jcoa: The Steam version didn't get pulled. What a surprise.
Steam is not niche. It is many things, but not niche.

XYCat: Guys, seriously. News like this need to be on the main page. This is too fast for people who only sometimes read the forums. I found out about it this morning at work and wanted to buy some gift keys at least, but when I came home the game was already gone! >:(

paladin181: I refer you to my previous post:

paladin181: Because GOG doesn't want to advertise it. They just want a token notification that it is happening so they can point to it and say "see? We told you"

Virtue signaling at its finest. If they really wanted to let people know, mass mailers would go out. But no one wants to openly advertise bad news like that so they don't.

paladin181:
Honestly, I think this might be due to the notification time from the publisher. The publisher just announced on their Twitter on 2/27 that they were looking into different distribution and licensing deals. If that was all the notice GOG got, it didn't give them much time to turn things around.

Just trying to give the benefit of the doubt. But I do agree, it should be on the home page or something better than a random forum post.

tremere110: Would be interesting if this vanished from Steam too. I know there was a remaster done for mobile platforms - I wonder if they're bringing that here...
Smartphones have a lot to answer for the present problems in computing and the internet.

rtcvb32: Well watched a play-through of 7th guest. Half the puzzles wouldn't be as difficult to solve if they told you the rules rather than let you bumble through it.

And the story...makes no sense.

Course 11th hour is kinda worse. Seems like a B-rated 30-45 minute movie cut into small 15 second clips you get by solving clues in the mansion.

And the clues are stupid. You're given a hint like 'fruit loop on stove', and the computer hint breaks down loop could be taken as O and stove has another name, range. so O-range. So you have to find a picture with a orange in it....

Uggg... it's... stupid... Not only that the 'computer' can just solve any puzzles you don't feel like doing.
They were big FMV games back when PCs and FMV were special and they still have more gameplay than a lot of the walking simulators today.

Frustrating, I completely agree. Any notification at all is a plus in my book. I don't know of any other platform that announces games leaving the store in this manner. Pretty much the only reason I scan the forum these days.

There were a LOT of games that went the FMV route, where with the release of the CD your base game might be 60Mb, so what do you do with the other 500Mb?

Some games are only video with a few points where you have to interact. Others balanced it out.

But it's probably fairly easy to make an FMV game when your resolution is 320x240 so you don't have to be very precise because you can't see diddly squat in those.

Like running Wolfenstein 3D or Doom on a 33Mhz system on the tiniest window possible so you had a decent framerate...
Damn GOG, at the rate you keep losing old games Steam will end up with more old classics than you.

They don't seem to be concerned... Or at least, as much as they should. Maybe, old games are too niche, after all.

zlaywal: I honestly can't remember if I have actually play this game to its ending. Some of the puzzles are quite weird. But I do enjoy watching the making of video included as a a bonus here.
I (finally) finished it two years ago or so. I already tried it over a decade ago or more, but it was the microscope puzzle game that turned out to be too hard for me back then, the game that plays a bit like checkers, but in reverse.

Anyway, now I was somehow able to finally win that game. I don't recall if there were other equally hard puzzles, most were pretty easy and straightforward IIRC.

Then again, I don't quite consider the game a strong classic, it is merely a collection of unrelated puzzles with full motion videos in between with some strange over-acting. It is famous because it is one of the early "multimedia CD" games on PC, along with Myst.

I started 11th Hour as well, but got distracted and were even more annoyed by its cheesy TV shot acting and videos. Some games really wanted to be like movies, or at least TV-series' episode.
I actually bought 7th Guest on the last Winter Sale for $0.89. Nice timing in retrospective. The copy that I've played come from a non legal means way way back (sorry about that).

Now 11th Hour is one I haven't touch even though I also have it here. Maybe cause the reviews are not so great I'm not that excited to finally play and remove it from the backlog.

The Steam version is published by Nightdive, gog version is (was) apparently published by Trilobyte themselves.

I'd be surprised if this game doesn't show up again soon. Striking a new deal with Nightdive shouldn't be too hard for gog.

That's the weirdest thing, having the same game published by two companies on two different platforms, how can two companies hold the rights to the same game? copyrights is teh hard

Often it is because one company publishes the game before another company gains the publishing rights. The original contract with the first company remains in force until it expires in which case the second company can decide to continue publishing under a new contract.

A transfer in rights doesn't usually negate previous contracts - although it could depending on the wording of the original contract if it stipulates as such specifically.

My guess is that gog approached Trilobyte directly for the gog release. Getting it on Steam would probably have been harder, so Trilobyte went into a publishing deal with Nightdive, who already had their foot in the door, so to say.

I once again missed this kind of hidden announcement. And once again all the information from the game card is lost, even when you own the game.

Please GOG, KEEP THE GAME CARD OF REMOVED GAMES ACCESSIBLE FOR OWNERS OF THE GAME!

Sorry to say this, but they have passed GOG long time ago. There are quite a few classic titles there that have never been on GOG.

My favourite example of this is Tony Tough.

It is on Steam, it is on Fireflower, it used to be on DotEmu (where I got it from), but it has never been on GOG.

Makes you wonder why, doesn't it?
