Dogmaus: Like any other game in your library I guess. Download the offline installer from your library or let Galaxy install it for you. I already owned the game and I didn't see any banner btw.
avatar
SinShadowFox: I don't see an install button. what do i click on?
I don't understand. You've been a user since 2013. How have you installed any game all this time? Go in your account and you will see your games. Find the Witcher and download the installer. I'm not sure if you are pulling my leg.

SomeGuy8504: I'm going to sound like such a brainwashed child, but... Wow, I never thought about it that way.
I have just been installing clients left and right and generally did what these companies tell me.
But wow, your post about friggin' video game clients and their useless features felt like a short burst of enlightenment.

Jeez, I don't like achievements, I don't care for social platforms, don't have friends that play computer games so friends lists are worthless, Activity Feed really does sound like a nightmare, yadda yadda...

It's funny, this thread that attempts to promote a client actually made me see how worthless clients are.
Thanks man, I am actually uninstalling Galaxy right now, not joking either.
Well the only Real point of a client is an easy way to update your software, be it Galaxy, Steam or even Windows Store.
Galaxy also goes to the length of Reverting said updates in certain situations, which is added value.
Everything else is pretty much "extra", and if you don't need it and your games don't require updating it is indeed redundant.

Since GOG confirmed they will be selling DRMed games (from other companies like Epic) via Galaxy 2.0 store, in addition to the increasing number of games here on GOG.com that can be seen as having DRM, I knew I was right to be wary of spending money here. And may I add that it is so dumb to fracture your audience like this.

Consider it this way:

Old-school-minded users: will generally refuse to use DRMed products such as anything Galaxy-only and don't want Galaxy in the offline installers.

New-school users who looooooveeeeee clients: have never, not a single instance I have ever seen, complained about the existence of offline installers.

So since the new users you want so badly don't have any apparent issue with the clientless way of doing things being an option, and the old users do want clientless products, why not just provide clientless products instead of shedding part of your audience? Stupid is as stupid does. I'm so glad I refunded Cyberpunk preorder.

BadDecissions: stuff
It's also not just the client per se. It's also that the v2 of the client is grossly inferior to v1 of the client, and is what's enabling their bullshit like the Epic deal and other offensive policies. If I run the v2 client, I get DRMed and microtransaction games advertised to me if I click in certain places, and there's no way to turn that off! (And this is beyond it being inferior to v1 just in basic find/install/update/sync my own games.)
I accidently hit not interested. Is there a way to claim the copy?

WiseLearnedMan: Galaxy aside, bolded and underlined are the parts that bother me the most. Is there any place left on the planet where you can merely hand over money in exchange for a product, without having to sign away away your vital statistics in perpetuity to the cult of the Great Marketing Algorithm?
I mean... It depends on personal definiton... but I personally see Playism as more pure than GOG. At least Playism isn't actively lying about things being DRM-free or non-DRM-free (cough NMS cough).

Matruchus: Only if you don't use the pc, internet or a mobile phone then yes. Otherwise no.

And only if you buy in a retail store where they don't want to know your personal data but that is very rare today.
And there you get recorded on CCTV. Plus if you by any chance happen to pay by card... you get the idea...

timppu: Another question: what do you feel is the motive for GOG doing this, make it possible to redeem a free game only through the client? Why not allow it for non-client users?
Bring more people into Galaxy. Then wall in the garden saying "but majority is already there so what's the problem".

avatar
timppu: Next logical step indeed would be that you can download and install games only with the Galaxy client. While I possibly could live with that myself (as long as the procedure was simple and the downloaded/installed game would be fully portable ie. I can play it on another PC without Galaxy), I can understand why it would irk many people.
Frankly (and lo and behold it's some unwritten rule people as a general rule tend to just not see this point), at that point that's no different from Steam for major amount of games - what am I talking about? - there is TONS of DRM-free-after-installed games on Steam, you just install them through Valve's launcher and then they have literally no DRM and are fully portable. Then there is the fact that from those ACTUALLY DRMed you can remove DRM through casual efforts from vast chunk of that specific list of games.
The moment Galaxy becomes mandatory for ALL installs is the moment there will be literally no incentive whatsoever for DRM-free purist people (such as myself, tho I am not some blind fanatic, if I can remove DRM from Steam game myself and cram manual backup of it somewhere I'm fine with it since I care about specificly lack of DRM and not neccesarily "by default" [tho I generally aim for it whenever possible]) to buy anything here anymore.

