Some less cheerful news/info -------------------------------------------------------------------

Some music/media that's not as upbeat, but fits the topic/theme ============================================================

timppu: So, before this thread gets locked down, any GOGgers diagnosed or highly suspected having gone through the corona infection already?
My entire family got sick the first week of January...

... started with a sore throat...

... then...

... low-grade temperature (101 degrees)...

... body and back aches...

... stuffy head...

... post-nasal drip...

... worsening cough...

... chest congestion...

... throwing up (in my case).

None of us went to the doctor, but at the time we all thought the illness was strange and not like any flu we had prior. Also, it lasted a very long time; I still had a cough one month later.

My brother on the other side of the country (NY) is currently having the same symptoms. Have also talked to many friends who had the same between January and February.

Completely anecdotal, but...

... it does seem likely this virus spread long before we were aware of the COVID-19 outbreak moving beyond China.

timppu: It is possible as you say, the virus was making rounds already before it became big news. Who knows, maybe it is currently at its second or third mutation round already?
The first documented case in China was in late Oct. 2019, so with air travel and the free movement of people, it's not hard to believe that it spread across many populations in the preceeding 2 - 3 months before international awareness grew. I feel pretty confident that if COVID-19 tests were ubiquitous prior to the declaration of a pandemic that we'd find the virus was moving through populations much earlier than we expected... Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb...

I'll say I was astounded to see that MANY, MANY of our friends had the exact same symptoms in January.

i had something in mid-late january. what felt like the deepest chest congestion in my life, general fatigue, and a nasty wheezy dry hack to go with it.

over the years i've gotten pretty good at mobilizng stuff that happens to be in my lungs, upward and out, no matter how congested. but that time was different. the effort required to force anything up was just too much. and if i was able to get anything up, it generally just looked like a bit of spit or clear muscus (sorry tmi). often when i would try to cough deeply it felt like my alveoli were simply flapping in the breeze. of over the course of 2-3 weeks the shortness of breath, cough, and mind fatigue subsided. i eventually was able to cough some stuff up, but not much, and i had a bit of a wheeze well into early march.

i never know though because i only go to the doctor when i've broken something or i think im dying.

Aren't cough and 38.3 degrees body temperature only symptoms of Corona? Speaking about your list.
Report from India concerning developments as of 2nd April

An Islamic organization was holding its international convention in Delhi on 23/24th March while nation wide lockdown was declared on 24th March. So many of the attendees who came from other Indian states and from around the world were housed in its own premises until they could leave, until 31st March when it came to public notice that there was such a large gathering of people still staying there and many had corona symptoms. Its been evacuated and the residents have been quarantined but many of the attendees already returned to their home states and currently state govts have been ordered to find them and test / quarantine them. Controversy as usual : https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/coronavirus-nizamuddin-centre-covid-19-cases-spark-a-controversy/article31219346.ece?

I went out to buy milk this morning and there were provisions / vegetable shops open which are necessary enough but many people were still out on the streets. You still have to look both ways before crossing the road due to vehicles on the road and many older men are idling around shops and bus stops without observing distancing or wearing masks. Seems the police force is too outstretched to cover my little area.

There have been reports of alcohol addicted men committing suicide due to withdrawal symptoms / inability to get a drink in my state. Only essential services operate during lockdown and alcohol shops aren't included, so they've been closed for 8 days now. State govt doesn't know how to deal with this(who would?) and has temporarily allowed doctors to prescribe alcohol and such prescriptions to be a valid form of acquiring booze from medical shops. Also deaths from people drinking hand sanitizer.

Seems hell is freezing over in diplomatic relations.

I have heard some good news similar to this topic.....the Muslim religious leaders have(afaik-iirc) locked down the holy cities(including mecca) and advised all muslims to not attempt their pilgrimage this year.

That sucks to hear.....over here it's nearly the complete opposite....everyone is mainly hiding in their homes for the most part(though we also have stretched nearly thin services like police and such atm).

Over here they allowed such to stay open(alcohol stores), but even without them people would still have grocery stores for weaker alcoholic beverages at least.

Also if I may ask, how does that doctor's note thing work? Do they then go and buy the alcohol from such stores or somewhere else once they have such notes?

If this keeps up I hope it lasts once this crisis is over.....environmental improvements here and there, some people helping others, some countries trying to be nice to others a bit more......I, for one, hope it becomes a permanent thing after all this.

Also thanks for this post/adding some new info from your part of the world.....stay safe and well. :)

Thanks for the article....that said, I think i'd rather trust the people of china who leak/post things on occasion a bit more than officials working for their leadership(whose job is part "damage control").

(To all: Of course, such numbers could likely be checked via various means....so I suggest anyone reading my posts or anything else here to check such yourself via other sources/means)

Nothing wrong with that :) but still scmp is more believable than a site that tries to estimate the number of deaths
on the number of urn's that relatives received.

