It depends on the theme do the game. Large scale battles are best as an RTS, like StarCraft, WarCraft or Command & Conquer. I recently picked up Impossible creatures and am enjoying that as well. However when it comes to squad based tactical games, especially RPGs, the it's turn based all the way. I can't stand real time tactical squad based games. The AI will never do exactly what I want it to and it's impossible to watch every squad member at once. This becomes more of a problem when there are RPG elements and I can level up my squad members and their weapons. In a turn based game I can watch each character and decide if they are being effective or not in combat. I can then adjust weapons or tactics as needed, with real time games it's just too hectic to make those kinds of decisions. If a unit dies in a traditional RTS it can be replaced by one exactly like it, but in a real time squad game each of the squad members are unique and loosing one can have a detrimental impact on the game. Why did that guy die? I don't know because I was paying attention to another character at the time. And if it's real time with pause, ugh forget it. That's just taking the worst of both systems.
