Matewis: Perhaps I phrased it a bit poorly. It's 6000MW that they simply don't have, and can't afford or don't have the diesel for the emergency generators to make up for it. The cause is mostly poorly maintained generators failing. Luckily back to stage 4 as of this morning.

GameRager: This is why I think we need to get more nations on thorium reactors......hardly any waste, no we*ponization issues, much safer, smaller reactor vessel, etc.
South Africa from what I understand was busy doing ground breaking research on pebble-bed nuclear reactors, which would've allowed for much smaller nuclear power stations. From what I hear it was very promising, that evidence even suggests the chinese broke into one of our facilities to steal the tech. However then if the rumours are to be believed the promising research was killed by the government. Which isn't surprising since not long after this the government came within a hair's breath of committing to a deal with the russians to build russian nuclear reactors in the country, a deal which two finance ministers flat out said the country could not afford. The former of which was fired for his trouble and replaced with a stooge that would've ok'd the deal, but was only the country's finance minister for one weekend before collective outrage forced the president to fire him too. His replacement was the second minister who said the deal was unaffordable and was also later fired and replaced with what suppose to be another stooge.
Luckily for us the presidency responsible for the mess was 'usurped' from within before the deal could've gone through and bankrupt us. Corruption is fun!

So spy games IRL, then?

Also are those designs as safe/compact/etc as thorium or less?

Sorry I don't know enough nuclear to say

morolf: Health system is likely to be over-burdened once the virus spreads, especially with hospital staff becoming infected themselves. And in any case, you don't want to end up in hospital, it's probably the most dangerous place during such an epidemic.
Hospitals are ALWAYS a bad place to be if a big enough spread of any major illness happens and overwhelms the system.

As for the current problems: I hear tell in China/other parts of asia that are the hardest hit they have been setting up centers with hundreds of cots for the infected, and entire buildings(small ones and few in number though) have been sealed up/emptied of bodies, as well as boies being burned to prevent the infection spreading.

(Plus entire large cities quarantined under armed guard)

morolf: I'm not even that worried for myself, but rather for my father who's in his 70s. But imo this thing could be extremely bad, I'm amazed that most people in western countries still don't seem to care that much.
Ever play Mass Effect 1-3? In it(especially game 3) people in "safer"/less hard hit areas of the galaxy acted like nothing was happening till it was too late....I worry(but just a bit) that some might be doing that here as well.

I've been sceptical of same of the more extreme rumours about the situation in China, but by any account it's clear that much of the country (maybe about half of the population) is under lockdown, with extreme quarantine measures being taken (still not clear if this has dropped the rate of infection low enough so that the virus won't spread anymore, it's apparently hyper-contagious, and can be spread by asymptomatic carriers).
The Italians are apparently now also intending to quarantine the three towns in Northern Italy where people have gotten ill.
imo it's clear that this thing is going to spread all over Europe in the coming weeks (or rather, it probably already has), really terrifies me. I don't get how so many people can be so complacent about it, the media in Germany at least still don't feature it prominently.

Went on a date with this girl on Friday. We wanted to smoke up and since I could not get any hashish, marijuana it was. She is remarkably beautiful, like a gothic fairy tale, and resembles the description of Carmilla from the novel. In a sense, we are mirror images and yet we are distinctly different I am 33 and she is 30. We both look remarkably young, due to our obsessive regimens, and have strong jawlines. Mine is of course stronger than hers.

I havd ADHD and so does she. It was our 4th date and a disaster. Smoking up Marijuana was a bad idea as she got high (she ingested the smoke completely) while I didn't. Hours were spent with me staring vaccously at empty space. While she kept rambling on, and marijuana amplified her social anxiety symptoms. We had to cut it short and she wanted to go to the nearby mall alone (because it is colourful). I was pissed so she paid the bill.

I was relieved when she texted me that she had gotten home safe. The irony is that sans the marijuana we connect remarkably well. She apologized profusely the next day.

What's twisted is that despite everything, I like this girl. She is as nuts as I am. So much for romance brewing in the midst of an apocalypse.

KiNgBrAdLeY7: Italy is invaded by Korona-virus. Tsk tsk. It escalated fast. I don't like the look of things, or even worse, where it's going.

Mostly not for me, but for others. A person i still really care about, usually and frequently travels there, together with a person i hate, but that's that.

I can rely on my tricks to stay safe myself, but this won't do...
I live in a country that neighbours China. A tad worried as it is a RNA based virus, which means it mutates rapidly, and developing a vaccine or cure is difficult.

Europe is better off as it is not as populated as my country. My country is extremely populated, and the city I live in is hot, humid, and has all the ingredients to make it a haven for the virus,

I wish you the best, buddy. That Korona thing, i don't like it the least bit. Hang in there. Stay safe!

I usually try to balance my take on such things somewhere between the worst and best reports(as usually the truth of such things lies somewhere in the middle), but when you see leaked clips of armed suit wearing people walking the streets in china and other leaked stuff it tends to worry the one who sees it if even just a bit.

