supplementscene: 3. Low fat
avatar
sanscript: Absolutely not!

Fat are just as essential as proteins, especially Omega3 which the body can't produce.

The body needs fat for energy, vitamins, hormones, stable blood-sugar, and building. Fat also lasts longer and makes you less hungry. Carbohydrates is the only thing the body can be low on (or without entirely).

This fear of fat is only making the situation worse and makes it that harder to maintain a healthy body, especially when you want to build muscles.

Anyway, Good luck xyem! I've gone down about 40-45kg myself so I know it's not easy! :D
Generally people struggle to lose weight unless they cut fats. Fat has twice the calories per gram compared to carbs. Omega 3 in fish is different but adding oil and butter to your food while dieting is a big no no

Generally though eat fish and lean meats like chicken, turkey and avoid fatty cuts of lamb and beef
Not in, but I know you can do it! I've been there... took me a good while to work my way down from 108kg (239lbs) to 71/72kg (157--160lbs), but it's done. As long as you stick to your guns, you can do this.

And my hint? Cardio is a must. I've been averaging 4/5 times a week, 20-30 minutes on the elliptical machine. Weight lifting might make you feel cool, especially when you get to the higher weights, but if you're just focusing on reaching a target weight the extra muscle mass will distract you.

I lost weight mostly by changing my diet.
That's really it.
I moved to Japan, options that were way healthier were more readily available, lost weight.

I don't want this thread to become a flaming ground for how to 'actually' lose weight though.
Calories in n out worked for me. Different shit works for different people.
One of my coworkers is trying to lose weight too.

Seems that 5 meals a day (1500 calorie) at regular times do the trick, he lost 5kg in 3 weeks. Good luck, the most important thing is regularity.

The only reasons as to why people are struggling is that it is very hard to change a lifestyle filled with bad food, and second; these so-called food-pyramids from the governments health recommendation are in serious conflicts with what science and the body actually needs. These "recommendations" are making it more confusing for most people.

These pyramids should be turned up-side down in which food with fast carbohydrates is in the very low.

As I wrote, fat also lasts way longer and makes one less hungry. Combining to much fat and carbohydrates is of course not the way to go, as you'll get the carbohydrates broken up first, and then later comes the energy from the fat.

Fructose in fruits and other sources like normal sugar that is being added to most prepossessed food today is the enemy here, not fat. The body can easily make glucose from fat and proteins, which the brain needs.

EDIT: I know plenty of people who were having a serious health issues and they struggled like hell, like me, and luckily the science can back us up on that what I just wrote ;)

Good luck trying to lose weight. I have some good motivation to work out. The more you work out the more you can eat:D
I'm in because this is fun and productive! :D

Remember you need to kickstart your metabolism, so eat every 3 hours 6 times a day, drink about 3-4L of water, eat around 500 calories less than your RMR (you can use a calculator online), eat lots of greens, and avoid processed carbs and bad fat (pork fat, for example).

Exercising is also helpful. An hour of walking burns around 300 calories (if you're overweight, that is), and that means an extra something you can eat worth 300 calories!

Lifting weights (even low weights, just as long as it's resistance training) also helps boost your metabolism.

Good luck :D

Some change the pyramid to a pie. And there are a bunch of different representations, and views.
Nice to see you back to continue the fight. Make sure to reward yourself too every time you achieve a goal. Every small win counts and will improve your mood to go on with your schedule.
If you can't convince them, confuse them - Harry S. Truman

From Harvard.edu:

"Virtually every cell in the body can use glucose for energy. In contrast, only liver cells break down fructose. What happens to fructose inside liver cells is complicated. One of the end products is triglyceride, a form of fat. Uric acid and free radicals are also formed.

None of this is good. Triglycerides can build up in liver cells and damage liver function. Triglycerides released into the bloodstream can contribute to the growth of fat-filled plaque inside artery walls. Free radicals (also called reactive oxygen species) can damage cell structures, enzymes, and even genes. Uric acid can turn off production of nitric oxide, a substance that helps protect artery walls from damage. Another effect of high fructose intake is insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the “fat is bad” mantra prompted a big shift in the American diet. People and food companies replaced fat, often healthy fat, with sugar, almost always refined sugar. But this sort of low-fat diet—one rich in refined sugar and thus in fructose—is really a high-fat diet when you look at what the liver does to fructose, said Dr. Lustig."

Agreed. "Cut fats" is vastly oversimplified.

Yes, having a loaded potato with bacon and three pats of butter is less healthy than a potato with one pat of butter and some herbs and broccoli.

But the issue isn't a binary yes fat/no fat. It's really WHAT you are eating and what type of fat/what else tends to go with that fat. You certainly should look to cut back on processed foods that contain trans-unsaturated fats, like partially hydrogenated oils.

Even margarine vs. butter isn't entirely simple - in general unsaturated fat (marg) is better for you than saturated fat (butter), but some margarines contain trans fat which is worse than saturated fat. But I digress.

As one example of what you're saying, I stopped eating non-fat or low-fat yogurts and went back to whole fat because a) you tend to get more flavor with less sugar (though this can vary by brand/variety), and b) as you said, fat )or protein) helps it stick with you longer, which should translate to less snacking.

I saw that and my first thought was... that the hard part was getting it to split the molecule and form trinitrotoluene and nitroglycerin. :P the real way to 'suddenly' loose weight.
You scared Xyem!
Xyem, eat what you feel is right for your weight loss, but healthy. Don't be confused by this discoussion, it's all retorical.
I have no fucking Idea what your train of thought is but losing weight is god if you are not going underweight.
