Am I the only one that gets slightly excited when I see orange text in forum posts? :)

eiii: Has anyone tried to play Venom. Codename: Outbreak with Wine?
It doesn't look very promising. Maybe Wine being 2.0 now might have changed something, but I would never take that kind of gamble. Not with that kind of track record, anyway. *shrug*

For those who use Linux and may still hesitate - I've just finished tutorial missions of Cossacks: European Wars (part of nicely discounted Cossacks Anthology pack) and it seems to work like a charm under Wine, just out-of-the-box, without any additional configuration. I'm using Wine v.1.8 (on Linux Mint 18 Sarah 64-bit with MATE desktop).

From what I've checked on the Internet before, American Conquest uses exactly the same engine (the same tricks was recommended before to make both games work) and I suppose it'll also work properly with new Wine (1.8+).

Both games also run very well for me under Wine 1.8, without any tweaks. I've already played several hours and haven't had any problems so far. There's also a report for Cossacks in the Wine thread.

FYI, the linked bug 19888, comment 44 (posted a few days agao) has a patch that fixes the black screen. For the menu at least. Not sure if it works for the whole game.

Painted_Doll: Is it playable with kb and mouse ?
I haven't tried it with KB/M, but it's an all digital affair so I can't see that being a problem. Also sorry for the late reply as I missed your comment earlier.

I've seen that bug report too. But as I've checked it the patch hasn't been posted. Thanks for the info! I'm too late for the sale now and haven't compiled Wine in a while, so I probably delay that test until the next sale.

I've tried the Venom demo with a workaround also given in that bug report (UseVideoTextures=0). It kind of works. The game starts properly. In the briefing screen the mouse cursor disappears so that it's hard to start a mission, but it's doable. The frame rate on my old system (which can handle Clear Sky without problems) is rather low and the graphics is pixelated and itchy (not sure if that's the right word to describe it), which may be caused by the UseVideoTextures setting. But the worst is the delayed keyboard input (by almost a second), which kills the fun. On top of it the demo crashes quite often with an access violation error.
