BreOl72: Isn't it a good time for comic-fans?
avatar
Breja: Not really. I think comic books are mostly not very good nowadays.
And I'd agree with you on that - I only re-read old comics (aka: comics, that I read in my childhood/youth already).

But my point was more that we get all these (arguably great) comic-adaptions, that I at least, would've loved as a kid/ teen.

avatar
Breja: Also the quality of most of those adaptations is questionable at best. Why would a fan of the comics be happy to see them turned itno such poor, simplified, castrated versions of themselves as Arrow or Constantine, not to mention the Lucifer thing? Sure, there are some great movies too, like Man of Steel or Days of Future Past, but most of it is just bland popcorn flicks like Age of Ultron and soap opera level TV.
Well, like I said above (arguably great) comic adaptions are (in my eyes!) still better, than no comic-adaptions.

Opinions on this may differ, of course.

As an aside: I haven't seen or read Constantine, or Lucifer - so I can't/ won't comment on those.

But, personally, I like Arrow and the Flash.
I also liked the Spiderman movies (both versions), the Dark Knight trilogy, and two of the Iron Man movies.
I could even enjoy watching the Fantastic Four movies.

Haven' seen Man of Steel, yet - but loathed The Return of Superman.
Well - Supi wasn't a favorite of mine since the mid 80s, so...

In the end, I guess, it always comes back to tastes and opinions, that differ. :)
Is Geralt of Rivia in it?

Breja: Not really. I think comic books are mostly not very good nowadays. The popularity and amount of comic book adaptations overshadowed the comics entirely, instead of boosting them.
I would argue that this, and what the article you quoted says, mainly applies to the major properties of major publishers. There are a few slightly lesser known franchises, but we've mainly seen a gazzilion superman, batman, spiderman and X-Men movies over the years.

And I'd argue that these aren't necessarily the best comic books anyway (even if some of them are good).

There's still a vibrant indie scene and smaller publishers. I'm not that knowledgeable about this market, but at least this is what it seems to me.

Elmofongo: I watched Lawrence of Arabia recently. And it was EPIC:

Seriously it was the first time I saw the whole movie., Why is Citizen Kane considered the greatest movie of all time?

Breja: It is one of the best movies I've seen. A true masterpiece. 3:40h long, and cutting a single second would be a crime. And O'Toole is magnificent in it.

That being said I think my favourite role of his is in Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell. I wish I could have seen it live.
I kinda hoped, cynically, that his death would trigger a re-publishing of "The Stuntman". I adore that film, but it's not available here on dvd/bluray.

But nope. However, expect four bonus-filled collector versions of supergirl once that is out. Because, yeah. So. Well. There.

I was speaking about the big two superhero publishers mostly of course. As I am mostly devoting my time and money to completing my library of older comics like Hellblazer or Grell's Green Arrow I'm not really up to speed with todays indie publishers.

But I know that there are still some good comics. Hell, even DC still has some good stuff like the brilliant Injustice series. What I mean is really that the succes of comic book properties in other media did not help comic books as such, it feels much more like a parasytic relation, and that comic books no longer really matter. Even the good ones, they don't have the sort of impact and place in popular culture series like Watchmen, Hellblazer or Sandman had. I bloody love Tale of Sand, but I would probably die of old age before I find anyone outside of a comic book store who would now what the hell that is. And that one has Jim Hanson's name attached to it.
Well, the trailer (and therefore the pilot) seems to have good production values and decent acting; on the other hand it also seems to be extremely corny and sexist.
My 2 cents.

tinyE: Supergirl is such a bullshit super hero!

There are so many great female heroes out there and she isn't one of them. A damn shame if you ask me.

I still have nightmares about trying to sit through that movie! AHHHHH!!!!
Why, it was nice :P.

The part with the tractor always scared me.

wow all of that happens in one movie, i dont remember anything, need to watch it again
Sometimes I didn't really know if I should cringe or laugh...or both. No idea. Will judge after seeing more than the trailer though (and yay, Ally McBeal is back :P).

I'll take your word for it. Here in Israel comics were always a marginal form of entertainment.

As somewhat of an outsider, I'd say that one reason movies aren't helping comics is that movies are aimed at the uninitiated and comics are aimed at comic fans. You need to be very familiar with the characters and world to fully enjoy comics. If someone watches a movie and wants to read related comics, they'd have no clue where to start. It doesn't help that the major franchises have several distinct series running concurrently, featuring different versions of the same heroes.
I liked Legends of Tomorrow teaser.
Specially working ATOM suit.
