I work in the sciences (chemistry), and have a bit of a pet peeve with people using statistics and scientific studies as a drunk uses a lamp post- for support, rather than illumination.

wpegg: You'd best be careful with that peeve. It risks turning into a superiority complex. Before you know it you might find yourself insulting people on forums simply to assert it.

We can argue this till the cows come home. I think that his methodology is sufficiently sound considering the huge range of variables that might affect the outcome. I feel that his research is valid, and should be given weight. Clearly you do not agree.
No, I think he has you beaten. Those flaws he pointed out is pretty major, thus rendering your examples moot.

It's precisely because of the large number of variables that the methodology is not sufficiently sound. Designing a behavioral study to show a meaningful correlation is tough- really tough. In the best case one should look to establish a proper baseline that can basically be used to zero out all the variables that are not being examined. However, as establishing a baseline in behavioral studies can often be rather difficult, the alternative is also examining any potentially relevant variables that could affect the variables of interest. And as I said, designing a study that does this is tough. But this doesn't mean poorly designed studies get a pass. It's far better to recognize that a study is not sufficiently rigorous and better studies are needed to have any meaningful data than to run around trying to make policy decisions based on bad data.
Hehehe.

Op-ed by an out of touch journalist who probably isn't hooked up to digital TV yet.

Grudgingly, here's a guess that the Supreme Court will uphold the precious freedom to sell stupid, overpriced electronic games to children.

Make that stupid, violent games -- another notch downward in the country's cultural decline.

Millions of parents probably aren't aware of the trash the kids are toying with in their rooms in lieu of homework.

Video games are addictive to many youngsters in the first place, which is worrisome enough. A lot parents must wish their offspring would just "go out and play" as in the pre-electronic past.

But leading-edge video games now also make use of savage, anti-social plot elements. So a dozen states would put age limits on their sale. Just make it impossible for under-18ers to get their jollies "killing, maiming, dismembering or sexually assaulting an image of a human being."
Yeah! Games are bad! Addictive! Trash! Because books are such bastions of class and truth. Oh what's this? Portnoy's Complain? Never mind then.

New forms of media always seems to go through this crap. like Rap Music and RPG's, and especially TV, I'm sure there are lots of other examples.

Just wanted to bump this thread with a curiosity I just discovered.

One of the bigger Polish online stores is, predictably, gearing up for a Christmas sale. As such - they figured it would be nice to make some default gift suggestions for clueless people. This piqued my interest when I noticed they divided them into the most offensively age- and gender-stereotyped groups imaginable (bonus sociological exercise: see the attached image and guess the captions for yourselves)... and then I found out that suggested game titles for a male teenager include AvP, CoD:BO, Fallout: New Vegas and DA:O, all 18+ titles.

On the flip side - suggested games for a boyfriend/husband include (all of the above plus) The Sims 3 (and 2) xD.

Why the hell would a person who wants CODBLOPS want a dartboard?

Also - why would anyone buy a console ;P ?

As for the dartboard, in way - why not ? I think Polish geeks lack "class awareness", unless introduced to the concept by foreign media, so it's not outlandish to imagine someone both playing PC games and throwing darts (not necessarily at the same time xD).

Unless you find it odd for some other reason that I didn't grasp...
Here is the full audio of the oral argument, if anyone wants to hear it. It's an hour long.
When i come across the kindergarten in my neighbourhood the little sweet children are playing terrorists and GI-joe. I have a machinegun, no i am the one with the machinegun, you get the letter opener. I don't think they get their education by computer games, being under 6 years old.

Have a nice day
