Nothing like the risk of starting the game from scratch can make you climb to the top of your abilities. That’s why this Weekend Sale on GOG.COM is full of DRM-free titles in which the main character lives (and dies) only once. Here are some great examples:

Darkest Dungeon (-75%) is a challenging gothic roguelike turn-based RPG in which you recruit, train, and lead a team of flawed heroes through the dark and twisted environment.

Monstrum (-80%) is a survival horror game that will force you to use your wits and whatever tools you can find to outrun or outsmart a dangerous pursuer.

StarCrawlers (-90%) is a sci-fi RPG where you must wage strategic battles against futuristic enemies with an innovative time unit turn-based combat system.

Check out more games that will keep you on the edge of your seat! The latest Weekend Sale on GOG.COM will end on 24th August 2020, 1 PM UTC.

takezodunmer2005: Starcrawlers isn't as much of a game featuring permadeath due to manual saves...

IronArcturus: Is the game any good?
Yes, the atmosphere is decent, yet sometimes the RNG can be an ass, and making money can be a bitch, but then again I'm pretty early in the game.

eiii: At least in Starcrawlers permadeath is optional. Are there other games in this promo where you can switch off permadeath?
Yes, Songbringer allows for saves and Tangledeep allows you to turn off permadeath when you start a new game

Lesser Blight Elemental: So, Darkest Dungeon. One thing I keep reading about it is that it has a killer difficulty spike that ends up trashing a lot of people's playthrough. Is it true?
totally
it is not really the difficulty that kills your champs but random bad luck
dont play it , it is just time waste

It is! Give it a go, as with GoG's generous refund policy, you've got nothing to lose!

Thanks for the answers! So there are at least a few interesting games for me in this promo. :)

Edit:
Tangledeep looks interesting. Songbringer, although having Linux support, unfortunately is ruined for me by bad and messy graphics.

I’ve seen that written here and there, but would fully disagree. The difficulty is really well-balanced, but I think some players have difficulties accepting that some dungeon raids are going to be failed.

I even managed to go through the final dungeon using an unoptimized party (I only wanted to show the game to someone, did not plan to actually win it during this session), despite almost never playing dungeon crawlers. If I can win a game, it can not be a very difficult one ;)

If failure is not something your are comfortable with you might not like this game, as it is all about failures and how to deal with them. But it is actually a great dungeon crawler that manages to give a good paint of the horrors lurking below…

Yeah, songbringer does have shitty pixel art, I suppose they were trying to be stylized, however it does not work at all! But the gameplay is very zelda-like, so you'll have to play for a bit in order to get used to the horribly pixelated graphics while focusing on the gameplay...

Re:Starcrawlers

Side missions and selling items you do not need anymore will help.

It is all about making the best of bad situations. In the gameplay and as a theme in the game. If the player is not disheartened by adversity and adapts, there is enjoyment to be found.

That said, the devs included a more flexible game mode that is more forgiving (for those who would prefer a bit less punishment).

A question: anyone played Massive Chalice? Did you enjoy it?

Personally, I did not like the lack of customization options. You are stuck with the Houses that people created in the kickstarter... of which some are okay, and many, downright idiotic. The decision to lock the game to those houses alone, and not allowing the player to create their own... It did not help the kickstarter that much, while detracts from the final game. A lesson for people making kickstarters... offer something to your backers, but not at the expense of future customers.

Niggles: What is Starcrawlers like right now? (was interested when i heard first it was a scifi turn based rpg...)
Dunno about now, but I played it at launch and it found it be thoroughly boring. Combat is very simple and the algorithim they use to generate random maps must be limited as all the maps felt the same.

They added hacking, with optional hacking side missions.

The types of locations IIRC were offices, starships, mines, and so on. Maybe they added more. Many missions were in offices, though. Whenever the setting was different, it was nice. Starships were interesting.

Plot missions and feature side misions were definitely more interesting than generic ("grinding") optional misssions.

Many changes have been happening, so maybe they fixed the main problem of the game: protracted combats that made a chore to progress. Eventually you avoided combat not out of fear but because of how long (and eventually boring) non-boss combat was. Instead of figthing trash mobs like in, say, Final Fantasy, where they can effectively erode your party but the combat is short, leaving the longer fights to bosses and mini-bosses.

If they fixed that, then the rest of the game would be very nice.
