"Video Game Kickstarter Disappears With Over $30,000"

FYI
PSA

How many others have done this/not followed through on promises?
There's several bigger projects that have failed completely to deliver anything at all, some that haven't even bothered to give any statements of why the project failed. There's also a couple of projects (not necessarily games) where the makers just ran with them money. There's been a couple of lawsuits about them.
Avoid all projects by people who aren't willing to put their name on it. I don't care how ugly they are, having their mug in the kickstarter video is infinitely more attractive than having them hide away in the shadows.

Next up are the people whose names don't mean anything to you. Newbies with a pipe dream are not a sound investment.
Harebrained Schemes on the other hand are established and have a proven track record. I would consider it a "safe" investment. Even when they discovered the couldn't hold up one of their promises they refunded people who asked. That being said, expect the digital download of the game on GoG, but don't expect to get the extras here.

Kickstarter is an investment, and just like any investment you need to do your research.
Of the few i backed (+ 2 still running including battletech), 2 are still wip, 2 are wip overdue, and 1 delivered something else, wich i enjoyed sometime ago, while the project itselff is still wip, way way overdue. I enjoyed everything else that got delivered.
But nowadays i'm more picky about funding.
I'm totally fine with giving HBS some money for making their games.

I've been greatly rewarded two times for that now :)
My kickstarter Safe list would be

Harebrain,
Inxile,
Larian,
Obsidian,

Don't know if there are more trustworthy studio out there
Found yer first problem:
Perhaps that should’ve been an early warning sign: the Mansion Lord Kickstarter page has no contact information or even names of the people behind it.
Caveat Emptor muthableepahs.

I like Kickstarter. I've kickstarted a couple of games with the names and addresses and CVs of the creators plastered all over them so you have years worth of reputations to consider.

But this?

Hey, ya backers. Poke yerself in the eye, learn yer lesson, and move on with life.
backed quite a few kickstarters (big and small). Many have coughed up at the end. handful are "ongoing" (ie Star Command... now that is an ongoing saga..). havent had one fail yet.....

Some dreams don't come true....especially if they are only viewed with optimism.
