lolplatypus: I'm reasonably sure the creators of Ulysses 31 were permastoned.
They just relocated Homer's Odyssey from mythological Greece to 31st century deep space?

Pretty much. With some child-friendly comic relief robots that afair had no equivalent in the source material. I vaguely remember some "2001 was successfull, we should shrooms, too!" sequences towards the end, as well. It went a bit off the rails - at least I don't recall the original Ulysses actually meeting the gods in person. Also, lightsabers. Because why not.

With a short incursion in Ancient Greece, for one episode where the 31st century Ulysses meets his ancestor (a perfect lookalike, whose son, also named Telemachus, is a perfect lookalike to the 31st century Telemachus - don't ask me how it works when we're not high).

Awesome series though. One of the few that retained my respect when I rediscovered it. And that music, damn.

Matewis: I'm marking this a question since one of the two greatest mysteries I have yet to solve is what some vague memories of such a cartoon I saw 20+ years ago comes from. I don't think it was anime at all, and it showed inbetween other 'normal' cartoons like Moomin. But that's all I've got apart from it being weird, trippy and kinda dark/gloomy.
Do you remember the channel? If so, you can probably dig up a vintage TV guide with a bit of Googling.

No, but there was only 4 channels back then, so yes, If I can get my hands on some tv guides from +- 1992-1996 then I might be able to find it. Have no clue where to find any though :P Perhaps at a 2nd hand book stall at a flea market .

I meant you could probably find it online. Even if you can't find an old TV schedule, at the very least you'll probably find a forum thread or Facebook group talking about old South African children's TV.
I think I've mentioned this before, but the Tom and Jerry, Czechoslovakia produced cartoons, what is known as the Gene Deitch era(1961–62), gave me nightmares. Wiki details it best as to why:
"The soundtracks featured sparse and echoic electronic music, futuristic sound effects, heavy reverb, and dialogue that was mumbled rather than spoken"

I can't find a good example, but here's just an example, where you can get an idea.

In fact, to this day, the only dreams that still startle me, are ones where everybody talks normally, but then somebody addresses me, and their voice has a weird echo.

Sure, I've already looked around a little bit online but couldn't find anything. But yes that's a good idea, I will look for some active local forums and ask there as well.
Come now, none of those are dark. Though I guess Highlander was trippy, especially if you know the original and try to somehow connect the two :D

vidsgame: I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Courage the Cowardly Dog.

Matewis: Can't believe those shows are nearly 20 years old! Cow and Chicken's first episode was 21 years ago :P
But no, I'm thinking my mystery show was early 90s. I wonder if I can download old tv guides somewhere and just go through all the damn shows
Now I feel really old. I also remember Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls. That Thundarr show really reminds me of Heman.

Darvond: As whacked out as Courage is, it at least follows an internal logic and does often have overarching stories.
It was still trippy in places and a lot of times made no sense to me but now it does because I could draw the comparisons.

Matewis: Sadly not no, we only got a select few episodes over here back then, and as a kid I didn't have access to the channel that showed most of them. Bravestarr luckily enough was one of the shows that showed on one of the normal channels that everyone had.
Galaxy Rangers was shown in SA. I believe it was on an SABC channel back in the late 80's

Probably on TV1 :) But that would've been a few years before I started watching cartoons like that on tv. Earliest would've been around 1991.
Galaxy Rangers looks great nonetheless, but I'm pretty confident that wasn't it.

anothername: Joyful kid movies like Watership Down
LOL yup absolutely this - I still remember the day my Mom rented this for us at the video store thinking it was a cute cuddly rabbit movie... ;) Clearly she wasn't very well read.

Ren and Stimpy was pretty fucked up too.

I actually managed to track down a DVD copy of a REALLY weird one - it's called Wizards. About (I shit you not) neo Nazi goblins squaring off against a magic wizard and a reformed robot. Kind of that cool old school animation style of the late '70s early '80s (like the Lord of the Rings cartoon that I STILL have never seen - have to fix that someday! I did watch The Hobbit one).

Linko90: Cow & Chicken?
Wow, that was Cartoon Network´s Golden Age. Many good cartoons then: 2 Stupid Dogs, Johnny Bravo, etc.
