Just keeping the fire going =) There was a thread for this already, but it is among the threads that have been lost in the General Discussion archives.

Been playing it for the past week. It's basically "The Ur Quan Masters" (UQM), which is a free source port of Star Control 2, but with updated graphics, textures and hires. I recommend it for those who want to revisit the game, or for those who want to play it for the first time.

Now the only reason you'd want to buy it on GOG would be for Star Control 1.

That reason existed from the moment they started selling Star Control 2 here. It's really one of their lesser offerings considering Ur-quan Masters is out there and completely legit free.

Thanks for sharing this. +1 If you feel like spreading the word in another thread, here is the perfect thread. http://www.gog.com/forum/general/free_games_and_3rd_party_mods_the_updated_list

Of course. My point is, another reason now would be the nicer visuals =)
Cool, thanks :) Have the original but lost interest playing it because the massive time pressure before just game over you lose. Kinda dumb for a game that invites you to explore it forever. Does the HD version has the same "problem"?

If you ask in the game subforum, someone will happily tell you how to add up to several years of game time - if you don't already know.

If you do the things that stave off the "impending doom" that you have to prevent, you can explore almost the entire map.

EDIT: removed spoilers because a) I think one was wrong and b) it should be in the subforum. Bad OFP.

Good to know, will search the web before the next try on the game. Thanks! :)

Bump
Thanks for this -- I play Ur-Quan Masters, but had no idea there was a new HD version available.
thanks for the info. I played SC2 way back in the early 90s but never finished and started a replay using Ur Quan Masters probably earlier this year, but got off to a bad start so kindof stopped. I'll check out the HD version when I give it a try again.

The little mini-game of jumping down to the planets to collect minerals seemed alot more interesting back in the 90s than it does now.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the reminder, I did not have this on my new PC and I have been meaning to try it out at some point.
