Apok: I've made a cover for The Messenger using dawnpatrol & RenKalan's template.
My first time trying something like this, so feedback is appreciated!
Good job, the screenshots get a little lost in the background though. You need something to make them pop a little - a lighter frame perhaps, like a single gold line to match the text frame - jmo.

Yes I thought about that and it's even worse when printed out on a home printer due to the lower contrast.
Perhaps I'll make an updated version later.

Thanks for the feedback!

EDIT:
I've finished it. Added a small border to the screenshots and also changed the spine title from the logo to regular text because the details weren't very visible when printed.

Nice work =)

My only suggestion would be to add a top / bottom border to allow for different printer / cover configs. Most using the full page format don't add the borders so . . . it's not necessary at all (see attachment)

Hope to see some more covers from you.

I'm not sure what the borders are for exactly as I'm unfamiliar with the possible printing/cover configs, but it should be easy enough to add. How large should the borders be? 24 at the top and 27 pixels at the bottom like your example or is it not that specific?

The borders are not necessary so if you prefer not having them I would leave them off. =) The following are two reasons I still include them.

1) several years ago some printers had problems printing edge-to-edge. Depending on paper size you might find part of the cover's short sides cut off by the printer limitations. That is not really a problem with modern printers. The borders gave some "fudge factor" room on the short length. Some folks might still use older printers so . . .

It was also a problem on the long length for some printers. My old HP printer was limited to a minimum of .560" on the bottom print margin IIRC. No one ever complained to me about the long length??? On a 8-1/2 x 11 paper size I needed a .150" top / bottom margin so I couldn't print covers on my HP. The same could occur for other paper sizes on the short length. My completely outdated printing instructions show the margins needed for the standard cover stock that I used back then. http://www.gog.com/forum/general/unofficial_dvd_covers_for_gog_com_games/post733

2) World wide cover stock production sizes also varied greatly and you could find some of the cover stocks smaller/larger. This resulted in the need to cut off (mostly top/bottom) part of the correctly sized cover image. To fix the problem I would have to resize / reprint the cover image again which was more time and ink. Adding a small border at the bottom/top allowed for cover stock variation and also for some non-cover image to be cut off for smaller stock which avoided the reprinting. If the cover image fit perfectly with your cover stock the borders are not really noticeable and on larger cover stock the grey blended well with the existing cover stock in most cases.

Even with the borders removed, if your printout is too large . . then your back to resizing / reprinting. I no longer print covers but I like to save them with my game install files. I leave the top/bottom borders on my covers designs for those who still print them.

On the width of the border I believe it was 25 top and bottom but I haven't checked it in years. I just plopped your image into my cover template and sized it badly hence the difference between the top/ bottom borders on the image I posted for example. Sorry. =(

You cover work is excellent BTW, hope to see more of them in the future.

Ah, that made things more clear thank you.

I suppose another way would be to make sure there is no important information at the edges, so even if that is cut off for one reason or another, the cover is still usable.

I might make more covers in the future, though finding games I know that someone hasn't already made one for is proving difficult. Not that I'm opposed to making my own variations, the more the merrier I say, but filling holes seems ideal.
On that subject, the sheer volume of your, and other's work is very impressive with consistent quality no less. I think this entire community deserves a thank you for all the work put into a sizeable collection of great looking fanmade covers. So thank you!

That whispers of a machine cover is amazing! If they actually exist in the 90s I will grab it off the shelf so fast. The right cover can make or break a game sales especially when you can't try the demo or watch the gameplay beforehand.

On the Deponia covers on the other hand, here's some criticism. It felt more like a DVD covers for animated series rather than a video game. Some clueless KMart employee might put it on the animated series section instead. Maybe make it more video game style cover?

Your Deponia covers look great. If I were to make Deponia covers I would have used the exact same images. Keep up the great work =)

@Mobeeuz

I would like to ask: could you create something nice looking for Blood: Fresh Supply, My Friend Pedro and most importantly AMID EVIL?
The spam posts keep piling up and the GOG team does nothing . . . even if the spam is reported.

It seems they are sending a clear message . . . .I hear you.
