Sulibor: No, I have both the demo and full version of Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun assigned to my account.
avatar
Clairsentient: That's what I'm afraid of.

Even when I hide a game, it still counts toward my total games.
Sometimes demos offer unique levels, not found in full game (from top of my head: Jedi Knighgt 2, Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive and from new and present on gog Overload) so sometimes keeping them assigned to your account makes sense.

This. Especially with software that, while fulfilling the purpose of a demo, appear to be a prologue or sidequest to the main program. Many get called "Prologue", actually. This is not new. Starcraft had a fun demo that was actually the prologue to the story, telling how the first contact between Human and Zerg happened.

Since there was some talking about the Heroes of Might and Magic series: Those who try Heroes of Might and Magic III, remember that it is possible to get it to work with a large resolution, more than back in the day.

eiii: I've started with HoMM IV and had no problems.
avatar
Carradice: For those who have not played these games: The main difference between IV and the rest is that the hero appears as a unit in the army during battles. Sounds neat, right?. However, the enemy could start by killing your hero straight away. That meant the battle was over.
You’re misremembering ;)
The hero death does not cause the end of the battle in any way, it still goes on until one army is defeated. Then the dead hero needs to be escorted to a friendly town, where she will be resurrected.
EDIT
nvm!

It's just a number. I have struggled with letting go of my attachment to nebulous values like online rep and percent complete on a game, and am always much happier after forcing myself to admit that it doesn't matter.

There's also a spell that instantly resurrects heroes a certain number of times. And you can have armies of just heroes anyway, fill all slots.

No, the battle continues. You even can win it when the rest of your army is strong enough.

Carradice: Besides that, there were innovations, but it became commonplace (possibly unfairly) to despise IV.
HoMM IV changed the handling of the heroes. And people do not like changes. That's why a lot of the players coming from HoMM III did not like HoMM IV. Personally I find the hero handling in HoMM IV much better. It gives you more flexibility and options. You can use more than one hero in an army, which allows you to combine the strengths of different hero categories. And you can use armies without a hero. That and the introduction of caravans in HoMM IV makes the handling of reinforcements less tedious.

But yes, HoMM IV plays differently to HoMM III (and earlier versions). To people which never have played any HoMM game I only can recommend to try out both, HoMM IV and HoMM III, to check out which game mechanics fits your playing style better.

Mori_Yuki: It's not necessarily what I have in mind. A shop-like page with demos and prologues which would unclutter the shop.
I do not mind having to add the demos to my account, especially as it allows me to keep a demo even when it is removed from the shop. But I would like to have demos in a separate category, just like it is done with the movies.

avatar
Clairsentient: I don't want them to count toward my game's count.
Agreed. With hopefully more demos coming to GOG they unnecessarily clutter up the game catalog and the list of owned games. That's why it would be better to have them in a separate category.

Yes, this is a good idea.
A different category for demos, prologues, and goodies, just like the movies category.

I'd be surprised if GOG listens to this feedback :)

It would also be nice to have more filters in library. Such as ability to filter based on type (game, demo, STANDALONE goodies, etc).

Also, perhaps it's just me but the library refuses to display more than 1 tag per game on a grid view even tho the space for additional ones is plentiful in the div.

eiii: HoMM IV changed the handling of the heroes. And people do not like changes.
The problem I had with Heroes IV was not the changes, but rather that the AI was utterly brain-dead to the point of ruining the game. They knew but released it anyway instead of fixing it. (That is, the battlefield AI was OK, but not the strategic AI.) The campaign cleverly disguised this by having you fight against mobs 99% of the time, with the occasional AI (that never really did anything) thrown it to make it seem like something more interesting was happening. Playing scenarios was completely pointless. Maybe it was fun playing against other humans.

eiii: No, the battle continues.
Thanks for making it clear! :-D You are right. However, with the average 1-hero army, the death of the single hero usually tipped the scales dramatically. If the armies were equal, losing your hero normally means defeat. Even if you somehow won, your losses were going to be higher. Then, the remnants of the army would move at a reduced speed to a place where the hero could be resurrected. All this was quite punishing. The problem of making the game work like chess (go for the hero first) is that you could not protect the hero as efficiently as you can protect your king in chess.

Sure, we agree. It is a pity when you meet a game full of promise that becomes an underdog and is unfairly despised.

I actually would recommend starting with II for people who can play older games. It is worth it. Then, III can be played at high resolution and that is nice. About IV, I would suggest: play it after III and see if enjoy the changes: troops ferrying by themselves was neat, and the management of heroes was interesting (everything but the way they were brought to the battle).

I wonder what might have happened if the developers had been a bit more imaginative in the way they brought the heroes to the battle. Allowing troops nearby to intercept attacks, or providing them with some sort of Parma Magica so that they would not be affected by enemy spells and fliers in the same way that the rest of the units. Maybe giving them a retinue/comites/garde du corps that defended the hero but could not be used in attack... Or allowing direct attacks to the leading hero only after a sizeable part of the hero's army was defeated... Or allowing attacks to and from bodyguards only after said sizeable part of the hero is defeated... Maybe giving the hero a chance to retreat (at the cost of losing a part of the troops in the retreat, if you want)... Imagine a popup informing the player "The remaining troops of your army cannot effectively impede that the retinue of your leading hero is attacked. There will be risk to your leading hero if you do not retreat now. 1) Press on the fight. 2) Retreat the hero. 3) General retreat (additional loses)."

...I do not know, it is the job of the developers to invent something. It was exciting to see heroes in the battlefield, but the way they implemented it was very flawed. Which was a pity, since the game had a lot of great ideas.

For those who remember both III, IV, and V: did not several of the innovations of IV pass on to V?

It's not just you. It would be nice to see all tags checked which in my case should display Downloaded and Finished.

I also discovered that GOG added a Soon to bloom collection page They should keep it up and running adding direct downloads as suggested.

In re eiii I don't mind demos being added to my account. As opposed to In-dev titles prologues and demos, once downloaded, can and should be shared! Nothing illegal there. By nature what's in the wild is staying around forever. So I don't see why this should be gated by an account and not free for all visiting this website. Seeing as how Steam has those timed demos might really attract people to GOG if for no other reason.

Besides there is one other thing I think needs be changed: Special sales.

Usually I browse discounted games adding items to my basket then continuing to a special sales page. The way it works is that I have to tick boxes and process to checkout once satisfied with the selection. When clicking the checkout button I can only pay for titles added from the special sales page ... Why can't I also pay for items already in my basket?

Consider how much worse this situation gets when there is more than one special sales page. You got to pay extra each time instead of adding the items to your basket allowing you to pay for all your items. What say you, GOG - if anything?
