Yeah, the HD4000 is actually surprisingly capable - It actually benches faster than the nVidia GeForce 7950GT AGP (The most powerful AGP card that exists!) that I have in my Windows 2000 machine in lots of things, but it does rely on the game being optimized, and sadly that costs time and skill.

There are a lot of games out there that should run great on a HD4000 that don't just because of the lack of optimization (Two big standouts off the top of my head are Maize and the recent Darksiders game - They should both have no trouble running on a HD4000 for the level of quality and complexity they show, but because they're so inefficient they can't even break into double figures FPS which really sucks. I've even managed to get Witcher 2 to run on this thing faster than those two, albeit with everything looking like something from a Salvador Dali painting being looked at from distance by a shortsighted drunk person)

There are thankfully a few channels on youtube that test newer games on the HD4000 so you can see if they are worth buying or not. Two I use are:

I can say the recent Dishonoured and Wolfy bundles work playably well on my Thinkpad X230! (At least for now; I just found out someone has discovered a software hack for the BIOS whitelist called 1vyrain - I'm going to see if it works so I can upgrade the garbage Intel 6205 WiFi chip that's been the bane of its existence... this may end badly... )

The question is how much does the benchmark score benefit from the new CPU as well. I also have an old AGP GPU - Ati HD3650 and performance is similar to Intel HD 4000, but my new CPU is 3.5 times faster than the one in my old computer, so that must influence the score as well.

Twin dual ram will also increase performance.

Ha! That is a good point... My brother was finding that KSP ran faster on his X230 than on the AMD Kaveri box he built despite that having a stronger gfx card simply because the CPU side is so weak!

official??? the coming chips are expected to run at the speed of a 1050Ti .... nothing to discuss there.. just be happy and/or provide some aio cooler for it while your at it

good enough indeed, i actually just ordered a modular powersupply for a relative..... she's been editing ( powerpoint word and other easy design stuff ) all this time on a integrated intel graphics chip of the 4th gen i belief... 4th gen i3! 4 gb of memory....

anyway got hold of another device, first gen i7 nonetheless and that had a simple old amd graphics card running within. The owner used it for video editing so i thougt this should work too..... installed that bugger and yep the problems started... Now there is an occasional boot error she's actually quite fine with but won't stop talking about it ( women in general and pc's equals aaargh )

just this midday i felt so annoyed by something i found and ordered a cheap modular psu 550W that comes supplied with all the right cables so next week i'll be off to her place with 2 vengeance sticks i had gathering dust a rog strix 1050Ti and the psu... I so hope this will work! My only doubt is if i want to get some custom cheap cooler for the poor thing but i guess it will be oke
well i guess the next gen intel or the current one will be happier with water then with air... I know for a fact my ryzen 5 at 65TDP is a lot happier with water

Where is decent to buy laptops in Canada?!

My old friend has been visiting his family in the UK the last few weeks and goes back next week.

He has expressed interest in getting a computer for general use (he'll game some but he doesn't need a gaming rig or laptop of any sort).

Due to the pandemic, his location and various other factors (like local work being seasonal), he has taken up living in a trailer / motorhome.

Initially he was quite interested in a pi 400, but given his circumstance, a laptop will probably do more for him - especially if it has a dvd drive.

So... given ive looked about a bit, and found myself locked out of some sites due to location / GDPR or plainly borked captcha sequences, I'd really love some help in finding something suitable.

I'll update with some preferences a bit later, but if people can help by getting the ball rolling with some non-dubious sites or advice (eg: whats it like ordering from the USA? - any additional taxes etc?), that would be great!
