hi all, I always preferred consoles to the PC, for games, because I find a console controller a million times more intuitive than a PC keyboard. I am thinking to get the GOG Dragon's Age Ultimate package. I played the PC version years ago and liked it, then wanted to play the Prisoner package thing (don't know what it's called) but I gave up because the installation gave me problems.

I have now bought a usb controller for the PC, similar to the ones used on consoles. Would that setup work well with PC rpgs? i.e. do I still need the PC keyboard, or can I access all I need from the controller, such as menus etc? thanks

Some games just won't play well with a controller unless you setup one of the joysticks to work like a mouse cursor. But a mouse is infinitely more precise and responsive than that and you'd spend too much time fighting with the cursor on a controller. Games like Baldur's Gate and the Witcher (1) won't play well with controllers. Dragon Age and KoTOR MAY work, but I can't verify that for you. I mean I could, but I don't have the time right now. Games like Battle Chasers: Night War and other (mostly) JRPG titles are exceptionally welcoming to controller interface.

thanks my friend, that pretty much clarified my doubts. Most of the games I'd play on PC would be like Baldur's Gate indeed, or, very occasionally, if ever, like the Witcher. I'll save my time and just forget about it. As you implied, this PC test stuff is time consuming

Dragon Age Origins doesn't have native controller support:-

Depends on the game. Might do with some newer ones. It certainly won't play well with many older ones though. Quite honestly controllers are better for simpler aRPG's than old-school cRPG's. And even then many older aRPG's (eg, Titan Quest, Torchlight) still don't have native controller support.

Nice to see you recognize geniuses at work.
It really depends on the controller you have.
I've used xpadder for games where I want my joystick to work, despite it not being supported in game. For some RPGs this might be acceptable, however, it's not likely to work if you're needing to make the most of the joystick or gamepad as it's just emulating keystrokes from button presses.

It depends on the gamepad and the software to set it up.

Gamepads with proper motion controls work well enough for a mouse. I am surprised more of them don't come with a mini PC kepad attached like the old playstation or xbox controllers.

Third party? I have never seen a playstation or xbox controller with a full keypad attached. The DualShock 4 has a trackpad with buttons that can be used as a mouse in a pinch, and a headset connector, but no extra keyboard.

Now that one IS 3rd party. I was pointing out 1st party controllers (with addons) because he was sure they didn't exist.
