TwinS4ever: The Shawshank Redemption.
It's Nr. 1 on IMDb's Top 250 list for a reason.
I love that movie :)
For action adventure I would say Mad Max 2.

If "movies spun off TV series" qualify, Madoka Magica: Rebellion. Everytime I watch it, my impression of it improves even further--but you do need to have watched the original series, preferably more than once, to understand its plot and significance, otherwise it'd appear as nothing but a disjointed series of bad trips and cheap angst.

If not that, then probably Black Hawk Down. Not only is the story gripping, the photography is absurdly beautiful, camera work is exceptional, acting is superb, and the storyline is just about the least judgemental of all war movies I've seen, one of the few which I feel can be enjoyed just the same regardless of your position on the necessity of war.
For movies with dragons I nominate Reign of Fire, starring Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale, Gerard Butler, and the loveliness of Izabella Scorupco.

Damn fine and unique movie.

I rewatched it recently and I have to say Willow is really pretty fun. Definately better than I remembered. It also made me realise how odd it is it took so long for Ron Howard to direct a Star Wars movie, and when it did finally happen it's only as a last second replacement for a meagre spin-off.

Anyway, since we're on the subject of dragons, personaly I have a soft spot for Dragonheart. I always loved this scene.

Have you seen Dragon Slayer?

it tends to get overlooked because it's not as "glamorous" as other movies. The hero isn't some good looking beefcake and the heroine isn't some jaw dropping beauty, but that's part of what makes it good. It's dirty. It's bare bones. Yet the dragon effects are jaw dropping.

Oh yes, I really liked it. The visuals are great, and the whole thing had a lot of unexpected welcome twists and a great, dark tone. But I remember the ending felt out of place and kinda contrdicted the themes of the movie up to that point. Still, it was overall very good.
El Cid, 60s Charlton Heston.
My favorite movie, the one I saw in theater in 1983 and that I have watched many times and will watch if I catch it on tv even if it is half over or something is The Right Stuff.
The Vikings (1958)
GREAT MOVIE!
