If I have to choose between one evil or another, I'd rather not choose at all – Geralt of Rivia

15 years ago, on October 26th, 2007, CD PROJEKT RED released the first part of The Witcher series, the beginning of the incredible adventures of Geralt of Rivia and his companions. Although it was the developer's first game, this story-rich, atmospheric, fantasy RPG received critical praise around the world and started to gather crowds of fans whose love for The Witcher’s world was either reignited or started anew.

And it is 2007’s The Witcher that allowed the series to later bloom on an absolutely massive scale with both The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and now already legendary The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.

In celebration of the birth of The Witcher, CD PROJEKT RED announced the REMAKE of the original title!

The project, previously referred to by the codename "Canis Majoris" during the studio’s Strategy Update earlier in October, will be a modern reimagining of the first part of The Witcher Trilogy. It will be built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 technology, and will use the toolset CDPR is creating for the new Witcher saga. The project is currently in the early stages of development at Fool’s Theory — a game development studio specializing in role-playing games. The team employs numerous veteran developers who previously worked on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. In addition, CD PROJEKT RED is providing full creative supervision. You can find the original announcement HERE.

It is impossible to express how excited we are hearing that news! But then again, incredible titles deserve incredible anniversary gifts! We would also like to pitch our part to this and remind you that you can claim The Witcher: Enhanced Edition for FREE!

In order to do so visit our GWENT Welcome Bonus which by subscribing to the GOG Newsletter allows you not only to claim The Witcher: Enhanced Edition but also a free GWENT Card Keg! Remember that in order to do so you must have GWENT in your game library.

But that’s not all! We’ve also prepared a Special Sale for all CD PROJEKT RED titles with discounts as high as 85%! This sale lasts until November 3rd, 11 PM UTC. Check out some examples:

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition - 85% off
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Game of the Year Edition - 80% off
Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales - 70% off
GWENT: Rogue Mage - Deluxe Edition - 30% off
Cyberpunk 2077 - 50% off

Let’s remind ourselves how The Witcher Trilogy started, while we await both new and remade chapters in our favourite dark, grim, fantasy world.
In the immortal words of Adam Jensen: "I never asked for this".

As much as I loved the Witcher 3, the first one is still my favorite. I do not want any of its systems, whether it's combat, alchemy or dialogues, replaced with anything "modern". I don't want the story, the world, the characters or the ambiance messed with. I don't want to play Gwent in it. I don't want the erotic cards replaced with dull cut-scenes of CG puppets fucking. A remake has nothing to offer.

You want to remake something? Remake Cyberpunk.
still haven't played the series, too much of a time commitment, so might wait another 5 years. then find out the remake is shit/unnecessary and play the oriiginal after all. or I could play the whole series by the time this comes out and just ignore the remake even if it's free for original owners, which of course it won't be.
I like how people judge the remake before they have seen or played anything of it. LOL.

If it is similar to the Mafia 1 Remake it will be a good remake.

There's an opportunity here to redefine "modern reimagining" or at least mitigate its current meaning by providing an example of a "modern reimagining done right" (as in just a purely visual/graphical update while leaving the story, narrative, characters & characterisation, as well as its late 2000s idiosyncracies untouched and intact).

GOG.com: In celebration of the birth of The Witcher, CD PROJEKT RED announced the REMAKE of the original title!
The Witcher series is one of the few to feature save importing. From 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3. This MUST BE MAINTAINED at all costs! I cannot stress this enough.

Please ensure that the remake uses the same save format, as the original, or generates an old-school save upon completion of the game. A 3rd option would be to update Witcher 2 to read the remake's save. If you go with #3, please add GOG achievements to Witcher 2, while you're at it *wink**wink*.

This came surprising for me ... interesting but I am not sure if I'd want to replay the same story again. Well, time will tell.

What I find amusing though is the "get Witcher Enhanced Edition for free" part since to get it for free you will need to get Gwent as well (which might be the reason that some won't even use this offer because they simply hate to get things forced onto them and Gwent is a prime example for this ... no matter if it is good or bad, it is forced). The funniest aspect of this offer though is that it is ongoing since years now (google it and you will find the announcements - they never took the page offline) ... so not that much of an anniversary offer anyway. I am not sure but I think the game also once was available for free here without the Gwent requirement ... but I could be mistaken on this.

But I don't want to rant, the above is merely a funny observation of mine. I really enjoyed the Witcher games and it all started with Witcher Enhanced Edition which I got in a giveaway this community had done. So thanks for this, thanks for all the enjoyable hours I had with the Witcher games and happy anniversary CDPR and "The Witcher Enhanced Edition" :)

They might do so when it comes to The Witcher 2 anniversary ;)

Why remake something that is already perfect. I like TW1 as it is.
Congratulations, The First Witcher is one of the worst RPG's I've ever played, i had to force myself to finish it due to how boring and repetitive the combat was. He'll one of my friends calls it "Fetch Quest: The Video Game" which I fully understand. Hope the remake allows you to fix all the issues the game has.

Indeed. It also had one of the most realistic implementations of an inventory system I've ever seen in an RPG.
How about releasing DoW?
What a great game The Witcher is. I still did not progress with the series because of one dilemma: Who should raise the kid? One day I will sort it out and return with the answer. Congratulations to the developers. Loved every minute of it.
Fix the first dog-boss
thx

and hit detection in the sequel plz

Indeed, there is no need of a remake as of now.

Added later: However, if CD manages to add something to the experience, or at least make it more sexy for newcomers already spoikt by very high res textures, why not. Anything that helps.

I have only one thing to say

Fast travel

That is all
Sweet. However I have them all already but on steam and a copy of the 1st game again on GOG. So I gifted my free copy to a friend from work. For some reason I thought the next game would be a new installment and not a remake so let's hope there's some extra bits or a different way to get from start to finish to spice things up a little.
