Stumbled upon my old installation disk a couple months back and didn't think much of it, but the release of Starpoint Gemini 2 is bringing up a lot of comparisons to Freelancer.

I played it many years ago and my long term recollection was that it's okay. Kinda meh, But with all the recent mention of the game I took a look at it over on mobygames and now I'm thinking I might be remembering some other title. Some of the screenshots are vaguely familiar but there are some other things etched in my recollection of the game that don't match the screenshots at all.

One specific thing I keep thinking about is that there was some sort of hyperspace travel and that you could be yanked out of hyperspace and thrown into combat. Does that sound about right? I'm hoping that was a different game because I remember that part being a real annoyance after about the 50th occurrence.

Got a lot of biz traveling to do over the next three weeks so maybe that's a good opportunity to give it another go.

I recall that happening in "Privateer 2".

that can happen if you use the "trade lanes" in Freelancer. but my experience is that it doesn't happen all the time though.
it happens from time to time, but as far as i remember it was rare in freelancer, especially in story mission
Freelancer was released at the tail end of a fantastic decade for space sims and was pounced upon by gamers starved for a competent iteration (including me). Great series like Wing Commander, Star Wars and Freespace had been played out, and Freelancer was the only title worth playing at the time.

Don't get me wrong, Freelancer was great and it's worth installing again with mods, but it did benefit from being a big fish in a small pond, in my opinion :)

Edit: I suggested mods. It'd be cruel not to provide a general and a more [url=http://www.crossfire.swat-portal.com/]specific one as well ;) Don't forget that PCGamingWiki is always your friend!

I remember Freelancer as an okay game. It had a decent combat system, but not great, it had a decent freeroaming system, but not great. As far as I'm concerned, it's a simplified version of X series with not nearly as much complexity. Still, core gameplay was better than X games, and it's a lot more combat focused.
I'll admit my recollection of Freelancer is that it was less than stellar (pun intended). It was hyped as this ultimate sandbox game where you could go anywhere and do anything, but not very far into the game, it railroaded me into a completely linear series of at least 7 battles (maybe more, but that's as far as I got) with no possibility of repairing my ship inbetween. It completely took away the joy of the game for me. It was as if some sadistic director was sitting behinds the scenes going "How did that go? He's still alive? Give him another battle then, and don't let him repair his ship. Keep going until he is dead!" I uninstalled the game then, and never went back to it.
I'm the sixteen thousandth and eighty third person to vote for this on the community wishlist.
Installed a few minutes ago. For some reason I don't have the manual so www.replacementdocs.com to the rescuuuuuee!!! Some light skimming and then I'll throw myself into it, hopefully starting tonight. If I can get off my ass enough to do so I'll report back with impressions as the game progresses.
You don't need a reason to play Freelancer again . Just do it.
I can't make fun of Licurg for that one, he's dead on.

That game is just so damn good and it's a shame that control scheme hasn't been embraced more; not like it's overly complicated.
I quite liked Freelancer, although I felt that the freedom it supposedly grants the player is very superficial - the main campaign plays out pretty much the same regardless of how you would actually want it to.

Also, keep a backup save from before you start a quest. There's one very long multi-stage quest in the game that you can save in the middle of but not cancel if it goes badly, so you may end up dead in the water, facing an assault on a capital ship with no money to repair your crippled ship or buy missiles for the one launcher that is functioning, barely supporting that one cannon that hasn't been blown into orbit.
Freelancer was a great game! I loved how the game had "trade-lanes" for fast transport between the planets. I remember pirates would attack these gates that would drop the ships out of "warp" and then attack you!

The docking procedure for the planets was cool as well. But it was always curious to have to "wait in queue" for a computer game! But the best part had to be the multiplayer. I had a friend who had a private server for Freelancer, and we would play the game for hours on end. It was a lot of fun!

If GOG ever signs up with Microsoft, Freelancer has to be one of the first Microsoft games to show up here! Thousands of people have wished for it on the GOG Wishlist. Freelancer deserves a second chance!
Why do you remind me of that, WHY? :P

It's such a good game. *starts searching for the retail copy*

That sounds quite a lot like what I experienced.
