I imagine it's a charcoal pit. Really, it's a means to produce charcoal-- baking wood in a covered pit to limit the oxygen supply. Based on the many restaurants called something like Char Pit, I'm supposing that the name has been hijacked or misunderstood to be a barbecue of sorts, or any means to cook or burn anything underground or in a hole.

Excellent choice, and giveaway Brasas! Well done w221 and bler144! I like Abrasive Charpit (Char-pit maybe?) a lot! A charpit can also be an old burn hole that is not longer used and just has the remnants of charcoal/burnt stuff (charred) in the dug-out area, it doesn't need to be active, just a place where things were charred in a pit. "Char" is the base-word.
