Acquire your taste for the jRPG.

It’s the second edition of our brand new promo format, the Weekly Staff Picks. This time around we’ve decided to highlight a pretty new, but extremely welcome, addition to the GOG.com catalogue: jRPGs. They say the genre is an acquired taste, and it looks like many of the GOG staff have it - well now it’s your turn with our Japanese Roleplay. Three noteworthy titles of the Japanese persuasion will be discounted up to 75% in this fantastic deal lasting until Thursday, January 15, at 10:59AM GMT.

Agarest: Generations of War - Collector’s Edition, also known as Record of Agarest War, is an absolutely unique storytelling concept in games: the story of Agarest spans a lengthy five generations of protagonists. The game’s Soul Breed system gives you the opportunity to influence each future generation of fighters as your offspring inherits the best of what you, and the partner of your choice, have to offer. There is no better time to check out this outstanding game than now, for a whopping 75% off.

Though Japanese in spirit only, Pier Solar and the Great Architects is quite literally a modern classic and currently available 50% off. Originally developed for the Sega Genesis, you’d think it was the oldest of our three promo titles. In reality, the game was released in 2010 on the long forgotten system and successful enough that it was eventually ported (and remastered) to nearly every modern gaming platform you can think of, including Windows, Mac and Linux. Pier Solar and the Great Architects is still an oldie at heart, and with the HD remake available on GOG.com you can even pick between a fresh new coat of paint and the original pixely goodness.

Finally The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky at a -30% discount, is one highly-rated piece of a well known RPG series which started out as early as 1989. Trails in the Sky, is just a small portion of the extensive, six chapter, Legend of Heroes saga. This one is a must-have for all jRPG fans on GOG.com.

These three unique titles are a great start for anybody looking to get into jRPGs, and must-haves for fans already among us. The Japanese Roleplay Weekly Staff Pick will last until Thursday, January 15, at 10:59AM GMT. If you missed the news last week, The Weekly Staff Picks are replacing the Monday and Wednesday Gem Promos, bringing you more discounted games each week and more time to pick your favorites.

timppu: What's with GOG offering for Agarest all these:

Collector's Edition
Vanilla version
Collector's Edition upgrade

I presume buying the first one makes the other two obsolete?
avatar
Grargar: The first one is a bundle containing the two last ones.
I figured so, but wanted a confirmation because it offers you to buy all three. I wish the system was a bit smarter and would not offer obsolete versions. At least it had selected all three for me by default, as if it was a good idea to buy them all.

I recall seeing some similar mess up with e.g. Sword of the Stars, where it keeps offering me the Gold Edition, even though I have the original + Gold Edition Upgrade already. GOG doesn't yet handle these different editions of the same game that well, the user has to be aware all the time what he has and what is obsolete for him.

I hope this doesn't become an issue with e.g. those increasing promos where you get the full discount only if you buy all the items (minus those you already have), and the only way to achieve that is to buy obsolete versions (e.g. vanilla version + Gold Edition Upgrade + full Gold Edition).

There was a funny Risen promo, where if you didn't have any Risen game, you could actually get Risen plus its DLC cheaper than if you bought the complete version, because with any two products you had a 70% discount, but with one you had a 60% discount.
Interesting selection, but not the best promo (IMO).
I'll wait a bit longer, but it's nice that these games get a bit more time in the spotlight.
Good promo . Passing .
While I actually really DO like JRPGs, the only really good one that GoG offers is Trails in the Sky which I already own.

Pier Solar is OK, but has several problems and imo is better played on a console.

Agarest is just... really bad. Yeah you have good music, a cool battle system and hot half-naked anime chicks (if you are into that), but the remaining gameplay is just so horrible, I don't understand how some people managed to endure playing it longer than a few hours.

If GoG wants to offer some good JRPGs they should go for the Sega classics like Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force.

I own Agarest, it looked great but when playing the low framerate (30) and horrible interface just completely turned me off.

What problems does Pier Solar have?

Matruchus: Interesting promo but not even one of these games even remotely interests me.
Uh... interesting.

^ This.
Got Pier Solar, thanks ;)
Well, as I've played Pier Solar and Trails I can vouch for the both of them. Definitely get Trails, and if you really like random battles and exploring for extra trezur don't feel bad if you get Pier.

Vythonaut: Having said that, "Trails in the Sky" seems to be interesting enough but i have a feeling that i won't get to see the finish - 50 hours of jRPG gameplay, seems a little frightening to me.. I'll wait for a better discount on that, if i'm about to - at least - try it.

Nonetheless, it's a great WSP promo! :-)
I've never really been a fan of JRPG combat, but "Trails" is such a good game I didn't even mind the combat system. The combat system actually gets a little better as you progress, plus almost all random fights can outright be avoided. It didn't feel "grindy" to me either.

What problems does Pier Solar have?
I have Pier Solar on PS3, for me the main problems are:

1. HD graphics implementation is really bad, you can hardly see where you can walk, some NPC and treasure chests get completely obscured by trees or other stuff that would actually be clearly visible in the original, everything is much darker on HD so you have to increase brightness of your TV to even see enough to play it properly. Also 16-bit sprites on HD background just doesn't look good in this game because the pixel size is just toooo big on the character sprites.
At least you can switch back to 16-bit graphics. It was the only solution for me, even though I miss out of the better drawn stuff.

2. The dungeons lack variety in combat. There are too few different monsters and every encounter has the same combination of monster (though the amount is randomized). Sometimes even multiple dungeons in row have the exactly same encounter sets, no new monsters at all.

3. Combat gameplay is completely broken. Getting better equip or leveling up seems to have no effect on your damage at all. Sometimes, I level up or equip a better weapon and end up dealing less damage than before? There must be some really obscure damage calculations going on there, maybe damage is completely fixed depending on the attack you use and stats have no effect on it at all. Or maybe monsters scale with you?
Also the monster AI just doesn't work correctly. For example there is a monster and an NPC even tells you about it. It is supposed to hide in the sand and then it is supposed to counter all your attacks. The NPC tells you to just wait since it can't stay in the sand for a long time and has to come out eventually.
In reality, this doesn't work at all: The monsters stays in the same FOREVER if you just wait. You can wait 10+ turns and it still stays in the sand waiting to counter your attack. Only after it countered, it will actually get out of the sand. And often it looks like the monster is not in the sand but it will still counter all your attacks. It's making any kind of strategy void.

The rest of the game is OK. I'm still enjoying it, unlike Agarest which was just pure frustration.
It's good to see some JRPG love around these parts, particularly from persons of influence such as the GOG staffers. If these initial titles do well I hope it means affirmative potential for more Japanese titles to come.

I've had my eye on a DRM-Free version of Recettear: An Item shop's Tale for a while now, and have been tempted to pick it up from GamersGate where it is still offered DRM-Free (at least outside of Japan). I'm holding out for the next GamersGate sale or for it to come to GOG, whichever event happens first.
