I was told American McGee's Alice is superior. Why?
EA still sells the sequel. With them finally letting go of their ambitions on Origin superseding Steam and letting games back onto the platform, I've been curious to see if it'll float back there as well.

As to why it was better or worse, the sequel was accused of being buggier than the original game. Some people also believe that the original game had a darker atmosphere to it. The bugs gripe is true to an extent, but I always found both games to be sufficiently dark and creepy.

For what it's worth, American McGee's Alice has also been requested for Zoom Platform, so there's a possibility that it could end up there as well.

For me it wasn't either of those. I think the sequel has a much worse story, and one that actually seriously undermines the original. And the connection to Alice in Wonderland in the sequel is for the most part so tenous as to be almost nonexistant, many levels being just "some weird stuff we just came up with". Hey there, welcome to Weird Chinaland! I don't remember ether game well enough in detail to make an honest comparison in terms of gameplay right now, but I liked the levels in the original much more.

And, of course, the original was, well... original. It was a clever idea and a unique game. Doing it again isn't nearly as interesting.

I'd love to see the first game here and to play it again. The sequel... I doubt I'd pick it up at all.

I really hope GOG will get American McGee's Alice someday. It's a great game!

Maybe ask Canadian McGee or Russian McGee?
I liked the sequel quite a bit, and it's not even my normal genre really. I haven't played the original in a really long time but my memories of both are good and roughly the same.

The original was on Origin briefly when the sequel came out. Not sold by itself, but as a bonus for pre-ordering or something. It's weird it's not sold on its own, I certainly expected it to be after the sequel came out. Maybe McGee has some kind of control over it somehow.
From what I remember, the original might be a bit more varied and on point, while the levels of the sequel (and the sequel itself) might overstay their welcome a bit. I do remember some repetitive fights, and some camera / lock on issues. The original plays like M/KB third person shooter PC game, the sequel more like a gamepad console hack and slash platformer.
American McGee's Alice (original release)

Madness Returns is a fine game if a little rushed but the first game is a cult classic. If GOG ever gets the series it is likely they'll sell the deluxe version of Madness Returns which bundles a "remastered" copy of the AMA. I don't like most PC remasters so hopefully they'd bundle the original release of AMA as a freebie.

Madness Returns shortcomings:
- Only 4 levels (each EXTREMELY LONG. Should have been split for pacing.)
- Only 1 boss ( I suspect they were planned but cut)
I love both games. Madness Returns has, of course, the better graphics, but the first one has a very nice atmosphere too.
I would really like to see both American McGee's Alice (original) and Madness Returns hit GOG.
