70-75% off Total Annihilation, Men of War, Massive Assault, Blitzkrieg and more.

"A military operation involves deception. Even though you are competent, appear to be incompetent. Though effective, appear to be ineffective." "Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look on them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death." These, and many others, are words that you will live by when engaging this weekend's collection of some of the greatest, most varied strategy titles on GOG.com. It's our DRM-free StrataGems at 70-75% off!

Total Annihilation is one of the most historical RTSes ever to be released, standing toe to toe with other legends of the genre. It's a game that back in 1997 introduced a scale so massive that few games manage to replicate it to this day. Faces of War and the Men of War series will teach you about the unbreakable bonds of war. Instead of massive number-based battles, you'll be controlling a relatively small squad of soldiers - each one simulated in detail, even allowing you to take direct control for the more precise maneuvers. And then there's Massive Assault, a game of turn-based tactics and true deception from the creators of World of Tanks. In this game, your success will not depend on your reaction time or clicks per minute, you will never go into battle uncertain of its outcome. Everything is consistent and laid out on the table from the start. The question is, how will you play your cards?

Plan, deceive and strategize in this weekend's promo: StrataGems! With over 30 games at 70-75% off, you can truly earn your place among the greatest generals in the history of mankind. The promo will last until Tuesday, August 4, 3:59 AM GMT.

zeffyr: I played both Phase 1&2 of Codename: Panzers (awesome games, Phase 2 still rocks!) and I have to say that CoH games are more complex and give more options tactic-wise. So, does MoW focus more on micromanagement of units then on macromanagement of a whole army?
Very much on the micromanagement side of things, every unit has it's own inventory and ammo supply. The amounts are generally well judged though, so when you're fighting large battles there's no repetitive constant resupply but there are sufficient shortages that you sometimes have to make decisions about when to use a tank or which weapon to pick up when behind enemy lines.

IronArcturus: How are the Massive Assault games? Do they have windowed mode?
avatar
Licurg: I remember the first one does .
Do you know what the difference is between Galactic Assault and Massive Assault?

Never played Galactic Assault. Up until recently , I didn't even know it existed, or that it was connected to Massive Assault.
Thanks to the promo, my Men of War and Massive Assault series are now complete.

Would consider more, but there's nothing left to grab.

What the hell, GOG? When are you going to start running two large sales every weekend instead of just the one? ;)

Licurg: For anybody wondering - Eador : Masters of a Broken World is fixed . No more crashes, nothing, it's a solid stable game now .
But is it really worth the money or should we stick to Eador Genesis with the New Horizons mod ? ( fancy graphics isn't everything )

I haven't tried the New Horizons mod, because I've been playing MoaBW since I got it . I think it's worth it, especially for the promo price .

Leevi: I'm boycotting Russian economy. Hopefully when this offer comes again the Russian people have a saner leadership.
avatar
igrok: This is ridiculous, especially because some of the developers are not even Russian.
There are 31 games on this sale, almost all have either Russian publisher or developer. Only 4 games seem to be non-Russian (Total Annihilation and Massive Assault games).

It's not exactly the same game "logic". I have only quickly tried Galactic Assault for now, but have finished Massive Assault and played Massive Assault Phantom Renaissance. Of the three, the best is MA PR. It is an improvement of MA, and if you want one of this two, I strongly recommend MA PR (which is very enjoyable). And for what I read and played, MA PR is my favorite compared to GA. In GA, they took away the "territory" system which was one of the big strong point of the MA serie, and felt that GA was less "dynamic" (and there are some other changes that I didn't really liked but I may change my mind about all of this when I'll be able to play it more ;)).

So in the 3, I personally would suggest to buy MA PR !
I'll try to take a look to see if it has a windowed mode ;)

Edit : MA and MA PR have both a windowed mode !

Lemonjack: So I already have both Blitzkrieg and Total Annihilation games, and Perimeter as well. Anything else good among the rest?

I definitely want Silent Storm, but was also looking at one of the Massive Assault games, and possibly one of the Men of War series. How are the Etherlords games, Space Rangers, and Soldiers: Heroes of WWII? I prefer turn-based to real-time strategy, as I do not care for overly twitchy games, because I am not a Korean Starcraft player..
I strongly suggest S2 Silent Storm.
If you like TBS...
Massive Assault Phantom Renaissance is very pleasant and interesting.
Etherlords 2 too (it's in a (good) way like the card game "Magic").
And I strongly recommend to take a look at Fantasy Wars too ;)

I can definitely recommend Eador. Genesis if you're looking for a classic TBS game :) It's got enough content to keep you busy for hours and hours :) Just exploring various hexes will take you quite a long time :)

Thank you very much for the detailed info :-)
Own the games in this promo, would be nice if we could get more RTS/Tactical games here on GOG.

How about GOG buy the rights to the WarWind series? =D

HunchBluntley: That's one off the wishlist. Only 30 more to go!
Just thirty on the wishlist? I have over 140 titles on my wishlist! Sometimes I think my 'it's on sale' purchasing addiction is more for the collection than actual gaming. I did the same thing with boardgames, but hey, at least digital download games don't take up any physical space. =)

Anyway, I ended up buying Etherlords 2, the original Men of War, and Soldiers: Heroes of World War II. For less than $2 USD each, I figure I can take a chance on them. If I end up liking Men of War, I will buy more games in the series sometime in the future.

I still want Silent Storm, but it's been cheaper in the past (I recommend IsThereAnyDeal.com for checking such things), so I'll wait for Black Friday in November and hope it drops to 80% off or more.

EDIT: Just picked up Eador: Genesis too. Not much information about it, but it has a lot of positive reviews from GOG users, so for $1.50 I'll give it a go.

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Yeah, I'm very good at talking myself out of buying stuff. :P I only buy or wishlist games that I would actually want to play, and there are even some currently on my wishlist that I'll probably never get. But this one I'm actually mildly excited to play! (I'll probably get slaughtered, though.)

Yeah, I noticed that line too -- I had to re-read the sentence to make sure I actually read the name of the game correctly. "Historical" would not be the first word I would use to describe a sci-fi RTS game. =D