The MSM/companies(and the powers that be) don't want people panicking in case either of two things happen: in case it turns out to be less a threat than people think(to keep people from worrying needlessly), OR in the likely case it spreads further(so people also don't panic and cause more problems).

Also companies want people to keep consuming so this doesn't impact their profit margins, most likely.

dtgreene: RIP Katherine Johnson, who died today.

For those who aren't aware, she was a computer (under the old definition of the term, before what we now call computers showed up) and scientist who helped get people into space and onto the moon. She also helped inspire confidence in the accuracy of digital computers for doing these sorts of calculations.

(For more details you can watch the movie Hidden Figures or read the book with that name.)
avatar
GameRager: I hope she rests in peace and her family/friends are able to move on.

(That said, from what i've heard she and others just double checked already checked data(as a sort of backup verification on data).

That is not to say she didn't provide a needed asset to the team or didn't help, as she did help and likely was a help to the effort back then, just that it might've overplayed her importance a bit)

BTW a question on the grammar of your post above: Did you mean she was a computer technician(as your post above says she was a computer[as in the machine] and scientist)?

Lionel212008: I have been wondering why the virus has not become a pandemic in tropical countries yet, Apparently, a hot and humid or a hot and dry climate deactivates it. This is unusual and interesting.
avatar
GameRager: Some claim the virus isn't impacted by such temperatures/climes, but then again that could be speculation....as for why it hasn't spread there: Well most smaller island nations are likely more likely to be able to isolate themselves and screen new arrivals easier, and nations farther from "ground zero" that aren't major travel hubs are likely not going to be hit as much as others.
There is at least 1 confirmed case in egypt. Africa is heavily dependent on China for imports and exports. What's worrying is that Africa received its testing kits only recently in Feb, and if the virus has already spread there then there is no way to be sure. I fear that we may already be too late to contain the virus.

If anything, we have a global recession on our hands.

Cue Bob Page laughing manically. o.0

(To all: The above is a Deus Ex reference, not meant to be seen as me joking about this)

But yeah, the situation at least warrants some caution, which is why I have been trying to keep up on it.

Just like in the game as well(iirc)....now if only we got some super cool body mods out of this(like in the games)....that'd be sweet.

New Coronavirus cases popping up in Germany every day, and the government seems to be incompetent as usual. One reads stories that are just grotesque, about Coronavirus tests taking 3-4 days, of hospitals refusing to do tests (on people who have just returned from northern Italy!), of there not being enough face masks and other protective gear for doctors and hospital staff...imo this will turn out to be disastrous. Creepy thought, but imo it might well be that at the end of this China's authoritarian system with its draconian measures will come out looking best.

DadJoke007: The economic chaos that could follow a complete shutdown nationally or globally might as well claim lives. I'm more concerned about the potentially devastating economical effects of covid-19 than the illness itself.
Eh, I worry about that somewhat...though I worry a bit more about how many will be around afterwards to have to deal with said financial impacts.
=============================================================

avatar
morolf: 3-4% isn't really low, if I understand correctly it's actually higher than the Spanish flu in 1918 (though that also killed lots of young people as well).
By low I meant lower than supposed rates(of around 15% or so) that some had touted online.

Of course, it DOES affect that many if one takes into account all those who get seriously ill/need hospital stays due to getting it(the worst cases that don't die but need intensive care/etc).

avatar
morolf: But yes, it's stunningly irresponsible. Germany has been getting increasingly dysfunctional imo for the last few years, this is a new low.
If that ultra PC crap kills off a bunch of people I hope the ones who pushed it(who are in positions of power to do so/in how they handled corona screening/prevention) all get canned/fired/etc.

avatar
morolf: Some economic impact is inevitable, but imo it will be much worse, if you just let it run wild and don't do anything to contain it, because it will overburden the health care system (one has to remember: there is no vaccine against it to protect health care personnel, so there's a significant risk of hospital staff getting sick as well). This will also mean lots of people will die of other diseases or at least not get proper treatment due to lack of resources, and it will also mean many people will miss work to keep themselves safe and not risk being dependent on a health care system that isn't working anymore.
This thing isn't the plague, but it's still extremely serious, unless one takes a proactive approach.
Agreed....they need to be proactive and make some major efforts to contain this, and not just let it run rampant/not give a damn.

My own addition to the thread: This bit bothered me especially:

"As things stand, Deere has the technical ability to remotely shut down a farmer’s machine anytime—if, say, the farmer missed a lease payment or tuned a tractor’s software to goose its horsepower, a common hack widely available through gray-market providers. A Deere spokesman says many manufacturers can remotely control vehicles they sell, but Deere has never activated this capability, except in construction equipment in China, where financing terms require it to."

So they can shut your stuff down if you miss a payment(making it harder to make said payments) and even remote start/run your equipment(though they claim they'd "never do such a thing")......very unsettling. :\

This is an example of why DRM is unethical. It's also an example of why not everything needs an internet connection.
