the_atm: And to top it all off, at the end of this school year the campus is closing for an online only approach to learning. I preferred this school over all the others because I made amazing friends in both students and teachers, I felt like I was actually part of a good community for the first time in my life and now... now it's just dissolving before me.
Shit. That sucks, man. And what an incredible series of events.

ddickinson: I'm sorry to hear about the library cutting your hours, I hope they will not be letting you go after the budget reorganizing. They would be stupid to lose such a wonderful person.
avatar
Getcomposted: Meh. :( Don't they realise that by cutting library workers, they're actually shooting themselves in the foot? Libraries exist to educate. How else are we supposed to better ourselves if we don't have access to the very thing that will collectively make a country better? A population that is well educated that (hopefully) knows how to think and judge for themselves, rather than swallowing all the pap that's fed to them.
Discernment begets honesty and elected politicians that are for the people. Everyone is better off except for corporations and their fat cats.
This.

HereForTheBeer: Probably a long shot, but have you looked into doing this type of work in the corporate world?

"Corporate Librarian? WTF is this dipshit on about?"

Well, they have mounds of info. Info that needs to kept track of. Much of it in paper format. I mean, just the small place I used to work at could have used someone with those skills to get the technical documentation in order, digitized it, made it easier to access, etc. And just because a business might have gone mostly paperless doesn't mean that the same concepts don't apply.

Might be worth a look.

Crewdroog: That's why you yelled at me for not getting books transferred to my rural library LOL. I am sorry they cut your hours, and that is a crap way to weed out people instead of doing their jobs and letting people go. Government. I hope that you are not one of those that goes, but if you are I am a firm believer in the crap saying "things happen for a reason" (yes, I'm one of those jerks). You are smart and capable. You will land on your feet. All else fails, you can use my "oh no I have no options" business plan. Move to Florida, sell sea shells by the shore. :)
Thanks for all the kind, supportive words! The somewhat bizarre thing is that this is one of the top library systems in the US, but the same problems DDickinson and GetComposted talked about are occurring here. We also recently had a reshuffling of people at the upper levels, and most of the newcomers are of the "internet is best" mindset...yet work in a library system with Master's (or better) in Library Science and Communications in Mass Media.
One thing contributing to this push for cutting hours of those without LS degrees is the fact that many of those with said degrees are underemployed and what they are trying to do is cater to those who do have them. On the one hand this is great for them; it's a shame when people with Master's Degrees cannot get good-paying jobs in a field they likely chose because they love. On the other hand, a lot of my colleagues and I are in similar straits, greatly enjoying the work but lacking the right degree.
I shudder to think of the world when everyone just gets their information from a few internet websites without doing proper research on their own. Wikipedia may be a fine resource for initial searches but if you don't follow that up and don't do some learning yourself then you're doing a disservice to yourself and everyone else.

As for being a corporate librarian, it's not that I would balk at this but rather that once again I lack the necessary degrees, as far as I know from looking into it before.

Yep, doing Research in a library pushed my final biology exam to a B- , a grade which is considered Witchcraft in our final
Exams.
There's a spider in my room. i moved my computer out of there until it starves. Spotted that little bastard today in the morning on the tshirt i was going to wear. i ended up wearing a different one.
I broke another fucking tooth. This is getting stupid, and this one really hurts.

Evil buggers. They've got too many eyes. Why did they evolve so many eyes? So that they can pounce on you better.
*shudder*

I love spiders. They prey on things I dislike. But I can appreciate that they're a little bit creepy.

And to add a little bitching: It irks me when guests in my home start smashing spiders like they're doing me some favor. They're my goddamn spiders, leave 'em alone. I should put up a sign or something.

Reason #1132 that I don't get many visitors, I guess.

Thank god this forum is anonymous. XD My dad recently had rotator cuff surgery but he's not really fond of the high end pain pills so he let me have a few.

Wow....the colors man....the colors!

I have the same respect for spiders as long as they stay out of my bedroom and bathroom. They also must stay clear of any doors or furniture which I may want to use. Once they get in those forbidden zones they are dead as soon as I stop shrieking like a ten year old girl, find a shoe, and smash him 30 times to make sure he is dead. Meanwhile, my cat is laughing at me from her perch.
I have a spider friend that lives in one of my car's door mirror. I don't bother him and he stays in the passenger mirror where he belongs and enjoys the rides I take him on.

So there's a silver lining (or in your case maybe a double rainbow) in every cloud:P

You smash them! ? Eeeewwwwww oh god no! I hate the way they die with their long thin legs

By the time I'm done smashing them they are unrecognizable as a spider.

ddickinson: Governments seem to be putting all their eggs in the internet basked. When the small library I used to work at closed, the reason given was that with the increase of internet users and more people using ebooks, that the use of libraries is becoming obsolete and with the recession, it was just not viable to keep open. This was despite the fact that the library had a very good footfall (it was a medium(ish) library that catered for all of the nearby villages and was always well used). Even school libraries are closing, with the schools relying on internet for the student to use as a research tool.

It seems somewhat narrow minded, as not everyone likes ebooks or using the internet for research and education. We used to get a lot of older people who came to borrow books and to socialise (which is viral for their health - isolation can destroy a person, especially an elderly person) and because they had no idea, or inclination, how to use a computer, they relied on the library as their source of education and readiing.
avatar
Getcomposted: One of the authors I read made a very good point. With ebooks, you need an initial outlay in order to get an ebook reader. You also need an internet connection to download the books.
Some people can't afford the electricity to charge the reader, let alone to buy it!
What this is doing in effect is limiting reading to the middle class and above. Anybody below the breadline need not apply. This is discrimination. Not the sign of a balanced society. :(
We also see an awful lot of traffic from the unemployed who use our computers to search and apply for jobs. They make and print out their CVs. In fact, the Job Centre tells them to come to us. They tell them to use the library resources to better themselves.
There's no risk of the library closing here, but our service has deteriorated massively. We couldn't handle the volume of traffic that came through sometimes, and now they've also cut more jobs.
4 people to handle a 3 storey library? The computer says "yes", reality says "no".
I'm curious, do you guys still have a human-run issues desk? because we sure as hell don't. If you want a book out, you've got to use one of the self-issue machines. This is fine for some, not so great for others.

As soon as i see a spider i'm paralyzed for a couple of seconds and run away as soon as i can move again.
