Maybe I'm hallucinating, but I thought there used to be a way to sort ratings (like Amazon, et al do) so you can parse good and bad reviews? Or at least the most useful reviews were placed first.

Right now it seems like reviews are stacked to make games look favorable and you have to dig through pages of previous reviews to find the non-five-star ratings?

What gives?

There is no (and there never was an) option to sort reviews by negative or positive. However, reviews are sorted by how many people found them useful not by their rating. It is well possible that there are pretty bad reviews in the top places.
Too hard to implement.
If you're familiar with userscripts, you could install Adalia Fundamentals, created and maintained by our fellow GOGger adaliabooks.

You can then sort reviews by "Stars", and have all reviews display on the game page, so you can check the positive and the negative ones easily.
