy Eggbert or something similar around here?

Voted. In for Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus.
I forgot to mention, please only vote on the wishlist if you'd actually buy the game. You are only required to watch some YouTube footage.

Well the company, Epsitec, is Swiss I believe, so maybe that's a clue. (Honestly I never thought to ask!) Or maybe the name just sounds kid-friendly. :)

Yes, I think Pandemonium works since it's 2.5D.

In for Duke Nukem Manhattan Project, if you count that as a platformer. If not, that's OK .
Ok, I've watched some videos and I'm in for Oddworld 2, thanks.
Allright - I'm in for ODDWORLD! :-)

Speedy Blupi works on Windows 8 too. Never tried it before. First impressions:

It irritated me a bit that I couldn't change the keys, I had to use autohotkey to get ASDW movement. The resolution is fairly good, 640x480 I think. (Duke Nukem 1+2 runs at 320x240)

I think that the 3 fixed jump hights is a nice touch. It really works well with the grid-based level design.

I think there is a good feeling of exploration - you're curious at what's around the next corner.

The game is over-the-top family friendly, but it got charm and the graphic are pure retro with ultra-primitive pre-rendered cgi. I also like the music.

Looks like the game has a bit of a following, counting the number of youtube flicks.
The level editor is a nice selling point -- but it is kind of biting its own tail, since it requires that enough people buys the game so that the players have a community to share the levels with.

I tried playing with re-skinning the game ... but that seem to result in the game going black at startup for several seconds. Reskinning is super easy, though, since the files in "c:\Speedy Blupi DEMO\Image\" are just .bmp files that has been renamed to .blp! Likewise, the soundfiles are really just renamed .midi files. But it look like someone had been skinning the game already: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_P8C4rHPhA

It's true, it's really easy to change up the sprites if you want. You can make it far less family-friendly if you really want to! ;)

And thanks for sharing that vid! That's a really cool mod, with a Limbo-esque appeal.
Thanks for the giveaway tfishell. I voted for Speedy Eggbert, quite nostalgic as I played it a lot as a kid. We had lots of those eGames compilation CDs back then... memories ;)

Not in, just wanted to comment. ;)
3 hour bump. :)
