I think what made me like the alt version better is the fact that you chose to paint the spine of the cover black with minimum decorations. On the other hand, the first version looks more relaxing due to perhaps the whole cover uses one full image for both the front and back of the cover, making the whole thing feels more coherent. This is something that's missing in the alt version, where the black spine of the cover separates two different images where the front is brighter compared to the back that's a little darker in comparison, with the rocky hills and the train at the bottom. Despite that less consistent look of the alt version, the title design on the front of the cover saves it for me as it adds that much needed noise to the calm bright backdrop of the front cover (putting a balance to the back of the cover). But that's just me ^^"

Usually I too prefer the black spine, makes them look more uniform when on the self.
Also, you can always grab the file from BigFatRock's https://rebrand.ly/GOGDVDCovers ("GOG_creation" section) and edit them to your liking, mix and match the elements, like add the black spine, change font and color, etc.
I use an old registered Photoshop 5.0 and Gimp (it's free) for support on newer file types.