Fair enough.....though I believe that site you linked said deaths from other causes was around 10k(In and/or around Wuhan)......while the number of urns being shipped out is supposedly much higher.

So(if the shipping numbers are accurate) either they have had many more deaths than they officially stated(due to Corona), OR they(funeral homes/etc) expect to need them in the future.

Either way, though, it doesn't sound too good(or as good as it could be).

That said, this disease is taking it's toll on the world & I hope for two things: That we can prevent as many deaths as possible, and that we can return to "normal life" as soon as possible.

This might be useful to some people.
In order to win this battle against COVID-19, we must work together and share our experience around the world. The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine has treated 104 patients tested positive for COVID-19 in 50 days; and it has achieved zero deaths in patients diagnosed, zero patients misdiagnosed, and zero infections in medical staff. Their experts wrote real treatment experience when combating the virus night and day, and quickly published this Handbook of COVID-19 Prevention and Treatment, in order to share their invaluable practical advice and references with medical professionals around the world. This handbook compares and analyzes the experience of other experts in China; gives detailed and comprehensive answers to potential questions for diagnosing and treating patients in different types; and provides a good reference to key departments such as hospital infection management, nursing, and outpatient clinics. This handbook provides comprehensive guidelines and best practices by China's top experts for coping with COVID-19.

227: There's a super long comment on that video from a self-described hospital worker about how the video is deceptive because some hospitals aren't allowing patients to be out of their rooms right now or visitors to hang around. Not that some random person's comment should be trusted any more than the video, but the allure of comfortable conspiracy theories can become dangerous when they're allowed to supplant facts at important moments.
The truth is we don't know how good or bad this situation. Many laws are being passed which put the public at risk if they were misused. It is also a money printing excuse. How can the ordinary person get accurate information on any disease outbreak or cancer clusters when they are hidden behind political medical groups.

funny, i had the same thing, This all started after visiting an aunt who was retained in a hospital for a weird virus ( she ended up with a hole in her lungs ) Not sure if there is any connection but for a couple of weeks i was very ill. The cold or flu stayed a long time too, i did not trow up but it was already weird to be ill in that matter. Prolonged period of illness too, after a month i also still had a cough, i did went on with working and such but there were few others who experienced the same symptons outside this one girl who fell ill about the same time as me.

maybe this was more of a weird flu then anything else.

you hear a lot of talk how animal markets and other 'stuff' connected to underdeveloped area's in the world are so dangerous but with the flu spreading across the world every time our body resistance is low i belief we are in that area also very vulnerable. i mean it is only one infection away from mutating into something really dangerous

francksteel: First, thanks for all your replies.

I don't understand : if there are "only" 500 000 infected in France, as we already have 15 000 deaths (maybe already 20 K, there seems to be many cases of deaths at home not already counted), that would mean a death rate of 15 000 / 500 000 = 3%, 10 times higher than 0.37%
Things like organization, preperation and age destribution regarding this pandemic is also something you have to put into consideration. Germany is an outlier because people prepared a whole month for this pandemic to happen (it also was the first country that embraced the whole "herd immunity" factor, though not lightly). Not only that but Germany basically "invented" european PCR testing as well and are the forerunners regarding any new scientific endeavor.

Personally I stick to the number of 500.000 people (or about 80-85% unnoticed) but the number can be in fact much higher and I can be wrong.

There is a model that considers that the numbers are in fact much higher than previously assumed.

Since this projection is almost two weeks old, it may mean that most population centres already archived herd immunity, Not only that but recent data gatherings suggest that about 85% of cases "slipped through" testing, because they were not considered testworthy subjects as they didn't showed any symptoms at all and they had to stay at home. You also can't just test millions of people at a daily basis.

In order to really understand the "true" number of infected people one country has to test the entirely of the population, which is impossible. And since those very "asymptomatic" (they're in reality just very mild cases) can still infect others, face masks should/must become mandantory. Because if you have this illness and you must sneeze, your droplets will be catched by the face mask instead of freely roaming around as a fine aerosol (even if you cough inside your elbow there will be a fine aerosol flying around). You don't even have to wear a proper one, I'd go so far and say that even holding a soft tissue before sneezing may work wonders.

There is a whole other problem that comes with this. Once this pandemic becomes endemic and people can start looking for ways to cure lung fibrosis, those who were trying to contain the virus like South Korea, China and Singapore are not immune to SARS-CoV-2, making direct contact with these people pretty much impossible. The western world basically became the equivalent of the mongolian horde. If we vaccinate people we must include the entirety of the human race or otherwise millions may becoming infected because of tourism, which is a nightmare for those asian countries.
