Leroux: Has anyone played the War Wind games? I don't usually get along that well with strategy games, they're too abstract, too complicated, too long, tedious or stressful for my liking.
According to the reviews of those games on Gog and elsewhere.. they don't seem good for you at all.
It seems that both controls and UI are terrible and that the games require a lot of tedious micromanagement.
I'm curious about these titles, however, so I'm checking some videos on Youtube.

kai2: How good are the Hand of Fate games? I haven't played a fantasy card game since Magic The Gathering released in '93, but I enjoyed it then. I do enjoy combat RPGs quite a lot. It's strange how the price of these indie games have stayed relatively high for so long.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
I haven't played the second one as it's still too expensive for my taste, but the first one is good. It's not really comparable to trading card games like Magic the Gathering though, as the combat encounters are all played out as 3D third person real-time action, they are not that tactical but require you to dodge, roll and hack and slash yourself. The card decks are the base for laying out a rogue-like "dungeon" map of events and encounters: Each dungeon level you get some of them spread out face down, displaying where you can move and then when you step on a card, the event is revealed. Most of the cards are text-based, Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style events, you can gain items or gold by risking something or lose health or achieve other negative results if you're unlucky. Some cards are shops. And some cards lead to 3D combats or shorter 3D arcade or puzzle dungeons.

Among all these cards you need to find the exit to the next level, and you need to survive through a couple of levels and beat the final boss to complete a section of the game. In the process you can gain new cards, and before each run you can build your own deck from which the cards will be drawn during a run, but there are rules for it, so e.g. you can't just leave out all the monster cards and risky events. It's a quite unique concept, and it can be lots of fun. If that sounds somewhat appealing to you, I recommend getting the first game to see what it's like.

Leroux:
Thanks! Yeah, definitely intrigued... but the price on these games has seemed prohibitive for a test drive. I've almost lost the will to play the games! But, I'll probably take the plunge on the first one.

worldoffizz: Wizardry 6-8, which I already own, makes me wish GOG could get Wizardry 1-5 in the store.
I don't think I'd ever complete it, but I'd gladly take it into my GOG library, for sure.

Thank you, phaolo, I was asking myself exactly the same questions Leroux asked above.

tfishell: Heh, I actually have three of these games, but none of them interest me. SOMA must have been given away at some point, I know Fantasy General was, and I did Connect Amnesia because, hey, another game in my library.
Hear, hear. I don't think I ever saw a promo less aligned with my tastes. I have exactly two games and only because both were given for free, exactly the same games you do, sans Amnesia. Yes SOMA was indeed free according to my order history and I wouldn't have bought otherwise.

With some effort I could maybe kinda someday play those War Winds, except that I would rather play a dozen other RTSs before them. So I have zero interest in this promo. Which is a good thing when I remember I should save more money.

eiii: But judging from GOG's screnshots is it even darker in A Machine For Pigs?
avatar
TheMonkofDestiny: No. Something to remember is that a big gimmick in The Dark Descent centered around Daniel being nyctophobic but Mandus doesn't suffer from it in A Machine for Pigs. Some areas are dark but you've also got a lantern that doesn't rely on oil to stay lit.
Thanks! I'll have a closer look at it.
