DieRuhe: Just go look at the Steam page. FAQ's.

MarkoH01: With the quote above I was replying to your OP and at the time you did not include any source which I would really suggest if you make such a statement.

As I said the devs saying that GOG did turn down the game because it is being "too niche" does not necessarily mean that this is the only or even the actual reason for the rejection. I was told personally that if GOG is rejecting a game the devs will get a DETAILED explanation. However sometimes those things are under NDA and it might be that they are not allowed to share everything here.
Yeah, I get it; I'm just going with what's provided to possible customers. I can't speculate any further.

X-com: Am I the only one that doesn't like RPG's/Dungeon Crawlers where you can only turn left/right, move forward/back/strafe and only stand in the middle of a square/tile? It seems really constraining
avatar
timppu: Same here, especially if it is (semi)realtime. Sure it was cool for e.g. Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder 1-2, but ever since e.g. Ultima Underworld appeared, I haven't really yearned for these square-dancing RPGs. Even for retro-value, but I guess I will play the Grimrock games at some point...

It just feels so fake and restricted for modern games, with no real benefits.
I didn't feel them that great with the 4 party lock in 'you will play as we intend' vibe. Really miss the dungeon master shops and unlocking your own magic by experimentation.

bler144: For me I thought MMX really captured the strategic possibilities that style allows.
What is that? Might & Magic 10? I didn't even know it would have gone back to the square-based game engine. M&M 6-9 were freeform, not square-based, weren't they?

Sjuan: In what place GOG said that they does not accept The Quest for being very niche?? I can not find it

Alexim: This game seems to have microtransactions, so it could be justified its absence.
avatar
DieRuhe: Nope. Only on the phone version, in the sense that you can play a demo first and then actually buy the game if you want.
avatar
Niggles: Is it originally an android or PC game? (sure looks very androidy)
avatar
DieRuhe: It was originally a phone game, now full-blown on pc.
Has the upscaling/upgrade/move to PC been worth it?. Is it comparable to similar games on similar budget? (maybe GOG doesnt want too many original phone games ported to PC on the site?....)

Correct on both points, yes. Which tended to lend itself to maxing out your ranged attacks and kiting all over hill and dale, at least to thin out the opposition before finishing them off up close.

X really forced both designer and player to approach the game in terms of making strategic choices through the entirety of combat due to both the turn-based and grid-based structures, and I thought they did it well. The last dungeon in particular was really well designed to fit that, I thought.

In the second half of the game some classes unlock skills that are really based around use of the grid - I think it was the hunter who gets a grapple that pulls ranged enemies into melee range. Good fun.

If it is turn-based, then I have less issue with it being square-based, in many cases it even makes sense then. Like Wizardry 7 and such. It was mainly the "semi-realtime" engine that was used in Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder games of which I am less enthusiastic nowadays. To me they always felt more like some kind of half-way solutions, until (action-)RPGs could finally reach freeform engines like Ultima Underworld, Gothic etc.

Oddeus: But who reviews the Top Men?
avatar
kalirion: Top. Men.
Are you talking about The. Top. Men. ?
We have been working on developing an educational RPG for a while. I'll keep in mind that we shouldn't count on GOG for selling it.
Just bought the full game on steam.
And many thanks to the OP that brought this game to highlight.

Sorry GOG.

Considering they are selling the late game in chunks on Steam as in-game items instead of DLC - probably as a way to hide the fact the game has 6 "expansions" you need to buy to get the full thing - I imagine the reason GOG turned down The Quest has very little to do with it being "too niche"

They seems to be additonal expansions, made by third party developers.
Nothing to do with the base game and his one expansion.

Personally, I think is a nice game, much better than some indie platform crap that appears far too often on this store.

Thanks :). Now I'll look on Steam.

Dalthnock: There's also the official pages. I tried linking them all, but my post failed. Maybe GOG doesn't like too many links in one post?
Remove the http:// and https:// bits and just post the url.

Without seeing it, it's hard to tell but yes, you can have more than 1 link is a post.

Personally I think it looks great. It's not like those games that try to be super-retro and end up being hard to make out. It's crisp and clear. It's like if someone were to remake, say, The Bard's Tale and update the graphics. Not to look modern, but just to look much better.
