xybolt: Is it bad that it's being offered via GOG Galaxy client only?
It's yet another example of GOG aggressively pushing people towards installing their crappy nonportable proprietary "optional" spyware DRM client and simultaneously treating non-Galaxy users like second class citizens. Yes, it is bad.

Look at Epic Games. It has offered a lot free games as part of their marketing, and many people has only created an account to claim it. That they have used the launcher afterwards is not a certainty.
100% irrelevant. GOG isn't Epic, we did not become GOG users for the values that Epic holds. Just because some drooling dogs are willing to sell their kidney for a free game doesn't mean it's good for companies to pressure them into doing so.

For those "struggling to understand" why people are complaining - The real issue is that this particular issue doesn't exist in an isolated vacuum. After a chain of recent events...

... GOG seem to have become almost addicted to consistently sending the wrong message if they're still trying to convince people that offline installer users aren't second class citizens...

MetoF50: Except that GOG Galaxy is the most optional launcher out there? Not only it is the most optional launcher, but it's actually the only launcher that makes sense.
Once the game is in your account, by all means delete the launcher and download the game from the site directly.
And my point is - I want it to remain optional. Things like this don't help. What guarantee do we have that in a sale or two, all giveaways don't require Goglaxy?
And then, some 2 or 3 years from now we may get a "good news" announcement, that GOG staff is overworked, offline installers require too much time to maintain and most users use Goglaxy anyway. So why bother with offline installers?

^ This. Many of us here aren't that stupid that we can't "join the dots" and see where this is heading long-term with the "optional" client with all the other stuff going on recently...

Galaxy aside, bolded and underlined are the parts that bother me the most. Is there any place left on the planet where you can merely hand over money in exchange for a product, without having to sign away away your vital statistics in perpetuity to the cult of the Great Marketing Algorithm?

Only if you don't use the pc, internet or a mobile phone then yes. Otherwise no.

And only if you buy in a retail store where they don't want to know your personal data but that is very rare today.

Well you can simply buy The Witcher. And it's on sale fairly often too.

On GOG (outdated offline installers aside) you don't need to enter any personal information. You can create an account using a throwaway email address, buy and download a game and never ever have any contact with GOG again.

Your point being?
You can simply just buy the game, hand over money, and nobody's gonna ask you to sign up for newsletters
In this case they're giving away game in exchange for a newsletter subscription. You're not forced to participate and you're even less required to pay money for this.

The launcher will remain optional. At the very worst, it may become a requirement to download the offline installers, which is what I normally use, since I don't want to rely on a browser.

Besides that, I don't believe GOG will risk their reputation by turning themselves into Steam. The main reason people buy from GOG is because games are 100% DRM Free with offline installers. And if they take that away, they will lose their entire userbase to Steam. That's it. And just because they ask you to download a launcher, just to claim a a free copy of a game, which btw is something nobody is forcing you to do so, you probably have the game already and if you don't, you have missed all of the previous GOG offers, doesn't mean they are taking steps forward to lock down the platform.

Have you even tried GOG 2.0 in the first place? If I get a choice to select one launcher and all of the others die, it's the Galaxy 2.0 that I would like to keep. Maybe this is a marketing strategy to get you to download the launcher and show you all of the new cool features it has that you might have missed on.

Do you know how many people made Epic Games accounts and downloaded the Epic Games launcher just to get a free copy of GTA V, they blew the servers? And that game is not DRM-free. You have Epic's DRM on top of Rockstar's DRM.

I think this promotion is alright. It is completly optional after all and you must do something to get something.

By the way, I have problems finding the Galaxy for Linux download.

Okay, I take your "Witcher 1 Enhanced Edition" key and raise it by a free GWENT card keg.

Hey! wasn't that free? what a novelty... a free video game that for some years was already free with the download of the GOG Galaxy... In any case, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut is a great addition to any GOG user's catalogue or collection. Congratulations to the new owners of this great franchise!
