I have a new WD Black 6TB drive which is a replacement of the same model drive that was sent in on warranty.

All scans with check disc and WD data lifeguard diagnostics and the SMART system say the drive is all good. A fresh install of windows 7 on the drive takes several minutes to boot at start up, but after installing the motherboard Intel chipset drivers it now boots up nice and quick.

However the windows instal disc / WinPE / WinRE hang during boot at a black screen with the mouse cursor. This occurs both when booting in UEFI mode or MBR.

The drive that was sent in on a warranty claim did the same thing. The drive sent in may not actually have been faulty I think.

If the windows partitions are removed the windows install disc / WinRE / WinPE boot up fine. Linux and other boot discs have no trouble booting, only the windows stuff does.

What the heck is going on and how do I fix it?

The 6TB drive is of course formatted with GPT and I checked to make sure it was aligned.

My motherboard is an Asus P8P67 Deluxe with the latest firmware. All hardware in the system was checked over, there were no faults.

Applying this patch https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/982018 to the windows 7 install seems to fix the problem. But it takes about 2 minutes for the install disc to proceed after reaching the black screen with the mouse cursor.
