So, is Witcher 3 coming out for Linux or not?

See http://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/clusters/frontpage/bd9de138/page_bg_english.jpg?t=1402193004

Looks official, but CD Projekt Red didn't comment so far.

GOG support represenative answered a request about Linux availability of the Witcher 3:

Hello
As for now there were announced only PC, Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game.
Regards
So, better wait with your preorders until official confirmation will be made. At least it looks like there is some chance in the future, since they said "as for now".

An update from Peter Mulholland of Virtual Programming about the Witcher 2 Linux version:
Yes a rework of our DX9 engine is in progress. It will take time.

We plan to do a small update quite soon, for some of the smaller issues such as multimonitor and issues with gamepads. I'm presently working on this
There will be an interview with CD Projekt Red on the upcoming Gamescom. They collect community questions, and one of them is asking them to clarify the situation with Witcher 3 on Linux and verify whether SteamOS ad was real or fake. You can give "REDpoints" to that question to show interest and support for it to be included in the actual interview (the more votes it gets, the more likely it will be addressed).

While you're at it make a proper port of Witcher2. eON was never going to work.
If anyone missed that, the Linux version of the Witcher 2 will come to GOG when Virtual Programming will fix eON performance issues.

Meanwhile, vote for the Linux port of the Witcher 3 if you didn't yet.

Performance improvements in the new beta of the Witcher 2 for Linux:

Public Beta 2 - buildID 341339
We have just updated our public beta with the first beta of our new D3D9 engine. This now employs a technique similar to WINE's CSMT patches - all OpenGL work is now done by a single worker thread, which the D3D9 engine submits commands to. This means that there is only a single GL context, and this makes management a lot easier for the driver.

So far we've seen quite significant performance gains on nVidia hardware. AMD, with fglrx 14.4 rev 2 is not quite so dramatic -we're working with AMD on that.

We'd also like feedback about the MESA radeonsi driver - we've heard that this is getting good enough to run the game, and we'd like some wider news on it.

Please opt-in, and tell us how things are. You can head on over to the Github issue tracker for the game, and post there:

https://github.com/KillaW0lf04/The-Witcher-2-Issues
See also the exact bug that tracks performance issues.

This already looks like a confirmation!

One of the guests at San Diego ComicCon met CD Projekt Red developers and they confirmed to him that the Witcher 3 is coming to Linux:

They had The Witcher 3 shirts on, their lanyards had the company on it, and they looked polish, so I asked them if they were perhaps CDPR devs. They said that they were, and so I shared that I was a fan and thanked them for atleast showing some interest in linux; I then asked them if the rumors that there would be a linux version of TW3 were true, and they said yes. (Definitely a polish accent, and I had seen other devs for other studios there; so I have no doubts that they were really from the studio)

They then gave me one of the leftover grab-packets that they had from the thursday panel and went on their way.

And just to be clear, they didn't say "Yes" when I asked if the rumors were true, but rather "there is a linux version of The Witcher 3".

Witcher 3 for Linux officially remains unconfirmed: https://youtube.com/watch?v=QTzMelOeKEw#t=6m29s

Q: Will Witcher 3 be coming to Linux?

A: It’s too early to say, we’re focusing on releasing it on PC, Xbox One and PS 4, same quality, same experience to all the players. We’ll see after that, Linux, Mac I guess it might be planned but I do not know about it yet.

The beta 4 of the Witcher 2 is now "release 2":

Release 2 - buildID 359285

Since as Beta 4 seems to be such a wide improvement both performance and stability wise, we have chosen to make this the current release.

The only change from buildID 355503, is that we are now shipping openal-soft 1.16.0 with the game.

This "Release 2" doesn't mean we are done with improving things, but it does mean we feel that we have improved enough to consign the initial release to the bin :) We still have some more ideas on how to get more performance out of our D3D9 engine, but before we can look at implementing those we are waiting on improvements from both AMD and Intel on the driver front.

The beta branch has therefore now been disabled, and Steam should revert you to the default branch, ie "Opt out of all betas". Please check Steam has done this, and revert if necessary. It may take a client restart before Steam will notice the new default branch.

Thanks for all the constructive feedback so far!

Check out this SteamOS sale: http://store.steampowered.com/sale/steamos_sale
And notice that they list Witcher 3, while saying: The year's most popular games are headed to SteamOS.
Screenshot.

Does it mean Valve still thinks Witcher 3 is going to be ported to Linux?

Here is the new Steam ad:

Looks rather official since it's the second time already.

Could also mean some form of Streaming from a Windows machine. On another note, that picture does show a lot of Linux games with native builds so it might just come at some point.

I'm not sure how are they going to pull this off since the game requires DX11 and they wouldn't keep a DX9 renderer just for the Linux wrapper, they would go for OpenGL directly. A word from CDPR would surely clear things up a little.

DX11 has feature parity in OpenGL 4.x, so they can as well use that. Or if they have access they can already use the new Vulkan API (I'd actually prefer the later).
