Up to 70% off Crimzon Clover, Raiden series, Raptor: Call of Shadows and more!

PEW. PEW PEW. PEW. BWOOM! PEW PEW. BWOOOOM!
Is that confetti? No, it's a sea of bullets! It's a sea of flashing death-balls, missiles, laser beams and god-knows-whats coming right at you from every possible direction. You're surrounded by your impending doom - it'd be morbid if it wasn't so spectacular. Weekly Staff Picks: SHMUPS is that time of the week when we assault you with up to 70% off on some of the deadliest spectacles around.

The top three Crimzon Clover: World Ignition reviews call it "The BEST indie shmup on the PC", "Best shmup on PC" and a "Fine shmup". Are you feeling it yet? Go look at those screenshots, come back, did you see a game underneath all the SHMUP? Probably not, but that's the point we're making here - there is no shame in flying blind.
For a look at what lies behind the SHMUP historically, check out Raiden III. It leaves the insanity of bullet hell for the new kids on the block, opting for a modern, smooth, and precise experience with a classic formula. A revival of the classic Raiden series, and a "Fine shmup" in its own right.

SHMUP 'em all up with up to 70% off on Raiden Legacy, Raptor: Call of Shadows, and Humans Must Answer in Weekly Staff Picks: SHMUPS. The promo will last until Thursday, February 12, at 10:59 AM GMT.

Weekly Staff Picks on Twitch
Come down with us to the depths of bullet hell! MegaPiemanHD is taking on Raiden III in his Weekly Staff Picks Spotlight tonight! That's Monday, January 9, at 7:00 PM GMT / 2:00 PM EST / 11:00 AM PST on Twitch.tv/gogcom.

RyaReisender: I like shmups, but the ones on GoG I either already have played or don't really like.

I kind of loved horizontal shmups, but ever since Thunder Force IV it feels like nothing really great was released in that genre (well okay, Gradius V was nice).

tokisto: Best horizontal shmups ever (really, and free): Hydorah - http://www.locomalito.com/hydorah.php
Thunder Force is better imo. Hydorah is a bit too Gradius-like but it's actually better than Gradius (except Gradius V).

Looks pretty good and you can't argue with free. :-) I think I'm going to give it a spin, too.

But best ever? If we look back at classics there is for example Prototype.

By today's standards the gameplay from Prototype (not the open world game from 2009, I'm talking about the horizontal shmup from 1995) might seem a little dated but the difficulty curve was just right, quickly switching weapons to best suit the opponents was fun, the graphics were good for the time and it had a killer soundtrack (CD-Audio) that kept your blood pumping. I still listen to that soundtrack today.

And if we take today's games into consideration it has to measure up to games like Beat Hazard Ultra, Syder Arcade, Astebreed or Ring Runner. And we haven't even started to talk about the top-down scrolling games like the Raiden or Crimzon Clover series yet...
Yeah, Hydorah is worth giving a try, but it's has the Gradius-style. You only have very few "bullets" you can shoot at the same time and when you die you have to restart at the last check point. It's super hard.

I prefer rapid fire and being able to switch weapon types.

There's your answer, pal.
13. Got it?! :P
How are the Crimzon Clover and Humans Must Answer games?

I think you're an asker, man :P
Asking "how's this one, how's that one"; always cautious about purchases?
If so, wish I was like ya :)

Crimzon Clover is the best shump on pc. Frenetic, fun.
'Nuff said. :D

Enebias: Raptor: Call of Shadows is one of the very first games I tried back in the first half of the 90's (my uncle had a copy), yet I was way to young to have even the slightest chance to be a decent player! :P

I would like to try it again, yet I read that this is not the original DOS version but an apparently awful port. Is that true?

Grargar: It's not the original DOSBox version; that one is only available to purchase via the 3D Realms site. As for this version, there is, apparently, a fair share of problems with it.
I didn't know the version on the 3D Realms site was the DOS version, that's good to know. Much thanks for the info.

Yeah, I guess I do ask a lot of questions about games--especially about windowed mode! :P

Crimzon Clover does look like a lot of fun! I also wonder if that Raiden III is any good.
Can I just note once again how aggravating it is I can no longer click on the game to get more information about it?

Another bizarre design choice that strips away functionality and makes the site decidedly more user-unfriendly.
Do not buy the Humans Must Answer. Game works but its dreadful - bought it during a insomnia sale and i must sale easily one of the worst games ive bought on GOG :( .Buy Crimzon Clover or Raiden III instead.
TINY AND BIG: GRANDPA'S LEFTOVERS is also discounted on gog by 90% and its not in any promo. Just thought to point this out here so that people can use gog's offer while it lasts.

Yeah, why is Humans Must Answer so bad?
Please, tell me, what's the best of these titles? Want to buy only one of them, because SW Humble Bundle stolen my wallet :(
I will say that I don't like how slow the ship is in HMA. The game is quite crazy hard to do stuff because a lot of 100% completions are required to progress to next parts.
