The RPG classic from 1988 rises from the nuclear ashes! Wasteland Remastered is now available DRM-free on GOG.COM. It brings new life to the title that began the post-apocalypse genre in video games’ history. As the Desert Ranger, you are the only hope left for the people in what was once the American southwest.

falloutttt: I love Atom. I was born in USSR. And playing that game in russian and the whole fallout vibe to it and being in USSR, was like a dream come true.

But once I got to the Dead City, I lost interest. Not sure why, maybe the large amount of mob and slow combat. But that was long time ago, and they updated the game many times since, so I'll get back to it soon enough.

Yeah, I keep my eye on Encased. It looks really good. I have high hopes.

Also there's another game sort of like Fallout. Well, at least the combat part. Check it out, it's a wonderful game, called: Stellar Tactics. It's still in development, but it runs really well, without much bugs or problems. No story there yet tho, so it is a sandbox only atm.

greyhat: I will check out Stellar Tactics. Since it is in development/ early access still I probably would not play it until some sort of story was there or it was complete. But sandbox games can be fun.

Atom really did have a good far Eastern European/ Soviet vibe to it that I really liked. Some of the writing was really good but some of minor NPC writing was repetitious. Asking the same 7 questions over and over again. I understand why because of the budget of the game. The atmosphere and major NPC/plot writing was excellent though.

I wonder....did the writing present it self better in Russian? Maybe something was lost in the English translation!

I will check the game out again at some point. I really liked what they were doing with the game. It was not perfect but definitely nice to see Soviet Fallout. I never quite understood why Russians seem to reference fungus a fair amount in their stories. I think I have encountered it a few times in other Russian media.

Books, movies, etc.

:)

Addendum: Just checked out Stellar Tactics. It looks interesting and the in dev reviews are good. I stuck it in my wishlist for the time being. Thanks for the recommendation. :)
Hey, very welcome friend. Glad you found the game interesting. :)

I can't tell for sure, since I only played the ATOM game in Russian. But I hear, that indeed the English translation isn't very good. At least in comparison. But devs are very nice people, maybe, just guessing here, they may invest in better translation once they made enough money.

Not sure what you mean about fungus. Or maybe me being born in Russia, I don't see what you see and therefor don't understand what you mean. :)

Sorry I should have clarified. There is the Mycelium, or Mushroom, Cult in Krasnoznamenny.

Maybe it has a different meaning in Russian?

I recall seeing greater references to mushrooms in other Russian literature, though not as prevalent as is in Atom, but could be mis remembering. I just thought there might be some greater cultural and historical relevance behind the use of the reference.

I am trying to remember if Road Side Picnic and STALKER (both film and game) have some of those references.

I am probably reading too much into it. But in Atom it is a integral part of the story. Maybe it is a improper translation and they are referring to Mushroom cloud from a nuclear holocaust but translated it to mycellium. :P

Wouldn't that be funny if my little obsession with this was all based on poor Russian to English translations of these games, films, and literature. :D

Interesting observation!

I honestly don't remember alot about the game, it's been almost 2 years since the last time played. But as I remember, I don't think I paid as much attention to the mushrooms. But that doesn't mean you may not be into something there in your way of thinking.

But there's one thing to it tho, whatever you may find unusual, I may find completely and totally normal, as in being from Russia and used the whole idea. And so there's it that.

Also, the fact that you know Road Side Picnic and the STALKER movie, that says quite a lot. And I salute you for that, friend!

Stalker was the most unique movie ever made, in Russia. It is quite a weird one even today. Another one in similar fashion, that you may not know of, but may just be interested in, I think, called "Kin-Dza-Dza".

There was time in Russia, where we had minds capable of thinking outside the box (outside of "ordinary thinking"). Those times are sort of over, at least it seems so, for the time being. But eventually, we'll get back to it... I just know. :)

greyhat: Martian chronicles would be a interesting game if done right. I would like to see a CRPG based on Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.
Well, there is that one Ultima side-game Martian Dreams:

It's great fun so far! Only real complaint is the control scheme. It's kind of like a mish-mash of the old one and something modern, but it takes the worst from both. Best to just implement the old scheme and have onscreen hotkeys for it or do away with all the old stuff and have everything totally point-and-click. Not both, IMO.
