Celestial Orrery? You mean that nonsense doomsday device that's never used because its in the hands of hippies?
Pfft, you new comers don't know the glory of true FTL drives and anti-psyker tech that literally makes filthy witches crap themselves.

Yeah, I don't like 5th ed lore. The only good things are deathmarks and Trazyn the troll.

The new admech army is pretty awesome though. Pity that GW went GW and divided the army into two books, meaning that you have to buy two armies in order to make a proper one.

Anyway, finally tried out the lord.
Yeah, he's strong. Tanky and deals good damage. He's slow though, so escape is not an option.

You do realise though, that the Celestial Orrery can crush, well, Earth, the Emperor, the Sun. With a wave of a finger? It's a good thing we Necrons are responsible beings and don't like a mess!

Yeah, and that's dumb.
If the Necrons could build that, how have they not won yet? Why is there only one? What's the point of building a device that could destroy any star if one has no intention of using it? Isn't that illogical?

So many problems could be solved with that thing. Like the oncoming tyranid invasion.
I recognize its power, but I also recognize terrible writing, that's intended to make necrons the best race ever.

Because of, like I said, responsibility. To quote "Despite this great power, the Royal Court of Thanatos see themselves as gardeners of creation who dispassionately use the Orrery in a precise but sparing manner. They believe in only pruning the galaxy to prevent it from becoming overgrown and wild. However, the power represented by the Celestial Orrery has led to the Oruscar Dynasty waging wars to protect the device from falling into the hands of other Necrons or aliens." Also "the act of destroying a star must be done with careful consideration as it would as it would upset the natural order of the cosmos that could create a critical chain reaction. Through further manipulation, any imbalance can be rectified and returned to proper balance though this can take thousands of years of constant precise micromanagement."
That's not bad writing at all, if you ask me. It's nice fluff.
As for Necrons being the best race ever, well, they are. To quote again "The Necrons are a race of mechanical warriors, created from the Necrontyr. They have lain dormant in their stasis-tombs for sixty million years. They are ancient beyond reckoning, pre-dating even the Eldar."

I'm probably completely wrong on this, but I thought that the Necrons tended to be more methodical and almost defensive. They'll wipe out anything that comes near them, or anything that gets in their way, but won't go out of their way to attack anything that isn't an immediate, present threat (and their damaged 'programming' means that they don't have the initiative to realise that wiping out the Imperium or Tyranids would prevent many future threats).

Or, to put it another way, they're following a plan that was made before Earth was even a thing, and they won't/can't deviate from it enough to wipe out the Solar System... yet.

(But admittedly I don't actually play 40K, and aside from PC games I just pick up bits of the fluff from the occasional novel or browsing TVTropes)
