Does anybody have a picture of what OP is talking about? I've never witnessed this.
Well, here in Germany you hardly ever see indicator lights flashing, since almost no one uses them. And the more expensive the car is, the less likely it is that the driver uses the indicator.

So that's your explanation right there: old cars (probably bought used) are comparatively cheap. So people use the indicator. New, modern cars of the type with lots of electronics and fancy designs are expensive. So the drivers tend to feel entitled to behave like assholes. And not using the indicator (except for tailgating) is a requirement for being a traffic-asshole.
im happy if the car just has on/off switch for the headlights. getting in my mates car is a lesson in patience with switches for on/off/daylight on/bright/autodimmingon/autodimmingbright/fog/targetedon/autotargetingon/off............................all with their own indecipherable symbol

seriously, wtf

i wont even start to list the options for interior lights, that takes a whole new manual

My wife bridges the gap by hitting the indicator after she's turned the wheel, often after the tires have crossed the line. Makes me nuts. It's the difference between asking for permission to move over, and saying "Get out de way! I'ma comin'!"

Doesn't help that I'm not at all a good passenger, because I absolutely KNOW that nobody drives as well as I do. ; ) But seriously, my brother tailgates badly and shifts really late (for no good reason), mom brakes late - even in winter, and the wife signals late and has these other habits that make me want to open her door and shove her out so I can slide over and drive the right way.

See post 25.

Interesting some people have not seen this crap? Possibly some other countries are smart enough to stop this crap coming into their country?

90% of newer cars in Australia have these bubbly glass indicators. Some work better than others, but pretty much all of them fail when the sun gets on it at the right angle. This simply does not happen with old orange indicator lights.

However, there is one flaw with the old orange indicator lights..... i have seen some situations where a car driving past a line of trees will appear to be indicating, but not, its just the sun flashing between the trees! LOL.... these new indicators wont do that.
I noticed the "red" signals for the first time today, on a RAM pickup, so yeah, US made.