I hv vast IT experience, especially in the field of dealing with some obscure exotic BS, I hv disected Win 7 inside out over the years, for me Win 10 is LITERALLY the WORST Windows M$ has EVER made. And I say it as a person that used EVERYTHING from 95 all the way to 10, including server ones and mobile too (plus DOS, I am not 100% sure if I used Win 3/3.1).

Well, welcome to *NIX ;) Hv fun. Hope your stay becomes eternal :)

ChumpThump: The industry needs more competition. That means that people need to be aware that there are different places for people to get PC games. Places that do more than just sell you slightly discounted Steam Keys.
We need COMPETENT competition, not wolves-in-sheeps-skin ( E**) nor platform-principles-mercenaries ( G** ).

So, the usual for this market tactics: invest into the new userbase and ditch the old userbase. Because new users will accept new rules as something given and will not ask uncomfortable questions. Nothing new.
BTW, GOG already made some of the XP-compatible games from their library to be no longer compatible. Since such are minimal requirements for the galaxy.dll.

great release
I cannot seem to see the banner on top? Going to recent has a tip to add games and friends, but after closing that banner, there is no banner for The Witcher: Enhanced Edition.

BadDecissions: Mixed feelings, I guess. I mean … GOG invested a lot into the client, and they'd like people to use the client. So they throw up a deal that they hope will get people to try the client; and maybe some people don't like it, and uninstall it, but hopefully some people do like it, and they keep using it. That strikes me as pretty harmless, and I don't think there were any sinister intentions behind it.

But the people who are getting angry about this aren't coming out of nowhere. It was pretty recently, that GOG announced that they were going to sell Epic games via their client. And when people asked GOG, "Wait, what, you're a key-reseller now?" … well first, one of their moderators spent a few days screaming at everyone who was worried. Then, we got a canned response about how they Heard Our Concerns, but it's fine, everything is fine, followed by silence. So that happened

And then people noticed that one of their games (No Man's Sky) had single-player content locked away online. And when people asked GOG, "Wait, isn't requiring us to go log on online to get single-player content practically the definition of DRM?" … well, first they ignored everyone who was worried. Then they posted a response about how they Heard Our Concerns, and they would definitely contact the game devs about this … and then nothing happened.

So … not the absolute best time to announce a giveaway that explicitly excludes people who view Galaxy as DRM, is it?
i don't even know at this point does it matter everyone has to have a gog copy by now, I actually deleted my gam 2 times though support and still claimed a free copy ad also this https://www.gog.com/gwent-welcome-bonus
you can say there are 2 ways to get a copy

people had 5 or 6 chances and still have 2 currently to get Witcher for free..

JamesBond007: I will not participate, because I already got free Witcher 1 (and later 2) many weeks ago.

With Witcher 3 for free, this could be another story.
you can still get it :D
https://www.gog.com/gwent-welcome-bonus although newsletter version

I think it was free during witcher 3 release, gwent release, welcome bonus 2 or 3 times

Witcher was free a lot of times i'm shocked people still actually don't have it because of the number of times it was free.

People who knew what is it and why is it of course have it already. As I mentioned above, this action targets casuals who never heard of this game. And those casuals will be added to the Galaxy auditory as a thankful customers. And, when time comes, they will argue with those like you and me about new questionable changes in the policy. Because they had their profit while we are on the loosing side. It's like politics: divide et impera.
