GOG Can and does region restrict. I know this for a fact.

Why not just region-restrict Devotion against China and make it available for everyone else.

I presume it's due to Xi Jinping's personal vendeta with Red Candle Games. It doesn't even matter they removed the meme from the game last year. And not hosting the game at all just another cm of tongue up Pooh's ass from CDPR.

That's a great question GOG have yet to answer.

It's an opportunity for supreme leaders to show they have power over the rest of the world. I honestly don't think the CCP or the people of china actually care about the pooh thing. I mean, common, people make fun of leaders all over the world, all the time, and notice i'm not banned for my display image. This is a "maybe we'll let you in our market if you kiss our feet."

It's not like the option wasn't on the table for GOG: they've already done it for other games for other countries.

Because China got bored after censoring their own people for decades, so now they want to branch out to the rest of the world

GamezRanker: Here is what got me a 2 week stay at "Glorious People's Club Gog".

(btw I find it "funny" they gave me a time out for that, yet have no problems playing politics themselves by seemingly giving in to the c-c-p to delist a game so they could make more money)
Way, way better than i was expecting. So, we know what pisses them off.

GamezRanker: They actually sent me a screenshot back then and very explicit reason behind the "leave from GOG".
I said something** about Xinnie the Pooh invading the forums over a game release thread bug....that was about it.
(**= there was messed up text in the release title in asian script, so I made a silly joke about Pooh and Hunney)

(I only mention it as the recent jokes and avatars brought it back to the front of my mind. Btw I still have the screencap they sent if anyone's interested and wants to see it)

Leroux: They seem very inconsistent in how they interact with the forums. My guess is some staff member had a free minute, stumbled upon your post and thought this would be a good opportunity to enforce the "no politics" rule, while most others constantly get away with it, because there is no time for forum moderation or it isn't a priority. And maybe that staff member already had it in for you because of other reasons?
Seems about right.

GamezRanker: (to any staff reading this: I am not questioning mod actions....which I know is a big no no....I am merely giving my opinion on the modding in general)
You know, that in particular drives me mad. The inability to call out hypocrisy, and such. I get mods don't want to deal with drama reagarding a legitimate issue (maybe someone posting a lewd image of a woman who could be 15, or she could be 18, but no one knows, and everyone wants to pick a side and say the other is unreasonable), but you can't generate a power structure that has no accountability and expect BS not to happen. If the primary method of feedback as a customer is provided by the forums, and if the forums have an overwhelmingly totalitarian authority that cannot be questioned, and I'm not reasonably informed prior to making purchases, i think it's reasonable to poke the (pooh, or gog) bear. In the same way i expect GOG to stand up to china, I'll question mod decisions i don't agree with, even if it's against the rules. If i get banned from the forums, then i can go to places gog advertises and point out why i was banned and the moderation decision that i was questioning that resulted in my ban. I have that right as a customer, even if that becomes prefixed with "former."

Tbh I am gonna guess it's less WHAT I posted, and more than I was the one to post it.
(others have posted similar even before all this mess with devotion and not gotten modded at all for similar things)

Oh you can question them alright....in private via PM or etc.....where they weigh in on their fellow mod's decisions.
(which they, of course, usually uphold and go along with in most cases)

The GOG system, in essence, is like asking each cop to be their own internal affairs department and investigate/judge themselves...all while behind a set of closed doors.

-

In most cases they remain silent or say there's no changing their decision....same with this whole devotion mess.

I was going to try to ask you in private "why you?" but it would seem that that despite "start conversation" is not greyed out, it consistently throws me to a 404 page. I'm more inclined to believe you, now, but i'd love to know why.

I got modded (i forget what exact action was taken) from EgoSoft (creators of the X series games) for questioning a mod why they selectively enforced the "no insulting other users" rule based on political affiliation. "Nazis" were fair game, but not 共匪.

Because that's not good enough for China and their petty grudge. It's either all or nothing with them.

On the bright side, this incident has made GOG/CD Projekt show their true colours, which is better late than never (and honestly couldn't have come at a better time for consumers given the 2077 refund situation). It's just such a massive shame that their true colours weren't the ones they built us up for years and years trying to portray.

See that's what I dont get, and what rubs me the wrong way. We (the rest of the world) are not China so why are they wanting us censored, and why the heck are cdpr doing it for them, anyway.

On the side of 'there's no such thing as bad publicity' if nothing else this story has brought the game to my attention and so now I want it see it for myself. Which brings up the question where can I buy it if not from gog or steam ?

I mean, yes you can get it from the high seas, but... shouldn't have to resort to that, and the devs dont make any money that way.

Because they are worried that if they piss off China by listing the game (EVEN in countries that aren't China), that China will deny them the right to do business there entirely (again, all because of one joke that was removed long ago, but the Chinese government is ridiculously sensitive and overreactionary to this kind of thing and will seemingly never let go of a grudge). And GOG make a lot of ill-gotten money from China, so they immediately caved in to appease them. Money > morals for CD Projekt, that much is clear now.
