Help us break the GOG Galaxy servers!

Our venture into GOG Galaxy started not too long ago, so far our infrastructure supports online multiplayer for Aliens vs Predator Classic 2000, Double Dragon Trilogy and of course The Witcher Adventure Game. It's been pretty smooth sailing, but there is still so much ahead of us. We want to learn everything we can about our infrastructure under a lot of stress, how much we can handle before weird stuff starts to happen. That means plenty of people doing all kinds of things at once - rolling dice, beating up baddies, killing aliens.

We're going to be hanging out in-game, and we'd like you to join us in trying to break our servers.

-We want to throw everything we can at our infrastructure. We'd like you to help us break it on Thursday, February 12 starting at 4:00 PM GMT. No worries if you're late, we'll be at it for a while. You can check your local time right here!

-Simply launch your GOG.com copy of Aliens vs Predator Classic 2000, Double Dragon Trilogy, The Witcher Adventure Game, join an existing multiplayer game or create your own, and have a good time! We'll be there too.

Once you've had a chance to play, let us know how your online experience went, and what we can do to improve it (keep in mind we're not testing the games themselves, but the online infrastructure). You can vent, praise, and anything in between, right here in this forum thread. We'll be watching!

Thank you!

skinandbones13: 1) GOG already is account based, you have to sign up and provide information to purchase and download your games.

Pheace: Very true, but after you've dealth with that, you never need to deal with, nor depend on them or their service again. That's the part most consider DRM-Free. Not so for GOG Galaxy Multiplayer.

Until you buy another game and have to log-in again. ;P

2) I don't understand the "de-futurproofing"; If Galaxy collapsed it would revert back to it's current state where the multiplayer component on games distributed by GOG aren't functional. This would be the case if GOG itself imploded, the games are still able to be backed up and playable (which I thought one of the major points of DRM-free).

Pheace: I'm not anti-online, however there are ways of doing online that do not require an account, nor a 3rd party service. Whether those are more ideal or not is debatable (particularly for cheating/hacking). However, those would be the closest you can get to DRM-free, ie not being dependant on, nor at the whim of a 3rd party service, which is basically what DRM-free is about. Including LAN/Direct connect would guarantee that even if the Online service went down, people could still multiplayer together. Without it, you're dependant on the 3rd party service to even let you play your multiplayer.

And yes, as I said, there's a good chance otherwise the game would still be using a similar service from a competitor and we wouldn't be better off because of it. But that doesn't change the fact that the inherent online matchmaking is something that makes part of the game dependant on the account based service and *will* eventually be discontinued, leaving the game without that option. IE it's not futureproof. The inclusion of LAN/Direct connect would make sure those games could still be enjoyed (almost) fully.
I didn't mean to accuse of being anti-online, and I can see from your replies that you are not but it was just the "feels" i get by some of the comments on the forum who are totally against an online client.

I know what you mean by the argument about a third party client. Say if GOG started selling games that a major component was online or even wholly online, this could definitely be a problem.

I still think DRM is about copyright restrictions on games; you have to be logged in to a third party client to be able to play the game or the game files being accessed through the cloud. Where as Galaxy seems to be an optional third party client that enables multiplayer function on some games.
Sorry in advance if I'm wrong, but i hear this talk about tcp/ip or w/e when it comes to online play. However, isn't this something dependant on the developer instead?
Hmm.. I never got as far as playing AvP online - couldn't figure out how to actually play it/get anywhere..

But, a red-shirt is always welcome, right? Someone to mop the blood off the floor with afterwards?

Guys chill out.
Try to install the AVP 2000 classic gog version.
There's an option to log in or to continue offline....
Noone forces anyone to do anything online!
Can't help you with that, GOG - but once you decide to test autoupdate/games/extras download feature - I'll join stress test :-D
¿How do I stress test Galaxy? I do not have it installed, and when I downloaded AVP Classic it didn't came with any "galaxy" software, nor does the multiplayer option inside the game works.

I had access to galaxy beta, but I formatted my computer and I lost the files of Witcher Adventure Game and Galaxy. What should I do?
I played the Witcher game online yesterday, but only one match (~2 hours) and the opponent left early, I didn't get to pick Gerald which left me with Triss and no clue on how she works.
All the development she has are kind of healing yourself from wounds or pick more fortune cards, but you cannot actual kill anything -.-

Irrespective of whether there is an option *after* installation not to join their client system, software that I a) do not want, b) do not need, is being installed on my system *without* option. I don't care in the least about multiplayer, but I understand that others do. I have no problem with their being this "Galaxy" client, just separate it from the games as currently I am unable to buy Witcher AG, DD, and AVP purely because they include this software is installed without option (and I had WAG pre-ordered!). This is the exact same reason as I haven't played a lot of the new games out as in most cases they *require* a client to be installed.

There is also a issue with privacy, and you can go on about how GOG wouldn't do x, y, z, it doesn't matter to me. I have zero trust in anyone or anything, so even having something installed would mean disconnecting internet each run, having tracking software in the background to ensure nothing malicious is occurring etc. So again, this software should be a completely optional separate download.

Small correction. It's not the client that's installed, it's the framework. Similar to how .NET, .XNA, DirectX or PhysX is installed along with some games. The client is not included with any of the games so far.

Only played the beta, but am gonna give the game a spin today to reach the noble goal of breaking the servers...
From the beta I remember her having some kick-ass spells and being a really strong character...
Well, best do some single player to get a grip again. So great that today is my day off :)
